Chapter 6 System Mall
But most of the items in the marketplace were future technology, along with some ancient secret formulas, internal cultivation methods, and medical techniques. As for rice, flour, grains, and oil—there were none at all. Thinking about it, this made sense. After all, in the apocalypse there wasn’t even a single living thing left, so how could there be rice or cooking oil?
Tang Wanning opened the capsule section and was greeted with a variety of capsules:
…These capsules were amazing—much more powerful than any special-effect drugs of the future, and they weren’t even expensive. The most incredible part was that they had no side effects. That alone was extraordinary.
…Note: all martial arts techniques required 200 points each.
She really wanted to learn internal cultivation, especially telekinesis—then she could quietly move everything out of the Xu household without leaving a trace! But the price was jaw-dropping. Since she had to learn internal cultivation first before telekinesis, she decided it was better to take things step by step.
Scrolling further down, Tang Wanning discovered storage compartments:
…There were also futuristic household appliances:
…Note: all fully automatic all-in-one machines cost 100 points each.
The more she looked, the happier Tang Wanning felt. The system marketplace really was comprehensive.
Just as she was about to close it, she noticed one more category at the very end—the one-time exchange section.
Opening it, she saw:
…Note: all one-time items lasted only two minutes and cost 20 points each.
Seeing the system scan and clairaudience, Tang Wanning was secretly delighted. With these, she could discreetly take all of the Xu family’s money and valuables! Just imagining that scene made her grin. She had to use the next three days wisely to collect as many plants and animals as possible.
After her excitement faded, she continued browsing the marketplace, and before long, she drifted off to sleep.
The next day.
Sunlight slipped through the imperfectly drawn curtains, landing on Tang Wanning’s face. Perhaps because of the brightness, her long eyelashes fluttered slightly, like a butterfly beating its wings. She frowned a little and lazily raised an arm to shield her eyes from the light.
Five minutes later, she finally opened her drowsy eyes. But she didn’t hurry to get up. From today onward, she had no intention of helping the Xu family with anything.
Of course, Bai Xiuying would never let her have her way. About ten minutes after Tang Wanning woke up, there was a knock at her door.
Knock, knock, knock.
As she knocked, Bai Xiuying asked, “Wanning, why aren’t you up yet? Is your body still not recovered?”
Hearing her voice, Tang Wanning crossed her legs, swaying her foot as she lowered her voice and replied:
“Mother, father, mother, and little brother were scared half to death when I fainted yesterday. They said I’ve fainted several times these past months, so they told me not to work in the fields or do housework for a few days. The doctor also said I’ve been overworked and need proper rest.”
Thankfully there was a door between them, otherwise Bai Xiuying might have ground her back teeth to pieces in anger. Even so, her face darkened instantly. Just a little heatstroke and she was acting so delicate—chicken soup, rest, all just excuses to be lazy! Clearly this little slut had a wandering heart. No, she needed to be properly disciplined soon, before she started entertaining ideas she shouldn’t.
Suppressing her anger, Bai Xiuying softened her voice:
“Then you rest well. After I finish breakfast, I’ll bring it to you.”
“Thank you, Mother.” Tang Wanning coughed lightly. “When I’ve recovered, I’ll go to town and buy you two new sets of clothes.”
After all, making promises didn’t cost a thing. Sure enough, Bai Xiuying’s expression brightened instantly upon hearing the sweet words. She grinned wide, her voice suddenly cheerful:
“You child, why waste money on that? I’m already so old, I don’t need new clothes.”
“Mother, you’re just in your early forties, hardly old at all.”
“You cheeky girl.” Bai Xiuying smiled. “I’ll go make you two brown-sugar eggs. Get up when you’re ready.”
“Alright, thank you, Mother.”
After sending her away, Tang Wanning lazed in bed for a while before slowly getting up to change.
Just as she stepped out, she saw Bai Xiuying coming toward her with the brown-sugar eggs.
“Wanning, I was just about to call you—come eat quickly, it won’t taste good once it cools.”
Tang Wanning smiled sweetly, eyes curved like crescent moons. “Thank you, Mother, you’re the best.”
In the past, she would always offer the eggs to Bai Xiuying. But today, she was determined not to let her have them. To make sure Bai Xiuying had no excuse to take them, Tang Wanning didn’t even brush her teeth—she simply sat down and finished them all within minutes, drinking the sweet broth to the last drop.
“Mother, your cooking just gets better and better.” She blinked playfully, then added coquettishly, “I want to eat your braised pork at lunch, can I?”
Looking at the spotlessly clean bowl, Bai Xiuying was fuming inside, though she forced a smile uglier than crying. Before she could vent her anger, Tang Wanning’s last request nearly made her face collapse entirely.
This little slut was going too far—she wanted her to cook braised pork? Why didn’t she just reach for the heavens?!
Just as Bai Xiuying was about to snap, Xu Dingbang walked out of the room.
“Wanning really has worked hard these past days. Later, I’ll have your mother buy some meat so she can make braised pork for you at noon.”
“Thank you, Father.”
Xu Dingbang smiled indulgently. “We’re family—no need to be so polite.”
