Chapter 17: Seeking Death
“Grandmother, Caiwei cousin’s oversight today harmed eldest sister-in-law. She feels guilty and is unwilling to stay in the mansion, but second sister can’t bear to part with her. I think we can compromise and send cousin to Shuilian Temple for purification, so she can pray for eldest sister-in-law for a month as compensation,” Jiang Rong suggested, seeing the Old Madam’s hesitation:
“Wouldn’t it be killing two birds with one stone to pick cousin up after a month?”
Grandmother clearly knew that Chen Caiwei was suspicious, but out of consideration for the Chen family, she only wanted to send Chen Caiwei away.
But Jiang Rong didn’t want her to go home alive.
She had to die.
Jiang Rong knew early on that these pieces of evidence could not convict Chen Caiwei. Chen Caiwei was not stupid; since she set up the situation, she would first clear herself completely.
Jiang Rong only wanted to confirm Chen Caiwei’s mistake of oversight and send her out to pray.
“This is good! Second sister-in-law is right! I agree!” Xie Ruojiao quickly expressed her support and cast a grateful look at Jiang Rong.
Old Madam Xie’s gaze fell on Jiang Rong and she nodded slightly, “Rong’er, you are kind-hearted and treat people generously. You are a good child. Caiwei, you must not fail to appreciate your cousin-in-law’s kindness to you.”
“Caiwei thanks Grandmother, thanks cousin-in-law, thanks second sister…” Chen Caiwei breathed a sigh of relief in her heart, but her face was full of gratitude:
“Cousin-in-law is willing to believe me, Caiwei is grateful from the bottom of her heart.”
Jiang Rong’s smile was innocent, her eyes slightly curved, “I was also angry just now when I saw eldest sister-in-law in trouble, which is why I was impolite to cousin. Now that the misunderstanding has been cleared, we are all one family, and harmony should be valued.”
Consort Zhao glared coldly at Chen Caiwei. If she didn’t still need her to deal with Jiang Rong, given Qiao Shi’s experience today, she would definitely have driven Chen Caiwei out!
“Come here, beat this disloyal maid to death with sticks.” Old Madam Xie coldly glanced at Xiao Tao, who was kneeling on the ground, and then said:
“Caiwei is young and can’t control people, which is why someone did such a thing behind her back. Madam Zhou, go and serve Caiwei and help her properly discipline the servants.”
A madam beside Old Madam Xie stepped forward to take the order.
“Thank you, Grandmother!” Chen Caiwei’s face was full of gratitude, but she felt somewhat stifled in her heart.
The old woman was clearly leaving someone to monitor her.
Although she believed her for the time being, she was still a little uneasy. Today’s situation was truly a case of trying to steal a chicken only to lose the bait.
She had offended Consort Zhao, aroused Grandmother’s suspicion, and had to go to a nunnery to suffer…
…
Chen Caiwei packed her luggage that day and was sent to Shuilian Temple.
The guests did not say anything on the surface, but the scandal of the Northern Prince’s eldest daughter-in-law being stripped naked in public quietly spread among the aristocratic circles.
Connecting the two incidents, some new rumors also spread.
“Miss, everyone outside is saying that Cousin Chen has been in love with the eldest young master for a long time, and out of jealousy, she poisoned eldest sister-in-law…” Yingxia said the gossip from outside.
Jiang Rong leaned halfway on the couch, smiling faintly, “That’s not bad.”
The matter of Shen Wenyuan being poisoned was kept secret by the mansion, and the guests did not know. In this storm of rumors, Jiang Rong remained untouched.
“Qiao Shi woke up and is smashing things in her room now,” Yingxia added.
Jiang Rong’s thin lips curved, “Then I have to go and persuade her, lest she think of seeking death!”
“This servant thinks Qiao Shi doesn’t have the heart to seek death?” Yingxia said in surprise.
Jiang Rong smiled slightly, “You don’t understand. My eldest sister-in-law is a young lady from a scholarly family who values her reputation the most. Today, she was in an improper state in front of everyone and must be ashamed to death. Now that her seductive appearance is circulating in the streets, how can she still have the face to live?”
