Chapter 105: Becoming a Capitalist in Another World
Reiner hid with Junice and Elyanna in the bushes, and before his butt had even warmed the ground, Martina returned with Nora, covered in blood.
The corners of her mouth kept rising.
It was obvious she was quite pleased with her own strength.
Reiner looked at Nora and asked, “Is it done? We didn’t kill the wrong target, did we? All the marks match up?”
“Relax, Master, they all match.”
“No one else noticed, right?”
“Right, I was keeping watch while Martina struck, only 6 guards were present and no one else followed,” Nora paused for a few seconds before adding, “As you asked, Master, their bodies will never be found.”
Fiona had specifically told them to make the targets disappear without a sound.
“Where did you stash them?”
“We dug a pit and buried them on the spot; Martina dug fast and deep, so we’re finished,” Nora said with a light nod.
Martina’s greatsword was smeared with dirt.
Reiner guessed she had simply used the sword as a shovel.
“So, how is the new spell, useful?”
Martina just smiled and cockily raised one finger.
Before Reiner could ask what she meant, her inner voice reached him.
(I took out 7 orcs in a single instant.)
Reiner was not surprised.
After all, during yesterday’s sparring she had already shown speed at that level.
“Martina, Nora, you two were amazing,” Reiner praised.
The two beast-eared girls showed little on their faces, yet they were secretly delighted.
He rinsed the blood off Martina with a stream of water and then used fire to warm her.
Seeing the unending smile on her lips, Reiner, despite having eavesdropped on her thoughts, still asked, “What are you laughing at?”
Martina beamed and said, “I’m so strong and darling is so skilled with magic; our children will be ridiculously powerful.”
Nora stayed silent, but her inner voice murmured, (Mine won’t be bad either; the child will definitely be very bright.)
A cold wind blew and Reiner shivered; he rubbed the two girls’ ears and no longer wanted to stay in this ice-covered wilderness for another second.
The job was done, and the next step was to come back outside the city in 2 days to wait for Fiona to deliver the gold coins.
“Let’s go, we’ll buy something to eat at the tavern; we’re almost out of white bread and meat at home, and a few days ago I saw beef and mutton for sale, so let’s change the menu today.”
Elyanna chimed in, “Reiner, Reiner! We’re also out of honey at home, buy some honey.”
Reiner froze for a moment; he had been speaking in the demi-human tongue with Nora and Martina, yet she had understood.
“You can understand the demi-human tongue?”
Elyanna nodded, “Living together for a long time lets you pick it up; you often say white bread and jam at the table, so over time I figured out some words.”
“Then you just mentioned white bread and chicken; I saw the white bread in the kitchen running low today, so I could guess what you meant.”
This spirit looked as plain as a potato, but there was no doubt she was quite clever.
As winter set in, the bees had almost stopped producing honey, causing the price of honey at the apothecary to soar.
But since Elyanna counted as half a mentor, he still had to buy it.
“Got it.” Reiner patted her head.
They reached the tavern; Junice took Nora and the others to shop while Reiner walked to the bulletin board in the corner.
The number of posted requests had grown; stacks of yellow sheets covered the board.
Reiner flipped through several pages in a row and found that many of the requests had already expired.
When he first arrived in Cannon, Reiner thought the lack of adventurers taking jobs was due to the season.
Only after further inquiries did he learn that the sheer number of quests was because local adventurers were scarce, so demand always exceeded supply.
If Reiner had arrived in Cannon right after crossing over, he could probably have saved quite a bit of money through quests.
While he was leafing through the notices, a bald uncle at his side handed him a commission sheet.
“What’s this?”
Reiner looked at the reward first; it had risen from 5 silver coins to 1 gold coin, yet no one was willing to take it.
“The clients are a group of market traders; they’re headed to Melod in Dyast and have been waiting here for about a week. If no adventurer accepts soon, they’ll petition the lord for help.”
“Melod, huh… I’ve taken that road myself, and it is dangerous; you have to cross complicated forests and sometimes highwaymen show up,” Reiner said as he took the sheet and shook it lightly, “So no one wants it because the difficulty’s too high?”
“That plays a part, but the main reason is we simply don’t have many adventurers here; counting them all, we have maybe a dozen. I’ve been to Dyast, and they have a lot more than we do.”
Reiner scratched his chin and fell into thought.
Suddenly he thought of a way to make money.
Capitalist mode: activate!
Reiner had barely spent any money lately.
He still had 55 Barnite gold coins on hand.
Once Fiona delivered the payment, he’d have another large sum.
If he used the money to buy slaves, gave them a short period of training, and then let them take on quests…
He wanted to invest a bit as a trial run.
“I’ll take this job,” Reiner said, rolling the notice up and tucking it into his coat.
The bald uncle nodded. “That’s good news.”
Junice had finished buying food and was walking over. “Still looking at quests?”
Reiner leaned in and whispered mysteriously in her ear, “I’ve found a business opportunity!”
“A business opportunity? You’re going to start making money?”
Reiner nodded. “Of course, who would complain about having too much money in their pocket?”
Seeing the two beast-eared girls horsing around nearby, Reiner told them, “Let’s swing by the slave market here in a bit.”
Nora and Martina answered in unison, “Okay!”
Ever since Daisy had been bought, they understood that as long as Reiner purchased someone, that person’s future would change dramatically.
If nothing else, they would at least never starve again.
In a world that was cruel to demi-humans, that was a rare blessing.
Reiner put on a serious face and said solemnly, “I hope you understand this: I’ll only buy slaves with decent talent, not just anyone.”
“I won’t invest too much emotion in them, and I won’t treat them the same way I treat you.”
The two beast-eared girls froze for a moment.
Nora asked, “Then will they get enough to eat?”
“Food, clothing, and a place to sleep are basic needs; I’ll make sure they’re met.”
Nora and Martina exchanged smiles and said together, “That’s already great, thank you, Master…”
