Chapter 84: Letting Nora Hunt Wolves Alone
“Master, it’s so cold…”
At dawn, Nora snuggled in Reiner’s arms and refused to get out of bed for a long time.
Seeing the heavy snow outside the window, Reiner held her even tighter and said, “Then sleep a little longer; we’ll get up when the snow stops.”
Even though Cannon lay less than 300 kilometers from Melod, the temperature seemed much lower than in Melod.
Nora shook her head and muttered, “I’d better get up; aren’t we going out to earn money today? I can’t hold everyone back.”
“Why are you acting like Martina? Our goal is to make money while enjoying life; if we reverse that, living becomes exhausting.” Reiner gave her a quick kiss.
Nora opened her Magic Eye and stared fixedly at Reiner. “Master, why are you so good to me? I really don’t understand; the valuable thing on me… you already took it, so you shouldn’t still treat me this well.”
“It’s simple… I like cute catgirls.”
Nora whispered, “Sneaky Master…”
Watching her cheeks turn red, Reiner couldn’t help kissing her and asked, “Want to warm up your body?”
Nora lowered her voice and asked, “How do we warm up?”
…
An hour later, Nora came downstairs blushing; Junice, who had finished breakfast and was studying a water grimoire, looked up at Reiner and said, “Got up this late?”
“Something urgent came up just now.”
Junice narrowed her eyes and smiled meaningfully. “Eh…”
Reiner walked to the table and found Elyanna eating a bowl of black mush, her cheeks still flushed.
It was the result of boiling black bread until it fell apart.
Daisy had made this kind of breakfast once before, but it tasted terrible, and Reiner had eventually stopped her.
Daisy said solemnly, “Reiner, this elf just spoke to me, but I couldn’t understand her; seeing she couldn’t bite the black bread, I turned it into porridge for her.”
“Take that bowl away, and give her white bread from now on.”
“Yes, sir.” Daisy carried the bowl away and brought over the white bread that lay on a wooden tray.
Elyanna looked up at Reiner and pouted in grievance.
“My fault; I didn’t tell them beforehand, but it won’t happen again.”
“It’s so troublesome not being able to communicate; they don’t understand Elven.” Elyanna held the white bread in both hands and chewed with some effort. “Why don’t you teach me the demi-human tongue?”
“I’d recommend you learn some human languages instead; since you like adventuring, start with Rossnow, Dyast, and Barnite… the three human countries closest to your forest.”
“Which one do you use? Junice and I normally speak Dyast, but now I’d recommend Barnite because I’m away from Dyast for the time being.”
“Then I’ll follow your advice; I’ll come to your room every night to study.”
At night?
Reiner hurriedly shook his head. “I’m usually busy at night; I’ll teach you when I have free time.”
“At night… aren’t you always in the room? I just want to study a bit before you sleep.”
Cold sweat ran down Reiner’s back.
He really couldn’t explain the details to a pure little girl and could only reply casually, “You’ll understand when you grow up; I’ll teach you when I can.”
Although Elyanna felt confused, she still nodded obediently.
After breakfast, Reiner led everyone to the local Adventurers’ Guild.
Junice stood before the notice board for a while, then turned to Reiner and said, “There don’t seem to be many adventurers taking jobs here; these same quests were up yesterday, and they’re still here today.”
“In winter no one wants to go out, so the streets are empty; it’s normal that no quests get picked up.” He glanced back at Nora, saw her rubbing her hands and blowing on them, and cast Fireball to warm her hands.
Martina came over and said, “Me too.”
Tall and bundled tightly in cotton clothes, she clearly pretended to be fragile despite not fearing the cold at all.
But she was his wife after all, so he pampered her.
“Warm yourselves together; I’ll keep checking the quests.”
After searching for a while, he accepted a request to clear a wolf pack in a village north of the city.
The reward was 5 Barnite silver coins; it wasn’t much, but Reiner took it on the principle that even a small fly is still meat.
When they reached the target area, they tied their horses in the village and headed into the copse beside the forest to search for traces of the wolves.
“Can you smell anything?” Reiner asked, touching Nora’s cat ears.
“The snow covers scents, but I can try.” Nora sniffed hard and then led the way ahead.
Soon, they slipped into the small woods.
Elyanna tugged lightly on Reiner’s sleeve. “Reiner, where are we going?”
“Recently a lot of wild wolves around here have killed people; we need to cull the pack.”
“Do we have to kill them?”
“What else?” Reiner paused for a moment, then narrowed his eyes.
“I can drive them away.”
He had heard that some elves loved small animals; perhaps she did too.
“You don’t like wolves, do you?”
Elyanna shook her head decisively. “I don’t; wolves are cunning and greedy creatures. I prefer deer or horses. I just mean I might be able to help.”
“Hm? How so?”
“I can ask the little spirits to find the wolves for me.” With that she closed her eyes as if praying to something.
Nora urged, “Master, if we don’t go now, the scent we finally picked up will fade.”
Reiner patted Elyanna’s shoulder and said, “Next time. Let Nora handle it this time.”
“Alright…”
The group continued deeper into the woods.
In front of a clump of grass, Nora suddenly stopped, turned back, and said, “Wait here; I’ll go alone.”
“How many are there?”
“From the smell, about a dozen. Don’t worry, I can handle them alone.” Nora drew the mithril dagger at her waist.
“Go ahead, stay safe, and shout if you’re in danger.”
With her Magic Eye and her invisibility skills, Nora could silently kill several people if she wanted.
A wolf pack was no threat at all before her.
Nora nodded and slipped into the bushes.
Martina asked doubtfully, “Letting Nora go alone? What if she runs into danger?”
Immediately Daisy’s inner voice drifted over: (Does he not love Nora anymore?)
Reiner quickly reassured them, “Relax, Nora’s far stronger than you think; I guarantee she’ll be back in no time…”
