Chapter 113: Dimas’s Commission

After buying clothes and quilts at the market, the demi-human slaves clutched their new belongings tightly.

That gesture made them sense that, just as Martina claimed, Reiner might not be so bad after all.

After buying the clothes, Reiner took them to look for a rental house.

With the number of beast-eared girls under him growing, the party now totaled 16 people, and that tiny cottage could hold at most 6; it just was not practical, and he could not let 10 beast-eared girls all sleep on the living-room floor.

“Vacant houses near the east side of town? As far as I know there aren’t any, but there are plenty over on the west side… want to think about that?” the tavern owner asked while wiping the wooden table in front of him with a rag.

“That won’t do then.” The west side was far from where he lived and therefore out of the question.

On second thought, he still did not know how long he would stay in Melod.

He might have to return to Cannon after a while.

Although that place was relatively undeveloped, it might offer more opportunities than Melod and was a promising spot for growth.

Reiner sighed and then began to think carefully.

His own house sat in the eastern corner of town, and buildings there were sparse; between his backyard and the outer wall lay a weedy vacant lot almost 10 meters square.

If he wished, he could raise an employee dormitory for them there in minutes with earth magic.

However, almost every inch of land inside the city belonged to the lord, and the rulers cared greatly about ownership; building without permission could easily be seen as a provocation.

He would have to ask Dimas about it.

“Junice, take her home first, I need to see Dimas.”

“Then come back county.”

Nora and Martina also wanted to go with Reiner.

“I’m giving you a task: watch these slaves for me, especially that white fox… keep a close eye on her.”

Nora nodded, obediently returned to Junice’s side, and stared hard at Peggy.

Thus the cat and the fox stared each other down.

Martina pouted, puffing up her cheeks as she said, “You’re so eager to send us away… are you planning to look for another woman?”

Reiner yanked Elyanna over and said, “If I were really going woman-hunting, I wouldn’t drag this third wheel along, would I?”

The little elf did not understand their exchange and scratched her head in confusion.

Martina narrowed her eyes, thought for a moment, and then nodded. “I’ll trust you… for now. Come back county so I don’t have to miss you.”

Reiner parted from them and walked straight out of the tavern.

About 10 minutes later, Reiner reached the city gate.

From a distance he already saw Dimas.

The man stood on the wall in full plate armor, gazing into the distance.

Judging by his back, he seemed to have grown sturdier in the month since they had last met.

“Lord Dimas!”

Hearing Reiner’s voice, he turned around.

Their eyes met.

Reiner had meant to exchange greetings, but the usually taciturn Dimas spoke first. “Reiner, I heard you were back; I was just about to look for you.”

There was a faint note of joy in his voice.

Dimas noticed the blue-haired “potato” beside him and asked, “And who is this?”

Reiner replied, “North of Dawn Forest there is a nameless great forest; she is an elf who lives there.”

“An elf?” Dimas walked down the stone steps of the wall, studied Elyanna closely, and said, “It’s the first time I’ve seen one with my own eyes; aside from the hair color she looks no different from a human.”

“There really isn’t much difference.”

Elyanna, like a shy little girl, grabbed Reiner’s clothes and hid behind him.

That confirmed it; she was a socially anxious little lass.

Dimas then asked, “So you’ve been staying in that forest all this time?”

“No, I’ve been in Cannon of Barnite; you reach it by passing through that nameless forest.”

“Cannon, huh… that’s not close to here.”

Reiner nodded; it was more than 300 kilometers away, and with the rough forest paths the trip alone took over 10 days.

Elyanna linked her arm through Reiner’s and swayed gently, clcounty feeling shy.

She was obviously a socially anxious elf, yet she loved traveling and adventuring all over…

Reiner spoke softly. “Let’s get down to business… you said you were looking for me; what’s up?”

Dimas straightened, his tone turning solemn. “Some slave traders claim a red dragon has appeared near Dawn Forest, and several hunters have already gone missing there; I’d like you to investigate whether it’s true. If we do find signs of a dragon, I’ll immediately assemble the army to subjugate it, and I may need your help then.”

A red dragon?

Reiner instinctively looked at the Breath of the Red Dragon in his hand.

Those two might even be related.

“If I get the chance, I might be able to take it out for you myself.”

No sooner had he spoken than the system’s voice rang in his ears.

Reward: Five vials of holy water capable of healing injuries.]

Work just landed on his plate.

Map-running quests were dull and tedious, but the prize of five all-purpose holy waters made Reiner grin from ear to ear.

His Heal Water could treat large-area wounds, while Elyanna’s light magic could precisely mend small injuries.

Although both healing arts were excellent, their potency was still limited and utterly helpless against more grievous wounds.

Having holy water as a safety net was best; he might need it unexpectedly someday.

While he was daydreaming, Elyanna tapped his side with her staff. “Reiner, what are you grinning about? He’s talking to you, hey, hey!”

Reiner jerked his head up to find Dimas staring at him in bewilderment.

Awkward.

“Sorry, I was thinking about something else and zoned out a little… what did you say?”

Dimas shook his head and repeated, “Dragons are not ordinary monsters; every single one is extremely troublesome. Your strength is good, but I don’t want you to take this risk.”

“If it’s really that dangerous, I’ll run.”

Dimas nodded, then seemed to remember something and asked, “You must have come to me for a reason too, right?”

“There’s a weedy vacant lot in my backyard… can I rent that land? I just bought a lot of demi-humans at the slave market and need to build them a place to live.”

“How big is that lot?” Dimas asked in confusion.

Reiner thought for a moment; at 10 meters by 10 meters it was roughly 1,000 square feet.

“Less than 1,000 square feet.”

Dimas shrugged, unconcerned. “Use it. If any soldiers ask, just say I approved it.”

As expected, going straight to Dimas saved him 20 years of detours.

Reiner nodded, said his goodbyes to Dimas, and then headed directly home.
