Chapter 89: Reiner, Not Quite Human

After Yule left, everyone finished breakfast.

They each returned to their own rooms to rest.

Reiner intended to lie in bed for a while and get up at noon.

Instead, Elyanna came trotting into Reiner’s room with her staff in her arms.

She seemed to have no guard against the opposite sex; seeing Martina sprawled on the bed, she sat right down on Reiner’s bed as well.

“What are you doing?”

“Teach me Barnite; I want to become a great adventurer, too,” Elyanna said earnestly, her eyes full of longing.

It was clear she truly longed to go adventuring.

Seeing her spoil the moment, Martina reached out, dragged Elyanna away, and pinned her down, bullying her hard.

“You nasty elf, always ruining my fun; if you hadn’t come, I could at least have had another round this afternoon!”

Elyanna wiggled her pointed ears and giggled, “That tickles! What are you looking for on me? I don’t have any white bread.”

The two of them did not share a language and kept talking past each other.

After bullying her enough, Martina curled up in the corner of the bed and glared at them puffily.

Reiner tidied her messy blue hair and said softly, “You teach me something this morning and I’ll teach you something this afternoon.”

Elyanna blinked in confusion, “Teach you something? What could I teach?”

Reiner thought for a moment and recalled the defensive spell Elyanna had cast yesterday.

He had seen a boulder crash into it and crumble into fine sand.

“That spell you used yesterday… Teacher Elyanna, teach me that,” Reiner said with a grin.

The defensive magic was truly powerful; if he could master it, he might no longer need Nora’s constant protection.

Elyanna’s cheeks flushed and she shrank toward the corner.

She muttered softly, “I can’t teach that; only we elves can learn it…”

“Nonsense; how do you know if you haven’t tried?” Reiner akimboed and continued, “What element is that spell? I think I can learn it.”

Elyanna gently prodded Reiner’s chest with her staff, scooted back, and leaned against Martina, “It’s light magic; humans cannot absorb light elements, so even if you learn the incantation you can’t use it.”

“Light magic?”

Elyanna nodded vigorously, “That’s right.”

“Junice told me magic had only five elements, didn’t she?”

Elyanna hugged her staff and raised her head proudly, “Wrong, wrong, wrong; strictly speaking, humans can learn only 5 kinds of natural magic. Besides fire, water, earth, wind, and lightning, there are also the light and shadow magic we elves excel at, the dark magic and blood magic favored by beastmen and demons, and beyond those 9, the spatial magic unique to the ancient dragons. Humans can study only the 5 basic elemental magics; the others belong to other races… do you understand?”

“So you’re saying that just by being born human, I’m weak?”

“Not exactly… humans are still the most numerous on the continent; with numbers comes strength.” Elyanna felt something soft under her and turned to find two jelly-like mounds.

Reiner rubbed his chin, narrowed his eyes, and said, “Teacher Junice didn’t give me the whole picture…”

Elyanna gently patted Reiner’s head, “It’s all right; you’re already amazing, Reiner. I’ve never met a human who speaks so many languages.”

Reiner sighed.

After thinking for a moment, he raised an eyebrow and asked, “How about letting me try?”

Elyanna narrowed her eyes teasingly, “You still won’t give up?”

“Of course not; I don’t want to give up something so powerful. Can you awaken me to it?”

Elyanna looked speechless, “Awaken? That term applies only when humans know nothing about natural magic. Light magic is a racial talent of ours; I really can’t awaken it in you.”

“Just give it a try; it won’t take long anyway,” Reiner coaxed as he held her arm.

Elyanna let out a long sigh and said helplessly, “Fine, I can’t do anything with you; I’ll try a little…”

She slowly took Reiner’s hand, held it tightly, and whispered an incantation.

At the same time, Martina’s inner voice drifted over.

(Why are they holding hands? No!)

Reiner looked back at her, and the moment their eyes met she pretended to be busy again.

Elyanna tapped Reiner’s head with her staff, “Focus.”

“Okay.”

Reiner closed his eyes and carefully felt the subtle changes coming through his hand.

The mana crystal hovering in the endless darkness had absorbed many elements over time and was now streaked with every color.

Just then the system’s voice sounded beside his ear.

[Other element detected. Awakening new elemental power for the host…]

Within mere seconds, a brilliant light illuminated the mana crystal in the darkness.

The light converged into a sphere and poured into the multicolored crystal.

Here it comes.

“All right, you can open your eyes now,” Elyanna said gently.

She looked at Reiner with a cute expression, patted his head reassuringly, “Well? You probably didn’t see anything, right? It’s okay; you’re already impressive.”

Reiner’s lips curled slightly, “I suppose I only need to recite the spell and nothing else to cast it, right?”

Elyanna murmured, “That may be, but…”

“Just tell me and let me try.”

Elyanna sighed deeply and said helplessly, “Fine, you really won’t give up. I’ll give you the incantation; try it yourself.”

She softly chanted the spell.

Reiner stood aside, memorizing it carefully and pondering.

With his exceptional talent, he soon grasped a hint of the trick.

A faint heat rose in the center of his palm.

Lying in Martina’s arms, Elyanna watched Reiner with interest and mumbled, “Martina is so warm and comfy; I’ll nap in her arms first. Wake me up in the afternoon…”

“Don’t sleep yet; see if it’s like this.” Reiner chanted, a magic circle formed in his hand, and a sapphire defense instantly unfolded, enveloping him completely.

Elyanna’s eyes went wide; she rubbed them several times and, seeing she wasn’t hallucinating, finally gasped in amazement.

“Eh…”

Reiner could barely suppress his smile, “Say something… did I get it right?”

Elyanna stayed silent for a long time, merely staring blankly.

Reiner suddenly shivered, feeling as though something were watching him.

After a while, Elyanna finally spoke, “Reiner, you probably aren’t human, are you?”
