Chapter 121: Loyal Peggy
“Me? I’m just a commoner who has trained for 2 ½ years.” Reiner shook his head and laid his face back on the table.
When Peggy actually switched to the honorific “您,” the corners of his mouth involuntarily curved upward.
Peggy went on expressionlessly: “You used a total of 4 elemental magics… fire, wind, water, and earth… as well as several spells I do not recognize, and I have never heard of anyone able to wield so many kinds of magic.”
“Moreover, I watched closely while you cast, and you almost never chanted; you merely lifted your staff and a variety of spells came flying out.”
“Also, your mana never seems to run dry; if I cast fire magic on that scale a few times I would be drained.”
“When you realized fire magic was ineffective against that dragon, you instantly switched to other elements and kept up a high-intensity assault.”
“In addition, I discovered you understand at least 4 languages, and your age even looks younger than mine.”
“Your medicine was also miraculous; I felt I was dying at the time, yet after you fed me a single dose I quickly regained my strength.”
Peggy rattled all this off in one breath, and Reiner had to admit her observations were meticulous.
Reiner, sounding drowsy, said, “Correction, I’m actually 2 years older than you.”
“I never told you my age, so how did you know it?” Peggy shook her head and went on, “Forget it, there are so many bizarre things that it hardly feels strange anymore.”
“Stop calling me ‘sir’ over and over; I’m not used to it, just call me Reiner.”
“I will keep that in mind.” Peggy nodded.
Watching her act so respectfully, Reiner could barely keep from laughing.
Obviously only a single day had passed, yet she was a completely different person from before.
“I still prefer you when you’re wild and rebellious.”
Peggy slowly rose, walked up to Reiner, and asked in puzzlement, “I simply can’t understand why you chose to save me and my sister.”
Reiner was an honest man, so he answered without disguise, “I saved you because you can help me make money, and it would have been a waste to let Martina squash you to death.”
“As for your sister, that was merely to give me better leverage over you.”
“Those 2 potions must be worth far more than the two of us; you’re smarter than I am, so you shouldn’t be doing a losing deal.”
Reiner did not think he was smarter than Peggy; he was simply overpowering her by eavesdropping on her thoughts.
He admitted, “Strictly speaking, you’re right, but let’s just say I couldn’t bear to watch you two die, and besides, you’re rather pretty; I like fluffy little animals like you.”
When he was a child he had wanted to raise cats, dogs, and foxes.
Although he never got real animals, beast-eared girls could just barely count as a substitute.
Reiner felt quite pleased and nodded contentedly.
Peggy suddenly asked from the side, “You want to sleep with me?”
Reiner was briefly speechless: “Do you have cotton in your ears? I said I like small animals; don’t twist my words.”
Peggy frowned slightly: “True, with your abilities you could never be short of women; I was foolish.”
Reiner lay on the table and squinted at her.
After pausing a few seconds, Peggy continued, “I admit I dislike and even hate humans, but it is undeniable that you saved my sister, so from today forward you are my benefactor.”
Reiner instantly raised his hand: “Then can you call me ‘benefactor’?” (恩公 ~ legit it just means benefactor)
“‘Be-benefactor?'” Peggy looked complicated and asked in confusion, “Does that word have some special meaning?”
Reiner nodded: “In some tales from my homeland, foxes who are rescued call their savior ‘benefactor’, and I happen to like the sound of it.”
“How do they usually repay that favor?”
“All sorts of ways, but the most common one is, ahem!”
Peggy lowered her head a little and whispered, “I understand; if the chance arises…”
Reiner shook his head: “Let’s drop this topic; I’m satisfied with how things are and don’t need you doing anything rash.”
Peggy said nothing and simply stood quietly in front of Reiner.
Having eavesdropped on her thoughts, Reiner knew what she was about to say, so he told her, “Just say it; if it’s reasonable I’ll agree.”
Peggy suddenly switched to Dyast and, her voice trembling, said, “Benefactor, could you please not place a pact mark on my sister? She is precious to me, and I swear I will never use that to harm you.”
Reiner glanced at Neve, who was curled up in the corner.
The little girl was not talkative and rarely thought of much, so he could only catch her inner voice occasionally.
Reiner asked tactfully, “Is she a little slow?”
“Mm-hmm.”
“Was it caused by humans?”
“No, she caught a plague when she was little, and although she survived she has been like this ever since; she can still take care of herself, she just gets confused sometimes.”
Her intelligence was rated E, a whole tier dumber than Martina.
Reiner went on, “Are you going to look after her for the rest of your life?”
Peggy nodded: “Yes, she is my only family in this world, and I would give everything for her.”
With that, she walked over to Neve, lightly tapped her forehead, and scolded, “Dummy, if you see monsters in the sky you have to run somewhere else; what if you get eaten?”
Neve blinked and answered, “If I leave, Sis won’t be able to find me.”
Reiner shrugged: “Then I won’t mark her, but I warn you, don’t exploit my kindness for any crooked scheme.”
Peggy replied firmly, “Absolutely not; if you ever find me doing that, please kill me on the spot.”
Reiner made an OK gesture.
“Since you’ve said everything, let me rest for a bit; I’m tired today.” Reiner yawned and lay on the table to nap.
At dinner time Junice woke him up.
Reiner was still draped in a wool coat.
“Reiner, why didn’t you go back to your room to sleep?” Junice asked curiously.
“I just napped a bit before dinner, and I was too lazy to walk back and forth.”
He looked at Peggy sitting in the corner; the girl was resting while hugging her little sister.
Daisy set the warmed white bread on the table, then handed the black bread smeared with fish paste to Peggy and Neve.
The two of them held the large chunks of bread and gnawed away.
“Sis, this stuff tastes better than berries,” Neve said, blinking her big eyes; she looked rather cute.
Reiner took a piece of white bread, spread some honey on it, and handed it to Neve: “Kids should eat this.”
Neve stared at Reiner warily and did not dare take the white bread right away.
Peggy whispered, “Neve, he is one of the few good people in this world; take the bread, and if I am ever gone, treat him as your brother.”
Neve blinked and tentatively called, “Big brother?”
