Chapter 96: Fu Chengjing
When Ruan Li slowly opened her eyes, she finally understood Shi Xun’s previous experience the hospital room was packed with people. The first person she saw was Fu Huaizhou, sitting by her bedside, tightly holding her hand.
Seeing her awake, Fu Huaizhou was about to say something, but Ruan Li immediately interrupted, her face full of curiosity as she held onto his hand.
“Where’s the baby?”
She hadn’t seen him yet, as she’d fainted from exhaustion earlier.
Fu Huaizhou’s intended words got stuck in his throat. The baby had already managed to challenge his status at home. The child, swaddled and carried over by a nurse, was eagerly received by Ruan Li.
“Oh, it’s a boy,” Ruan Li said, gently touching the baby’s face. The newborn didn’t look particularly appealing still a bit wrinkly and was staring back at her with curious eyes.
Ruan Li glanced at Fu Huaizhou and Shi Xun, who were in the room, and her face lit up with amusement. These two had been insisting that it would be a little girl, raising their hopes high, only to be surprised now.
Fu Huaizhou had already known in the operating room and had accepted it. He looked down at the tiny person blinking at everyone around.
“I love them both,” he said warmly, placing his hand gently on Ruan Li’s head as if she were the child. “You did well, Lychee.”
A natural delivery meant faster recovery compared to a C-section. Ruan Li, not fond of hospitals, preferred to return home, and since Fu Huaizhou had already arranged for medical staff to be available at the Imperial Garden, both families soon left the hospital.
However, the public’s attention was sharp. No sooner had Ruan Li stepped back into the Imperial Garden than news about her hit the top of the social media trends.
“Why were there so many luxury cars outside Jingyi Hospital the other day? Was it some kind of inspection?”
“I work at Jingyi Hospital. An entire floor was sealed off today. We weren’t allowed anywhere near it.”
Luxury cars and an entire floor reserved yet there were no significant conferences or inspections scheduled in Beijing. It didn’t take long for people to guess.
“I can only think of one person… someone who could make Beijing move like that.”
“Great minds think alike. I’m guessing Ruan Li just gave birth. Let’s wait for her to post on social media.”
Both families held grand ceremonies for the baby’s third-day and one-month celebrations. The child wasn’t just special due to Fu Huaizhou’s influence but also because of the backing of the Shi family. Even though Ruan Li’s recognition banquet had been delayed due to her pregnancy, it was already well-known in Beijing that she was the youngest daughter of the Shi family, making this alliance something no one had anticipated.
At the one-month celebration, Fu Chengjing had started to look more like his parents, the wrinkles smoothing out to reveal features that hinted he’d grow up to be quite handsome.
Ruan Li never disclosed Fu Chengjing’s gender to the public, not for any particular reason she was just too busy enjoying the adorable little bundle.
Fu Chengjing was a low-maintenance baby for everyone except his mother. He was generally calm, but when it came to Ruan Li, even turning over required her full attention.
It wasn’t until Fu Chengjing’s first birthday that Ruan Li began to gradually return to work. During interviews, questions about her family were inevitable, and the public finally learned more about the mysterious young prince.
At Fu Chengjing’s one-year-old “grabbing ceremony”:
“Fu Chengjing,” Fu Huaizhou called softly, the name he personally chose. Ruan Li, not being great with names, liked it the moment she heard it, so they settled on it.
“Cheng” means “responsibility”; “Jing” refers to the luster of jade. These were Fu Huaizhou’s earnest hopes and admiration wrapped in a name.
The baby was placed in the center, surrounded by a variety of objects jade, inkstones, an abacus, even a bow and arrow everything imaginable was included. The old master had even placed his lifelong personal seal among the items.
Little Jing sat quietly in the center, occasionally glancing up at the adults around him, showing no interest in grabbing anything. Shi Xun, looking to stir things up, placed a piece of candy in front of him.
“Why isn’t he picking anything?” Shi Xun asked quietly.
Fu Huaizhou waited calmly. The chubby toddler remained still, his large eyes occasionally flicking over the items but not making a move.
“Maybe nothing interests him?” Just as Shi Xun considered adding something more, Ruan Li came downstairs. She had fully regained her figure but looked more mature and alluring than before, like a ripe peach.
Fu Huaizhou’s gaze locked onto her, draped in a soft yellow cheongsam, her movements graceful, and his eyes darkened as he instinctively moved to stand protectively in front of her.
“He still hasn’t grabbed anything?” Ruan Li asked, surprised.
Fu Huaizhou’s gaze remained on her, and he slowly shook his head.
“What do you like, Little Jing?” Ruan Li asked gently.
Hearing her voice, the child finally reacted, stretching out his chubby arms towards her. Since it was all just for show, no one minded if he didn’t grab anything. Ruan Li simply picked him up, and he clung tightly to her shoulder, not wanting to move.
Fu Huaizhou observed the baby’s firm grip on Ruan Li’s clothing and commented, “He chose you?”
Ruan Li, slow to catch on, was a bit surprised.
“He doesn’t like anything else. He only likes you,” Fu Huaizhou explained. It was unexpected even for him. The child had a strong possessive streak, refusing to let go of Ruan Li’s dress.
Sensing his father’s discontent, little Chengjing lifted his hand and grabbed at the air, then yanked the silver tie clip off Fu Huaizhou’s tie. Holding it tightly, he burrowed back into his mother’s embrace.
“I’ve never seen a child pick their parents during a grabbing ceremony,” someone joked, and the atmosphere was warm and cheerful.
With Fu Huaizhou, the old lady, and the Shi family involved, Ruan Li didn’t need to worry about raising Fu Chen jing and was able to focus on her acting career.
Chen Jing had too many scripts to choose from. “Do you want to try a family reality show?”
Ruan Li had seen those shows before. “I’ll ask Little Jing.”
“He’s only a year old. Can he understand?” ChengJing was skeptical, though she had often seen the clever little one.
Ruan Li nodded seriously. “Babies are very perceptive. He really can understand.”
Back home at the Imperial Garden that night, Ruan Li saw Little Jing wobbling as he practiced walking on the carpet. Fu Huaizhou sat on the sofa, watching as the baby occasionally tugged at his pant leg.
Hearing her arrival, the child wobbled towards her. Watching the baby’s hurried steps, Fu Huaizhou commented dryly, “That’s my wife, Fu Chengjing.”
