Chapter 60: Nora Awakens
“How is she?” Martina leaned on a crutch at the bedside and asked as she looked at the still-sleeping Nora.
Since she too was a demi-human, she felt a bit concerned.
(Poor Nora, thank goodness nothing worse happened.)
“I don’t know. She’s only unconscious, her life isn’t in danger, she drinks when I give her water and can eat food.” Reiner reached out and stroked Nora’s cat ears.
Tears welled in Daisy’s eyes; she dipped a towel into the wooden basin and gently wiped the dirt from Nora’s face, softly calling her name from time to time.
It was already night, and Reiner had brought them home.
At first Daisy saw Nora in Reiner’s arms and thought she was simply asleep.
Only after Reiner explained the situation did she break down and cry.
“How could this happen…”
Although Reiner was worried himself, he still comforted Daisy. “She’s only unconscious, we can save her, so don’t worry too much.”
“Mm…”
Reiner let out a long sigh.
A dull headache throbbed behind his eyes, and all he wanted now was a good rest.
“Go back to your rooms, I’ll take care of her tonight.”
“Then I’ll come again in the morning,” Daisy whispered.
Reiner nodded.
Daisy and Martina left one after the other.
Reiner undressed to go to bed, but just as he lay down the door opened again.
Thinking Breath of the Red Dragon had come to make trouble, Reiner shooed it away. “Go, go, I’m exhausted today, don’t mess with me.”
“Reiner…”
It was Martina.
She limped into the room, her eyes darting everywhere, looking very uneasy. “Uh, thanks for saving me today.”
“Rest well; Dimas might send us back to the ruins in a few days.”
“Oh.” Martina stood in the doorway, neither speaking nor leaving, staring straight at Reiner.
Soon her unspoken thoughts drifted over. (Aren’t you going to touch my ears?)
To be honest, ever since he learned that Nora was unconscious he had had no desire to play with ears.
Yet seeing Martina’s flushed cheeks, he still held out his hand and gave her an out. “Since I hauled you out, shouldn’t I get to touch your ears?”
Martina gave a soft hum, sat on the edge of the bed and lowered her head. “You really leave me no choice… go ahead.”
Reiner pinched her warm, springy horse ears.
Honestly, they were not as fun as Nora’s.
“All done, go get some rest.”
Martina looked up, lightly bit her lower lip, and seemed a little dissatisfied.
(He was so happy touching Nora’s ears, but not with mine; the gap is huge. Maybe he’s upset because Nora is hurt. I hope she gets better soon.)
Still, she did not linger; once her ears had been petted she left the room.
Reiner blew out the candle, pulled up the quilt, and hugged Nora tightly.
He slept fitfully that night.
Every so often he woke, saw Nora still lying quietly beside him, and drifted off again.
Only at the crow of the rooster did he finally fall into a deeper sleep.
He had a strange dream.
In the dream Reiner became the lord of some land, and his territory held not only humans but many kinds of demi-humans.
In the bustling city everyone lived in harmony and lacked for nothing.
As he walked the streets, many commoners greeted him with cheerful smiles.
Nora’s temperament had changed as well; she liked to snuggle at his side and act spoiled.
Yet her left pupil had turned golden, exactly like a heterochromatic Persian cat, giving her a seductive air.
Reiner asked in confusion, “Are you Nora?”
She answered solemnly, “I’m Martina.”
“Nonsense.”
Nora cupped Reiner’s face, smiling. “You asked the silly question first; if I’m not Nora, who else would I be?”
In that dream he had three wives in all.
One was Nora, but no matter how he tried he could not see the other two clearly.
He leaned closer to identify them, and the dream suddenly dissolved.
Reiner felt his arms were empty, and when he opened his eyes he found himself alone in the bed.
Nora stood at the window, blankly staring outside.
“Nora?” Reiner called tentatively.
Her petite body gave no response, as if she had not heard him at all.
Reiner hurried over, gently patted her shoulder.
When Nora still failed to respond, Reiner forcibly turned her around.
“Uh…”
Nora’s eyes were vacant, and she looked somewhat dull.
Reiner called her name softly, rubbed her beast ears, and said, “Say something, how do you feel?”
Seeing no reaction, he scratched the fur inside her ears to stimulate her.
At last she reacted; her cat ears gave a strong shake.
Realizing this worked, Reiner carried her to the bed and began playing with her tail.
Nora’s tail was extremely sensitive, and she squirmed left and right in his arms.
Seeing her discomfort, Reiner let go of her tail and held her to calm her down.
Just then a familiar voice sounded in Reiner’s mind.
(Master?)
Nora lifted her head, reached out a slender hand, and tentatively touched Reiner’s cheek. “Master?”
Reiner let out a long breath.
His eyes felt a little moist.
“Thank goodness you’re alright.”
“Why are we at home? Weren’t we assembling at the gate?” Nora blinked rapidly, as if her eyes were uncomfortable.
It seemed she had lost the later memories.
Reiner hugged her tightly and spoke softly. “We went to the ruins and ran into a necromancer. That guy used a terrible spell, the expedition was routed, more things happened afterward, and then we came home. You were unconscious for a whole night. A mage named Anna said you would probably sleep until the necromancer was killed, but you woke up like a miracle.”
Nora rubbed her eyes hard. “I remember everything now.”
Then, a little excited, she said, “Master, I think I saw a deity. She was incredibly beautiful, even prettier than Junice.”
“Hmm?”
“I was in complete darkness, and she asked whether I wanted to return to you. I said yes, and I came back almost immediately… Before I left, she said she had given me a gift.”
Nora kept rubbing her eyes.
Reiner gently took her hands. “Stop rubbing or you’ll make them worse.”
Nora looked elsewhere, opening and closing one eye after the other to test them.
“What is it?”
Nora said anxiously, “Master! I can’t see with my left eye… nothing at all!”
Reiner spread her eyelid and inspected it carefully, but found nothing unusual.
He decisively used Appraisal.
[Name: Nora Hill
Age: 18
Sex: Female
Race: Cat-type demi-human
Current status: Healthy, blind in left eye.]
Reiner was speechless; everyone could see she was blind in her left eye, and the system’s Appraisal offered no explanation.
At that moment the door opened, and Daisy, awakened by their voices, stepped inside…
