Chapter 110: The White-Furred Fox
The next morning.
Reiner ate a little white bread, then headed out with the group.
The snow piled on the streets had begun to melt, and winter was about to end.
He first went to a tavern to find a money changer, then exchanged ncounty 50 Barnite gold coins for Dyast gold coins.
Barnite gold coins were indeed worth more than Dyast gold coins.
The exchange rate hovered around 1 to 2.5.
Yet the changer took a hefty cut, and only 120 Dyast gold coins reached Reiner’s hands.
Reiner tossed the heavy purse a couple of times and handed it to Nora for safekeeping.
With money in hand, they went straight to the slave market.
Junice stayed close to Reiner and gave a small sneeze.
“If you’re cold, add another layer so you don’t get sick.”
“Got it.” Junice had wanted to take Reiner’s hand, but when she noticed Martina watching, she immediately dropped the idea.
Although the two of them had just defined their relationship, she still felt guilty, as if she were doing something wrong.
She used to chat openly with Reiner, but now she was even embarrassed to speak.
Seeing this, Reiner proactively took Junice’s hand.
Martina made a strange noise on purpose, mocking the pair.
With that annoying attitude, he would have to rein her in tonight.
When they arrived at the slave market, the melting snow had drawn more customers, and many noble servants and adventurers were picking out slaves.
Martina and Nora stood by in silence; they disliked this place.
Martina in particular had strong empathy, and seeing her own kind suffer made her heart ache even if she said nothing.
Next time they came, Reiner would leave the two of them at home so they would not have to watch their kin being sold.
What else could he do with his wives? Spoil them, of course.
“I’m going to start selecting; why don’t you three find a place to rest?” Reiner raised an eyebrow.
Junice understood, grabbed the other two by the hand, and led them toward the exit. “We’ll wait at the gate.”
Elyanna glanced back at Junice, then ran decisively to Reiner.
She tugged on Reiner’s sleeve. “Why did you split up?”
“No need for them to come in; they wouldn’t choose anyway.” Reiner shrugged carelessly.
“All right, then I’ll go in with you.” Elyanna stayed glued to him.
Reiner currently had two criteria for buying slaves.
First, talent had to be at least Rare, and any slave with a special skill could be bought as an exception.
Keen senses, for instance, or a high Spirit stat.
Intelligence could be a bit lower; sometimes someone too smart was not a good thing.
Second, he preferred female demi-humans whenever possible.
After all, the system’s achievement bonus let him easily gain favor with beast-eared girls.
Besides, the gender difference among beast-eared girls did not look all that pronounced.
Reiner strolled around the cheapest slave line, using Appraisal on each one to see if any gems had slipped through.
After ten-odd minutes of searching, he really did find a Rare-talent stray.
Her name was Roxanne, a snake-type demi-human. She was thin and frail, showing slight malnutrition.
“Hiss!”
She noticed Reiner and flicked out a long, forked tongue.
Her four limbs were covered in brown snake scales, which looked rather eerie.
Judging by her talent stats, her Perception reached grade A and Agility grade B. She was similar to Nora, suitable as a scouting pathfinder.
With those cold vertical pupils, she studied Reiner carefully.
Then a mind-voice drifted over. (This man’s scent is quite pleasant.)
???
Reiner realized the achievement system might have kicked in.
He bought Roxanne without hesitation and passed the money to the slaver.
“No need for a pact mark.”
With that, he cast domination magic on Roxanne on the spot.
“Follow behind me and don’t try to run; I’ve already used domination magic on you.”
Roxanne nodded, and another mind-voice wafted over. (He actually understands our language.)
Reiner glanced back at her, deciding to deal with her after finishing his purchases.
Elyanna poked Reiner’s waist with her staff and laughed. “So you’ve already used the spell I taught you the other day?”
“Otherwise, what did I learn it for? Putting on a pact mark costs money; skipping it saves me some.” Reiner shrugged.
After checking out the low-grade slaves, Reiner went to look over the mid-grade lines.
As the prices rose, the slave varieties improved as well.
After a few rounds he spotted five Rare-grade female demi-human slaves.
Reiner spent 20 gold coins and bought all of them.
Seeing a big customer, the slavers crowded around to push their stock.
“My lord, this girl is great! She’s pretty and still a virgin!”
“This one’s built like an ox! Eats little, strength for days, only 4 gold coins!”
“My lord! My lord!”
Reiner nodded perfunctorily.
He used Appraisal on every slave the sellers promoted.
On the surface they looked fine, yet Appraisal revealed a pile of hidden ailments.
Either they carried contagious diseases or they were lame.
What a bunch of crooks.
Although there seemed to be plenty of customers, most were probably just browsing and would not buy, which was why the sellers resorted to such desperate tactics.
Wandering farther, Reiner came to a group of high-grade slaves.
This group had more women than men, all of them attractive with good Spirit states; clcounty they were well-raised and trained, each priced at over 10 gold coins.
The slavers hung boards on their chests listing their particular skills and strengths.
Quite a few in the group were demi-humans who even understood Dyast.
[Appraisal complete: 34 slaves in total… 2 Inferior, 9 Common, 19 Rare, 3 Epic, 1 Legendary.]
Reiner blinked, then quickly counted the coins in his pouch.
He still had a bit over 90 gold coins left.
He could afford to take the Epic-grade and the Legendary-grade ones.
As for the Rare ones, forget it; 10 gold coins apiece were not worth it right now.
Reiner picked out the four demi-humans.
Luck was with him; all four were female.
Three were Epic-grade demi-humans: a cow type, a wolf type, and a fish type.
Their attributes each had their own highlights.
The bull type was immensely strong, with S-grade Strength.
The wolf type excelled in balance, boasting A-grade Strength, Agility, and Endurance.
The fish-type girl with gills on either side of her neck had ordinary Strength and Endurance, but both Perception and Spirit reached grade A.
She should be able to use water magic.
Reiner finally stopped before the Legendary-grade demi-human slave and examined her carefully. This one was a white-furred fox.
Her smile looked utterly enchanting…
