Chapter 18: Killing Wolves
Yan Huan deeply agreed with his point of view. She had to say, her fourth uncle was quite unlucky. She heard that while relieving himself, he was teased by monkeys. The monkeys threw stones and splashed him with feces all over his body. To make matters worse, his embarrassing appearance was seen by others and spread far and wide. She even felt sorry for him.
If it were her, she wouldn’t have the face to walk with everyone anymore.
Thinking about how he had treated her before, and then recalling that hilarious scene, why did she suddenly feel like laughing out loud?
Since he wasn’t really sick, laughing a bit couldn’t be considered heartless, right? Then, Yan Jinzhao saw his always sulky sixth sister suddenly burst into laughter.
Yan Jinzhao was dumbfounded. His sixth sister’s reaction time was a bit too long.
However, although the laughter came a bit late, he had finally managed to make his sixth sister laugh, hadn’t he?
Seeing Yan Huan finally smile, all the older brothers finally breathed a sigh of relief. However, this also strengthened the brothers’ previous thought. It seemed that their sixth sister’s unhappiness was indeed because of their fourth uncle. They must keep a close eye on him in the future and not let him bully their sixth sister again.
When it was time to rest in the evening, Yan Huan immediately pulled Jiang Duo’er and went into the small woods again.
The roadside was full of ordinary flowers and plants, which she had already collected. To complete that task, it seemed she could only go deeper into the woods.
Perfect, she could also perfectly explain the source of the honey when she returned after completing the task.
The two walked for a long time before finding a secluded cave. They decided to hide inside to eat some grilled meat first. They had been rushing for the past few days and hadn’t had many good meals.
The Yan family’s belongings were mostly stored in the space, with all kinds of kitchen utensils and seasonings. It was still possible to enjoy some grilled meat.
They lit the stove, added an iron plate on top, brushed some oil, and thinly sliced the pork belly, spreading the pieces flat. There weren’t many seasonings; chili powder and Sichuan pepper powder were newly made during their recent boredom, and they smelled very fragrant. They added some salt and sprinkled some chopped green onions. If they had cumin powder, it would be even more tempting. The meat slices had just started to curl slightly and weren’t fully cooked yet, but Jiang Duo’er was already impatiently stomping her feet beside her.
It was early autumn, and the daytime heat had subsided in the mornings and evenings. Feeling the gentle breeze mixed with the scent of earth while eating this tempting barbecue, the taste was something only those who had experienced it would know. It was a pity that the cola they had before was all gone. Otherwise, having an ice-cold cola at this moment would have been divine.
After grilling the pork belly, the two looked at the empty iron plate in front of them, still wanting more. They couldn’t delay for too long, so they got up to pack their things.
However, just as they stood up, Yan Huan felt a gaze fixed on her from the cave entrance. At the same time, Jiang Duo’er also had the same feeling and unconsciously pulled Yan Huan behind her.
“Huan’er, there might be someone outside. You stay here, I’ll go out and take a look.”
This place was far from the camp, and it was sparsely populated. Logically, there shouldn’t be anyone. Both of them felt a tightening in their hearts.
Yan Huan grabbed Jiang Duo’er, telling her not to be impulsive.
This was the deep forest, and it wasn’t certain whether what was outside was even human. They had to figure out the situation first and couldn’t rashly let Duo’er go out.
It was already starting to get dark outside, and the light that could shine into the cave was even weaker. Yan Huan looked at the stove beside her, kicked over the still-burning stove with one foot, and then picked up some branches and threw them on top. Soon, a large fire pit was burning on the ground.
The raging fire instantly lit up the cave and also illuminated the outside.
Upon clearly seeing the situation outside the cave, Yan Huan gasped.
Standing at the cave entrance were two wolves. Of course, because the cave entrance wasn’t large, they could only see two. How many more were behind them was still unknown. These wolves were probably attracted by the smell of meat.
When Jiang Duo’er saw that they were just a few wolves, she instantly breathed a sigh of relief.
Compared to wolves, she was more afraid of people. She picked up a thick branch and rushed outside.
When she rushed outside, she could clearly see the situation. There was only a dozen or so wolves, and she didn’t even see a leader wolf. Jiang Duo’er didn’t take them seriously at all. She swung the stick with powerful force, hitting accurately and fiercely.
Wolves had copper heads, iron bones, and tofu waists. Duo’er’s every strike targeted the wolves’ weaknesses. Soon, this pack of wolves was at a disadvantage.
Yan Huan watched and slowly felt relieved. She also lit another fire outside the cave to prevent accidents.
The fear of fire in wild beasts was innate, and wolves were no exception.
As the fire grew stronger, the wolf pack gradually calmed down. Looking at the many companions who had died on the ground, the remaining wolves chose to retreat.
Wolves were social animals and extremely vengeful with high intelligence. If they were entangled by a wolf pack, even if Duo’er’s combat power was high, two fists couldn’t fight four hands, and she would probably have difficulty escaping.
The two discussed it and decided not to look for plants anymore. They would go back directly. Moreover, it wasn’t early anymore. If they didn’t go back, it would get dark, and it would be even more unsafe here after dark.
Six wolf corpses lay on the ground. It was naturally impossible to leave them behind.
They first threw the wolf corpses into the space and would take them out near the camp. At that time, they could divide them between the two families, and it would last them a few more days. Although neither of them had eaten wolf meat before, they heard that it tasted similar to dog meat, just a bit more gamey. If they cooked it with strong flavors, the taste definitely wouldn’t be bad.
The two quickly left the woods. They hadn’t completed their task today, but at least it wasn’t a complete loss. Although they encountered a small accident, it was ultimately without danger, not a bad day.
It was already late when the two returned to the camp. Countless fires, large and small, had been lit in the camp. Although the weather wasn’t cold, the woods were very dangerous, and keeping fires burning to drive away wild beasts was necessary.
Seeing the two of them carrying several dead wolves, everyone was in an uproar. In the end, even the officials were alarmed.
Zhao Song walked forward, wishing he could clasp his fists and call Jiang Duo’er a hero.
These were wolves! This girl killed six with a single effort! This was too tough, fierce! Now that he thought about it, was it an unwise choice to let her into the mountains? The iron chains on her feet didn’t seem to have any restraining effect on her at all.
Not only Zhao Song, but even the people from other families looked at Jiang Duo’er with indescribable expressions.
Yan Huan chuckled inwardly. Duo’er’s future husband would definitely not come from this group of people in front of her. Looking at the way these people looked at Duo’er, some looked as if they were seeing a tigress, their eyes full of terror, while others seemed to think she was a goddess descended from heaven, not to be defiled.
The two gave one wolf to the officials. The Yan family, with more people, took three of the remaining five. Jiang Duo’er carried one home herself, as her family wasn’t lacking in food anyway.
Without Yan Huan even needing to instruct, Mama Jiang happily led people to deal with the wolf corpses.
They hadn’t finished eating the game from the last hunt, and now they had three more wolves. It felt like their lives were getting better and better.
As long as there was food, people’s fear of the unknown would lessen. Smiles appeared on the faces of everyone in the Yan family’s main branch.
