Chapter 39: He Was Injured

Lu Yunshang put her phone in her bag and greeted Huang Siyuan and Su Qiyi. “I’ll go answer a call.” She grabbed her bag and left the private room.

The hallway was empty; Fu Hanzhou had disappeared. Lu Yunshang glanced at the sign and headed towards the elevator.

As the elevator approached the top floor, her heart beat faster, and her palms sweated. With a “ding,” the elevator doors opened. Lu Yunshang peeked out; the hallway was quiet and empty. She didn’t know where to go.

“Ding”—this time it was a text message. It was from Fu Changqing.

Fu Changqing: Go straight to the end and open the largest door.

Lu Yunshang was puzzled. How did he know she was coming up? But she followed his instructions, walking straight until she saw a large door. She pushed it, and it opened.

Inside was a suite with a spacious, luxuriously decorated living room filled with antiques, but it felt cold. She closed the door and called out as she walked in, “Is anyone there? Mr. Fu…”

“In here,” a weak male voice came from an inner room.

Lu Yunshang frowned, cautiously following the sound. As she reached the doorway, a strong smell of blood hit her nose. She stopped, her breathing quickening. The room smelled wrong; it was definitely blood.

The lighting was dim. A large double bed sat in the center of the room, and Fu Changqing lay motionless on it.

“Come here,” he said in a weak voice, “Help me.”

Lu Yunshang froze. Was he injured?

As she approached the bed, she saw his bloody shoulder and the sweat on his forehead.

“Mr. Fu, I—I’ll call an ambulance,” she stammered, grabbing her phone to dial, but her hand trembled violently, her vision blurred by tears.

“No,” Fu Changqing stopped her. “Don’t call. Bogen is already on his way. He’ll handle it. Calm down first.”

Lu Yunshang nodded vigorously, trying to calm herself. She wiped away her tears, took a deep breath, and asked, “What can I do to help?”

“Give me some water.”

“Okay,” she looked around but saw no water.

“There’s mineral water in the living room,” Fu Changqing said.

She quickly ran back to the living room and found mineral water on the bar. She took a bottle back to the room, opened it, and helped Fu Changqing sit up to drink. After he finished, she gently laid him back down.

“You didn’t ask how I got injured?” Fu Changqing said.

“Would Mr. Fu tell me?”

“Later.”

“Okay.”

Silence fell between them. Lu Yunshang bit her lip, staring at his wound, her heart in turmoil.

To break the silence, Fu Changqing asked, “Did you have fun?”

Lu Yunshang hesitated. “Yes, thank you, Mr. Fu, for arranging the large private room and all the food and drinks.”

Fu Changqing took a deep breath, his brow furrowing slightly from the pain. “That’s good.”

Lu Yunshang felt nervous. “Mr. Fu, do you really not need to go to the hospital? Let me help you with something.”

She took some tissues from the nightstand and wiped the sweat from his forehead.

“Thank you. Just keep me company and don’t let me fall asleep.”

Lu Yunshang bit her lower lip, worried.

Seeing her anxiety, Fu Changqing forced a smile. “Don’t worry, I won’t die.”

Lu Yunshang opened her mouth, unsure what to say.

“Please keep this a secret. Don’t let anyone know, including Mr. Liu, especially the Fu family. Don’t reveal a single word, understand?”

Lu Yunshang nodded vigorously. She looked at the wound—torn and bloody—wondering how it happened.

“It must hurt, right?”

“It’s okay,” Fu Changqing said. “I’ve had worse injuries.”

Lu Yunshang’s heart ached. How could this be? Wasn’t he the heir to Fu Group? With so many bodyguards, why would he get injured?

Fu Changqing saw her concern.

“My position isn’t as comfortable as outsiders think. Life isn’t easy. If I could, I wish I’d been born into an ordinary family, living peacefully and simply with my parents.”

“Mr. Fu, your parents?”

“They’re both gone,” his eyes dimmed with sadness. “Ten years ago, on my birthday.”

“Ten years ago?” Lu Yunshang’s heart skipped a beat. She didn’t understand why she was so sensitive to this date, perhaps because ten years ago, she saved a boy.

In the dim light, Lu Yunshang had a strange feeling that Fu Changqing’s somber eyes resembled that boy’s. She clearly remembered the light in the boy’s eyes when he saw her at the bottom of the cliff.

He said, “Help me. I can’t die here. Go find the police. Don’t trust anyone on the way.”

Lu Yunshang gave him her water and bun, then ran down the mountain for help. When the police and firefighters took him away, he said, “Remember, my last name is Fu, but don’t tell anyone. I’ll come back for you. Wait for me.”

Lu Yunshang urged Fu Changqing to continue. “What happened to them?”

After a moment, Fu Changqing said softly, “An accident.”

He said nothing more, and Lu Yunshang didn’t press further. She understood; this was likely a painful memory he didn’t want to revisit.

Urgent footsteps sounded outside. Lu Yunshang felt nervous.

Jiang Bogen appeared at the doorway with a medical kit. Seeing Lu Yunshang, he paused, nodding. “Miss Lu is here too?”

“I asked her to come,” Fu Changqing said. “It’s fine. She won’t talk. Treat my wound first.”

Jiang Bogen looked serious and slightly angry. “What happened this time?”

Seeing Fu Changqing’s shoulder wound, he gasped. “A gunshot wound?”

“Yes.”

Lu Yunshang was shocked and frightened. A gunshot wound? How did he get shot? She imagined scenes from movies: the assassination of a wealthy heir, more than once? This was a cliché plot. Who did it?

Her curiosity piqued, Lu Yunshang strained her neck, holding her breath to listen. But Jiang Bogen said nothing more. He opened his medical kit, expertly put on gloves, and took out antiseptic.

“Miss Lu, please help. Take off Mr. Fu’s shirt.”

Lu Yunshang looked at Fu Changqing shyly, unsure how to proceed.

Jiang Bogenlooked at her. “Miss Lu, have you never seen a shirtless man before?”

Lu Yunshang was embarrassed, reluctantly unbuttoning Fu Changqing’s shirt. She told herself he was a patient, not a man.

But when her hand accidentally touched his skin, it felt like an electric shock. Her heart felt like it might explode from the rapid beating.

Jiang Bogen couldn’t stand it anymore. He quickly took off his gloves and ripped off Fu Changqing’s shirt, throwing it on the floor.

Seeing his strong chest muscles and eight-pack abs, Lu Yunshang’s face flushed red. She quickly turned her back to him.

Jiang Bogen thought she was afraid of blood. While putting on his gloves again, he said, “Miss Lu is quite resilient. In medical school, many female students fainted at the sight of blood.”

Lu Yunshang’s mouth twitched. “Sorry.”

She wasn’t afraid of blood; she was embarrassed. She didn’t know what Jiang Bogen was doing, only hearing him say, “Fortunately, the wound isn’t deep. I can see the bullet; it didn’t hit any vital organs. You’re lucky. Do you think you can escape death every time?”
