Su Ying’s cooking wasn’t bad. Though she didn’t cook much in the modern era, she knew how to. When she had first started working, she hadn’t had much money, so cooking for herself was the cheaper, more economical option.
Later on, as she got busier—her surgical schedule packed and hospital responsibilities piling up—she had fewer opportunities to cook.
By the time Du Feng had finished helping Gu Jinghong and opened the bathroom door, the fragrance from the kitchen had already wafted out.
“Commander, Sister-in-law’s making dinner. Smells amazing.”
Gu Jinghong shot him a glare, and Du Feng quickly shut his mouth and bent down to carry him.
Gu Jinghong sighed.
“Lucky you, getting to enjoy the treatment that was meant for me.”
Du Feng chuckled.
“Yes, getting to eat Sister-in-law’s cooking—it’s a blessing.”
Gu Jinghong glanced at him.
“You’re 26 this year?”
Du Feng nodded.
“Yeah, almost 27. Honestly, my body’s already starting to decline.”
Gu Jinghong had meant that he was at the age where he should consider finding a wife. But Du Feng wasn’t thinking about marriage—his heart was fully devoted to his work and constantly pushing his limits.
So when asked about his age, he became a little down. The body inevitably declines with age, and after 35, one is no longer suited to be a top-tier combat soldier. That’s why in recent years, he’d been training someone to take over for him.
But for someone like him, who lived to challenge the limits, the idea of retiring from training was painful. He didn’t even know what he’d do with himself afterward.
“Commander, maybe I’ll just stay in Jiangcheng to take care of you. I’ll serve you well in your later years.”
Gu Jinghong wanted to smack him on the head but couldn’t—his body no longer listened to him, and he had no strength to move his hands.
“You little punk, looking for a beating? What do you mean, ‘in my later years’? I’m planning to live another seventy years.”
Du Feng instinctively dodged backward.
That reflex made both their expressions change. The relaxed mood from a moment ago vanished in an instant.
Back in the day, the commander had a temper—if you pissed him off, you’d get kicked. Now, seeing him slumped on Du Feng’s back like this… it was hard not to feel sorrow.
“Commander, what did Professor Fu say today? Is there still hope?”
Gu Jinghong didn’t answer. He just felt powerless. He had once led troops in battle, had overcome countless challenges, and had never admitted defeat. But now, facing illness, he was helpless.
“There’s still hope.”
A female voice suddenly came from behind them.
Du Feng stopped walking and turned around to look at Su Ying.
“Sister-in-law, what did you just say?”
Su Ying walked over quickly and looked at Gu Jinghong.
“I said there’s still hope. I’ve seen your medical file. It’s possible to repair the damaged nerves through surgery. I can perform this kind of operation. But… there are risks. And it might not fully restore your original state. But if the surgery succeeds, you’ll definitely be better off than you are now—you should be able to stand and take care of yourself.”
Du Feng was still carrying Gu Jinghong, and upon hearing that, his grip tightened as he stared at Su Ying.
“Sister-in-law, are you serious? You can really help the commander walk again? Commander! Commander…”
He repeated Gu Jinghong’s name in excitement, but the latter remained silent.
Instead, he just stared at Su Ying. His eyes showed hope—but also curiosity and suspicion.
“You say you can perform that kind of surgery?”
At that moment, Su Ying was actually panicking inside. Under Gu Jinghong’s intense gaze, she instinctively looked away. She had spoken impulsively just now, after hearing his somber words—she hadn’t meant to reveal so much so quickly.
Originally, she had planned to take things step by step and not expose herself all at once. Her biggest concern was that people might not believe her—or worse, start suspecting her.
It wouldn’t take much to dig into Su Ying’s background. If someone found out that she suddenly possessed advanced medical skills, it would raise all kinds of questions—questions she couldn’t easily answer.
“Du Feng, take me back to bed.”
Gu Jinghong looked at Su Ying again and casually asked:
“What did you cook today? Smells pretty good.”
Su Ying smiled and followed after them.
“Commander, are you hungry? I rolled out some noodles and made two simple sauces—nothing fancy.”
Gu Jinghong gave her a faint smile. It was brief, fleeting, but the warmth behind it still made Su Ying happy.
He didn’t press further. He didn’t force her to explain.
And that, in itself, meant a lot.
After all, this was a matter concerning his own body. Anyone else in his shoes would be desperate, perhaps even cling to her like a drowning man to driftwood. But Gu Jinghong didn’t. When he saw her hesitate, he dropped the subject entirely.
Su Ying bit her lip. In that moment, she had an urge to tell him everything—to tell him that the soul in this body came from the future.
But she cooled down and dismissed the thought. In any case, she was going to save him. As for how she explained her medical skills—she could just make something up. Gu Jinghong probably wouldn’t pry too deeply.
Du Feng laid Gu Jinghong back onto the bed and tucked him in. Then he asked softly:
“Commander, you don’t believe Sister-in-law can perform the surgery?”
Gu Jinghong gave him a calm glance.
“It’s not that.”
“Then why? If you do believe her, then shouldn’t we get clarification and prepare for the operation? Sister-in-law just said you might be able to stand again!”
Gu Jinghong’s eyes suddenly turned cold. His voice dropped to a steely tone.
“Don’t mention this to anyone. Not even to the people in the capital.”
Du Feng didn’t understand. He didn’t know Su Ying well, but he did want the commander to get better. Even Professor Fu—one of the most respected experts—had said the condition was untreatable. If Su Ying really had a way, why wouldn’t the commander want others to know?
But no matter how desperate he was, he dared not disobey a direct order.
He straightened up and saluted.
“Yes, understood.”
Later that evening, Su Ying’s noodles were praised by Gu Jinghong. She even fed him herself, thoughtfully cutting the noodles into short pieces so he wouldn’t choke.
Then Su Ying said:
“Commander, I wanted to talk to you about something.”
Gu Jinghong swallowed his bite and looked at her.
“I won’t be coming back at noon tomorrow after work. With Du Feng here to take care of you, I feel at ease. I want to go visit my mom—I haven’t gone once since the wedding.”
Gu Jinghong looked surprised.
“The third-day home visit? I completely forgot about that…”
“You know about that custom too? So your side follows it as well?”
Gu Jinghong frowned, looking apologetic. As her husband, and ten years older than her, he should have made the arrangements. But the past few years, he’d been in a fog, completely detached from the world. Since Su Ying arrived, she had been the one doing everything.
He tilted his head slightly, moving a little closer to her.
“Sorry. I didn’t think about that.”
Su Ying smiled and continued feeding him another bite.
“No need to apologize. I’ll just go visit tomorrow—it’s not a big deal. Honestly, this whole third-day custom could’ve been skipped, but my mom lives alone out there, and I’m a bit worried. I just want to check in on her.”
