“Miss Su, Mr. Su’s health is not in grave danger. The blood he coughed up earlier was likely due to a surge of anger causing temporary discomfort,” the doctor concluded after a thorough examination.
Su Weichu frowned slightly, sensing something amiss. However, she chose not to refute the doctor’s diagnosis.
Later that evening, once her grandfather had fallen asleep, she tiptoed out of the hospital room, standing in the dimly lit corridor, phone in hand. Her expression flickered with hesitation.
Yet, thinking about her grandfather’s condition, she eventually pressed a number she had once sworn never to dial again.
“Chu Chu, you finally took the initiative to call me,” Lin Huaiyu’s voice carried an unmistakable note of pleasure.
Su Weichu lowered her gaze, her tone indifferent. “My grandfather is ill. I want to ask your friend, Jiang Haojin, to examine him.”
“Mr. Su is sick? Is it serious?” Lin Huaiyu’s voice held a trace of concern.
Su Weichu pursed her lips slightly and chose to be honest. “I don’t know. The doctors here didn’t find anything unusual. They claim his coughing up blood was due to emotional distress, but I don’t believe that’s the case. He wasn’t particularly angry before it happened.”
“I understand. I’ll call Jiang Haojin right away and have him take a look.”
“Thank you. Consider this a favor I owe you. You can name your price, as long as it’s within my ability to fulfill,” Su Weichu stated coldly, unwilling to be indebted to Lin Huaiyu.
A bitter chuckle came through the receiver. “Chu Chu, do we really need to be so calculative?”
“We do.”
Her reply was decisive and without hesitation.
The other end of the line fell silent.
Just as Su Weichu thought he might have hung up, Lin Huaiyu’s deep voice came through once more. “Fine. If that’s the case, then my condition is that we remarry.”
“Lin Huaiyu, I said within my ability,” Su Weichu responded icily, unfazed by his request. “If you insist on this, I will find someone else to treat my grandfather.”
Perhaps realizing that she meant every word, Lin Huaiyu relented, sighing. “Alright. I’ll bring Jiang Haojin over shortly.”
Su Weichu acknowledged this with a simple “Mm” before ending the call.
Less than an hour later, Lin Huaiyu arrived at the hospital with Jiang Haojin in tow.
Jiang Haojin was indeed skilled. After a careful examination, he turned to Su Weichu with a grave expression.
“Miss Su, your instincts were right. Mr. Su’s condition was not caused by anger. He has been poisoned.”
“What? Poisoned?!”
Su Weichu gasped, her voice rising in shock.
Jiang Haojin cast a glance at the sleeping old man, then gestured for her to lower her voice. “Miss Su, please keep your voice down. At his age, being startled awake could affect his recovery. And with us appearing here, it would be difficult to explain.”
“Don’t worry,” Su Weichu assured him in a hushed tone. “Before he went to bed, I had the doctor add a mild sedative to his medication to help him sleep peacefully.”
Jiang Haojin raised an eyebrow and chuckled. “You and Lin Huaiyu really are a match. Your methods are strikingly similar.”
He was referring to the times Lin Huaiyu had used similar tactics—sedating Su Weichu to extract her cells for research.
Oblivious to this hidden meaning, Su Weichu shot Lin Huaiyu a glance but said nothing. Her voice was detached. “I have long severed my ties with Mr. Lin. Dr. Jiang, I hope you don’t make such mistakes again. Let’s focus on my grandfather’s illness.”
Jiang Haojin glanced at Lin Huaiyu, his expression sympathetic, as if saying, This is all I can do for you.
“Although I’ve identified that Mr. Su has been poisoned, I need further tests to determine the exact toxic elements in his system before I can formulate an antidote. I will need to take some of his blood for analysis.”
“Go ahead,” Su Weichu agreed without hesitation. “When do you need to take the sample?”
“Right now.”
Jiang Haojin retrieved a syringe from his medical kit and began drawing blood. As he worked, he added, “Until I develop an antidote, I need to monitor Mr. Su’s condition closely. I’ll have my friend here—” he motioned toward Lin Huaiyu, “—keep an eye on him in the hospital.”
At this, Su Weichu frowned slightly, visibly displeased.
For a moment, she even suspected this was an excuse for Lin Huaiyu to stay close to her.
But when she turned to Jiang Haojin, he looked nothing but professional. His expression was serious, his demeanor strictly businesslike.
Perhaps she was overthinking it.
After drawing the blood, Jiang Haojin noticed that Su Weichu had not rejected his proposal. He smirked slightly and threw Lin Huaiyu a look as if to say, That’s the best I can do for you, buddy.
When Old Master Su woke up, he immediately sensed something was off.
Su Weichu walked in just then, carrying breakfast.
Seeing him awake, she smiled warmly. “Grandpa, you’re up. Perfect timing—I brought breakfast.”
The old man narrowed his eyes at her. “Brat, did you do something to me last night?”
His sharpness caught Su Weichu off guard, but she quickly recovered, scratching her nose sheepishly. “Grandpa, you’re amazing. I was so careful, yet you still noticed.”
“Don’t try to sweet-talk me. Tell me honestly—what were you up to?”
His sharp gaze locked onto hers.
Knowing she couldn’t hide it, Su Weichu confessed, “After the hospital’s examination, I felt something was wrong. But I didn’t want you to worry, so I had a friend conduct a private examination.”
“And? What did they find?”
Her fingers clenched slightly, and after a moment of hesitation, she finally admitted, “Grandpa, you’ve been poisoned.”
“Poisoned?”
Old Master Su’s expression stiffened. His gaze turned cold, deep in thought.
Seeing this, Su Weichu grew worried. “Grandpa?”
After a long pause, the old man finally spoke. “Chu Chu, I’ve thought about it. Later today, I will have Lawyer Chen come over and transfer all my company shares to you.”
Su Weichu’s eyes widened in shock.
Before she could even process what he had just said, she saw her grandfather pick up the phone and call the lawyer.
By noon, everything was finalized.
Old Master Su gazed at her with satisfaction. “With these shares, you’ll have a strong foundation. If anything happens to me, at least I can rest easy.”
“Grandpa, don’t say that! You’re going to live a long and healthy life! My friend is already working on an antidote. You’ll be fine!”
Su Weichu panicked, thinking his words stemmed from fear of the poisoning.
Before her words had fully settled, the hospital room door was suddenly shoved open.
Su Hetong and his family stormed in, their expressions dark and filled with hostility.
