Chapter 5: Past Life
Nix Kingdom.
Capital Freldreich.
Golden candlelight flickered, and the once lively great hall instantly fell silent when a soldier stepped inside.
Outside the palace, people crouched and hid without daring to make a sound, while a disciplined, oppressive army lined the center of the road; the torches in their hands lit the normally dim streets.
They seemed to wait for something outside the palace; the moment an order came, they would begin the slaughter.
Residents shut their doors and windows and trembled inside their homes.
Clouds covered the sky, and distant caws of crows set everyone on edge, yet the scene appeared strangely quiet.
The former splendor of the royal capital vanished at that moment.
“As expected, the Regent rebels after all…”
“This day really came after all…”
“Report, Grand Marshal, all units are already assembled outside the palace and can charge in at any time!”
“Hmph, very good. Regent, our great cause finishes today.”
Grand Marshal Fillers stood, spread his arms, and looked at the man beside the throne; his bloodshot eyes looked almost insane.
When they heard these words, the many ministers present felt as if they could not breathe and looked in terror toward the person on the throne.
That person was their only hope, Her Majesty Queen Clovie Vessild.
Yet when they saw that the queen also wore a shocked expression, their hearts sank as well.
At that moment, the Regent Leonhard Arl Asa stepped out from beside the queen, gave two dark chuckles, and addressed the ministers below, “The order of Nix Kingdom has collapsed beyond salvation. Now… a new order must be built…”
“You gentlemen, are you willing to join me and the Grand Marshal in establishing this new order?”
“Nonsense, Leonhard! The queen trusts you and grants you supreme authority, yet you rebel on such an important day?!”
Minister of the Interior Isis was the first to step forward and shouted at the Regent while pointing at him.
That day marked the first day of the New Codex’s enforcement; everyone celebrated a brand-new day for Nix Kingdom, yet such a calamity suddenly occurred.
The codex was written personally by the Regent.
And that day he intended to become the true king of all Nix Kingdom.
While Isis still roared in anger, Grand Marshal Fillers already drew his longsword and slowly walked toward Isis’s back.
“Anyone who refuses obedience today will die!”
In the next second, Fillers flashed to Isis’s front and drove his sword through her chest.
Blood spurted out immediately, and a large pool stained the floor.
The ministers cried out at the sight and felt even more panicked.
Among those present, no one except the queen and the Regent could be a match for Grand Marshal Fillers.
“Anyone who disobeys today faces only one end!” Fillers said in a low voice.
Instantly some ministers set an example; they belonged to factions that the Regent recruited long ago and would have followed him even without this scene.
Those with weaker resolve likewise chose obedience and willingly acknowledged the Regent as the new king.
After all, they reached their current positions with difficulty and did not want to die.
Seeing this, Fillers raised a smile and looked toward the Regent.
The Regent continued, “The enforcement of the New Codex marks the day of my coronation; this will be an epic moment.”
“If a woman who understands nothing can sit upon the throne, why can’t I? Everything she has, I taught her!”
Regent Leonhard’s voice almost turned into a roar, and his eyes filled with hunger for power.
Queen Clovie remained seated on the throne and kept silent, merely watching him—her most respected teacher who turned into such a figure for the sake of power.
Her eyes already turned red; she still remembered how, when the teacher first met her, he gently told her, “You will become an excellent queen.”
Now…
She could only watch her beloved teacher turn into this mad figure.
If you foresaw this, teacher, why did you help me ascend the throne…
Teacher, if you wanted this seat, I would give it to you; I could have withdrawn from the royal selection…
Why did you teach me so much back then…
Now… I am already the queen, teacher…
I no longer want to be queen… I want to go back… I want to return to being your student…
I really miss… the days when you gently rubbed my hair and praised my cleverness…
Those days were clearly enough…
She kept her eyes on the Regent as he proclaimed to the gathered ministers, and many ministers already chose their sides.
At that moment, the vast majority of ministers already stood with Grand Marshal Fillers; only a very few, willing to die, lowered their heads and wept in their seats.
“Excellent!” Regent Leonhard waved his hand broadly, and Fillers understood.
In the next second, the opposing ministers all collapsed to the ground, blood splattering on the spot.
The ministers behind him let out a long sigh, as if they felt grateful for choosing the right side.
When Clovie saw this scene, she realized that the few ministers who stood with her also died.
She clenched her fists and sobbed uncontrollably.
Because of her hesitation…
Because she still held hope…
Hope for her teacher…
Tears streamed down her cheeks, and at last she made her decision.
No one else could die because of the teacher, because of her.
I am the queen of Nix Kingdom; I am the teacher’s proud student.
Teacher… I must stop you…
In an instant, her Crystal Ice Scepter appeared out of thin air, displaying the royal family’s formidable power over ice and snow.
At the same time, the Knight King Enado outside the palace was already ready; after sensing that power, he knew the situation reached the point of no return.
“Everyone, kill!!”
“Kill!!!”
“Kill!!!”
Roars echoed from outside the palace, and the flames of war seemed to light up the night sky instantly; even inside the palace they could feel the brutality of the battle outside.
The ministers felt shocked at the sight; how could this coup even ignite a war?!
Regent Leonhard tilted his head slightly, a trace of mockery on his lips. “It looks like you are not stupid after all.”
“You taught me well…”
Grand Marshal Fillers glared at the queen; that scepter symbolizing authority possessed formidable power, and he needed to deal with her together with the Regent.
At that moment, Knight Enado rushed into the palace at an inopportune time.
Enado: “Your Majesty!!”
Regent looked at Fillers: “It’s fine, you just deal with Enado!”
Fillers: “Then be careful, Regent; Her Majesty is not easy to handle…”
After speaking, Fillers drew his sword and charged toward Knight King Enado.
…
In an instant, the battle inside the palace erupted as well.
The hiding ministers only dared to shrink toward the corners of the hall; the outside lay in flames, and they did not dare to leave.
Now they could only hope that the victor would be the Regent.
Clovie: “Teacher… you are already lost in the fantasy of power… unable to free yourself…”
She raised her scepter and pointed it at the man in front of her, whose red eyes looked almost deranged…
