Chapter 26: Upset the Queen, Out You Go!
“Why are you taking so long to open the door?”
“You okay, Old Chen? I heard you broke up?”
“Yeah, broke up.”
Chen Yuan opened the door and ushered the crowd inside.
“That… that’s it?” Li Hua felt shocked first; Chen Yuan looked completely normal!
Chen Yuan chuckled. “Uh-huh. You guys thought I’d be falling apart, right?”
“Isn’t that obvious? We even brought food and beer!”
Luo Zichuan set the skewers and beer on the table.
“We’re here to talk sense into you, so hurry up and cry!”
“…Idiot…”
“Eh? Old Zhang, you’re eating this well all by yourself?!”
“You’re not planning a last supper, are you?”
“I’m fine…” Chen Yuan could not explain himself.
Tan Haoxin walked to the table and frowned. “Why does your place smell so good?”
“Huh? Does it? I don’t think so…”
Huang Zhisheng and Liu Yuhang exchanged a look and muttered, “Crap, the shock was too much…”
“This isn’t poison gas, is it, Old Chen? Trying to suffocate yourself?”
“Uh…”
“Come on, Old Chen, we’re not leaving tonight. We’ll drink till dawn!”
“Seriously, your imagination is wild… I’m really fine!”
“It’s okay, we know you’re fine. Keep Director Tan company—he almost flunked a class, so he’s celebrating!”
“Yeah, yeah! Drink with me! Why drink alone?” Tan Haoxin cooperated eagerly.
Either way, once he drank, Chen Yuan’s real feelings would come out. The brothers had come precisely to make him cry his heart out.
“But… Wang Changling, damn it…” Chen Yuan felt helpless while two of them hooked his arms. Should he just put on an act and bawl?
Li Hua, ever sharp, glanced at the shoe rack and spotted a pair of white women’s high-top sneakers!
Moving like Sherlock Holmes, he crept to the bathroom door, nudged it, then yanked it open.
Nobody.
Yet brand-new toiletries lined the sink!
Old Chen lived alone, and his things were in the master bath—why were there toiletries here? Had he already lived with Yu Enqi? No—he had never said a word…
“Hua, what are you doing? Come eat!”
Luo Zichuan had opened a beer for Chen Yuan, and the two were already chugging.
“Oh, coming.”
Li Hua was interrupted; he had wanted to peek into the bedroom. Why was that door shut so tight in broad daylight?
They gathered round the table to eat and drink, while Chen Yuan kept glancing toward the kitchen. What was the lass doing…?
“Come on, Old Chen, chug!”
“Quit showing off. Drink less—we’ve got freshman orientation tomorrow…”
Chen Yuan felt these idiots had only come to drink at his place.
“Forget it, pour it into cups; bottles bloat your stomach.”
Huang Zhisheng went to the double-door fridge for paper cups.
He took out the cups, turned—and someone darted from the kitchen!
The cups hit the floor… and he stood frozen…
A silver-haired beauty stepped out carrying steaming meat soup and a huge bowl of egg-fried rice.
The boys trying to pour liquor into Chen Yuan looked as if a time-stop skill had frozen them, hands in mid-air.
Clovie had merely gone to ladle more soup and rice…
Chen Yuan, of course, could not keep his buddies from seeing her. When he opened the door earlier, she happened to slip into the kitchen, so they had noticed nothing. Now the reaction finally fit…
A bunch of morons.
The time-stop spell ended as Clovie walked over with the soup. Huang Zhisheng picked up the cups and stared at her along with everyone else.
“Tsk! Where are you looking!”
Chen Yuan’s click of the tongue snapped them out of it; they turned to him, shocked and confused, feeling betrayed. They had come to console him, and he was hiding a beauty?
“What’s going on, Old Chen?! And she is?!”
“Uh… my little sister…” Chen Yuan blurted. It was the only excuse that might work.
Clovie’s hand trembled; she shot him a quietly resentful look.
“Bro!”
Tan Haoxin changed sides instantly. “From now on, you call me Dad, I call you Bro!”
“Your mom!” Chen Yuan shot back.
“You know, Old Chen, I’ve never suffered love’s hardships…” Luo Zichuan started earnestly.
“Get lost!”
“How could she be your sister? You’ve got black hair. No wonder you took the breakup so well,” Huang Zhisheng laughed.
“Sorry to intrude, Old Chen. If we’d known, we wouldn’t have worried for nothing,” Liu Yuhang added, still stealing glances at Clovie.
“A sensible man would help the girl carry things; you’re all just staring!”
Li Hua took the soup and rice from Clovie, set the soup in the middle, and handed the heaping rice bowl to Chen Yuan. “With an appetite like this, you’re clearly fine. Then your dad can rest easy.”
That—that was mine… Clovie muttered inwardly.
Li Hua simply assumed the mountain of fried rice was Chen Yuan’s.
“Is it wrong to eat a lot?!” Chen Yuan protested.
“We worried for nothing!”
“Then… we’ll head out.”
Huang Zhisheng decided; they had come out of concern, but now the couple needed privacy. Their questions could wait.
“Right, we’ll leave. Worried about you for nothing.”
Chen Yuan laughed and cursed. “Thanks for worrying—now get out!”
“You ungrateful brat, I—”
Before the sentence finished, Chen Yuan kicked him out the door.
Outside, they muttered among themselves. Chen Yuan promised to treat them later; today really wasn’t convenient.
Clovie had never been good at socializing; she had been like that since childhood. From another angle, if several of her girlfriends barged in while she was alone with Chen Yuan, she would feel awkward too. He would make it up to his bros with late-night snacks later.
When they left, each said goodbye in an old-father tone.
“We’re off, kid… take it easy.”
“Take it easy.”
“Easy.”
“Easy.”
“Easy.”
“Your mom!”
