Chapter 98: I Can Do It!
“Can we really handle this with just the few of us?” Junice crouched beside Reiner and muttered softly.
It was the dead of night, and they hid in a patch of shrubs on the outskirts of the orc encampment, covered by the moonlight.
From time to time patrol orc warriors passed right by them, but the night was so dark that none of them noticed the people hidden in the bushes.
“We can give it a try; when Aidan launches the raid, the orc chieftain and the priest will definitely come out to direct the battle, so all we need to do is wait here and ambush them; if it turns into close combat, Martina might really have a chance to kill them.”
The task Aidan had assigned them was to decapitate the orc commanders while the two armies were locked in combat.
This mission to slay the Minotaur chieftain had been stuck on their quest list for ages.
They still did not know whether the Black Wolf Clan’s chieftain was that minotaur.
“It’ll work as long as I’m here; mere orcs, I can cut one down with a single swing.” Martina brimmed with confidence.
She hugged her greatsword to her chest, looking as though she could not wait to jump in.
Reiner looked back at Elyanna and said with concern, “When the fight starts, just keep summoning tree spirits to cause chaos, then focus on protecting yourself; once blades are flying we might not be able to watch over you.”
To everyone she seemed like a child who knew nothing at all.
Honestly, if she had not cried and insisted on coming, Reiner would rather have left her at home.
“I’m not a child… stop underestimating me.” Elyanna puffed up her cheeks.
Reiner’s gaze involuntarily dropped.
As flat as a tabletop… wasn’t that a child?
“Just make sure you stay safe.”
While they waited, Reiner’s hand wandered to Nora’s cat tail, playing with it nonstop.
He only withdrew his hand when Nora’s complaining thought reached him.
(I can’t concentrate when you keep touching my tail, Master, stop it…)
I’ll play with it later.
After they had lain in ambush for a long time, noisy shouts came from afar as orc sentries yelled loudly.
“Those sly humans are back again!”
“Nobody sleep!”
Before long, torches flared inside the orc camp.
Disheveled orcs ran out brandishing axes, and the darkness around them was driven back by the torchlight.
Reiner pressed himself even lower, while Martina flattened herself against the ground.
“A lot of orcs are heading toward Aidan, at least 400 of them; they really are an all-soldier nation,” Junice’s pupils widened, and she suddenly dropped flat as well, “A raider’s coming.”
By raider she meant the smaller orcs who rode black wolves.
Those guys were lightning fast and excelled at surprise attacks.
Reiner narrowed his eyes and watched through the gaps in the leaves.
A raider happened to pass right in front of him.
The wolf seemed to sense Reiner and suddenly stopped at the edge of the bushes, sniffing around.
The dwarf orc on its back kept urging, “What are you doing? This isn’t the time to dawdle, move!”
The black wolf bared its fangs.
Before they could react, cold steel flashed from the shrubbery, and a dagger pierced the orc’s throat.
The blade flipped and stabbed into the wolf’s skull.
It let out one wretched howl and died before it could fight back.
Nora dragged the bodies into the bushes, and Reiner deftly sent a stream of water to cover them.
The group continued to lie in wait.
A while later, a bright green light flickered inside the orc camp.
Reiner remembered that glow well… it belonged to fel energy.
Soon after, a dozen or so orc warriors wreathed in green light and pumped full of excitement burst from the camp and ran toward the southern forest.
They were probably going to cause trouble for Aidan.
For this night raid, however, Aidan had gathered 400 warriors ready to fight.
Reiner had already witnessed their near superhuman physiques.
He doubted that a dozen elite mobs could do them any real harm.
Nora suddenly spoke: “Something’s coming.”
As soon as she finished, Reiner saw a robe-clad, gaunt, masked orc tremble out of the camp.
He held a stone staff, and the exposed parts of his body were wrapped in milky-white bandages.
As expected, this had to be the orc priest.
“Should I go now?” Martina whispered.
She lay prone as well, peeping through the leaves.
“Wait a bit longer; it’s not time yet.”
Just then a stirring horn resounded from the camp, followed by drums that shook the soul.
The orc warriors, as if injected with stimulants, surged out like a tide.
Four burly minotaurs marched through the gate carrying their horns high and kept blowing with all their might.
A dozen seconds later a gigantic minotaur appeared before them, flames of anger seeming to burn in his bright eyes.
Muscles bulged across his upper body, and a heavy-looking bronze drum hung at his waist.
There was no doubt… this was their mission target, the Minotaur chieftain.
Killing him would yield a lightning magic book.
While Reiner’s thoughts were drifting, his eardrums suddenly stung.
“Boom boom boom! Boom boom!”
The Minotaur chieftain kept beating the drum, and each heavy strike made Reiner’s heart jolt violently.
At the same time the thoughts of the two beast-eared girls came through.
Nora: (What the heck is that sound… it’s hurting my ears!)
Martina: (Are we really going to fight that guy?)
The two of them seemed terrified.
Apparently the drumbeat had a mind-altering effect.
Since gaining the Magic Eye, Nora’s Spirit stat had risen from D to B.
Had this been earlier, she probably could not have borne such torment.
“Junice, Elyanna, you two all right?”
As mages their magic resistance should have been higher than that of the beast-eared girls.
After hearing the drum, they showed virtually no reaction.
Junice answered, “The sound makes me a little anxious, but nothing else.”
Elyanna spoke as well, “Same here, just a bit uneasy, nothing more.”
Seeing the enemy draw nearer, Reiner said, “Most of the orcs are at the front line now; in a moment Martina and I will handle the Minotaur chieftain, Nora, find a way to kill that orc priest, and Junice and Elyanna, jump in when you see an opening. If you can, keep those four horn-blowing minotaurs busy; once Martina, Nora, and I finish our targets, we’ll come help you immediately.”
“Got it.”
Reiner lowered his head to look at Martina.
Sweat beaded on her forehead; she was clearly afraid of the Minotaur chieftain.
Like coaxing a child, Reiner began to cheer her up: “Martina, you’re the finest warrior among us; that Minotaur chieftain is no more than an ant in your hands, and you can definitely slay him. Even if you can’t, it doesn’t matter; I’ll always have your back.”
The pep talk worked, her wavering heart grew resolute, and she gritted her teeth and said, “I can do it!”
