Chapter 9: Teacher Brings You Home

“I don’t… don’t leave me… all alone…”

Isis also wept before the throne; it was the first time he saw the lofty queen cry.

What moved him even more was the Regent.

Everything was a scheme laid by the Regent, a trap fashioned with his own life.

They once asked him why he staked such a noble life on the plan.

He said that if it was not him, the factions harboring treason would never choose to defect.

The Regent truly paved the queen’s road with his entire life.

When they heard the commotion, Fillers and Enado walked in and turned their faces away, unable to bear the sight.

“The entire faction loyal to the Regent is wiped out,” Fillers reported.

“All strongholds of rebel leaders in the capital are cleared as well,” Enado added. “Every blade pointed at His Highness the Regent.”

Clovie said, “So even the talk of butchering the citizens was something Teacher said just to enrage me…”

“The screams I heard… were actions you carried out…”

“You wanted me to kill him with my own hands…”

Isis replied, “Only when you personally kill the chief culprit will every subject of Nix Kingdom rally more firmly around you.”

“The people need that ceremony.”

Just like a dragonslayer who must slay the evil dragon before the crowd to be hailed as a hero.

“Teacher…”

Isis continued, “Your Majesty, I know you are grief-stricken, but now is not the time to weep. The urgent matter is to proclaim to the entire realm that you personally executed the mastermind of this large-scale rebellion, Regent Leonhard.”

“You want me to brand my teacher—a man who devoted his whole life to me—as a criminal in the end?”

“But… if you do not, everything His Highness did is wasted…”

“……”

“I cannot let Teacher’s efforts fail… Go and do it.”

“Yes, Your Majesty.”

“Teacher… I don’t want to be the queen anymore…”

“I miss you so much…”

“Can you come back…”

Clovie curled up in an alley and shivered. Even though the night was hot, her body felt icy cold.

She dreamed, murmured, and yearned.

Countless days and nights passed.

“Dressed so nicely, yet sleeping out here? Boss?” one middle-aged man asked.

“Tsk, look how clean she is; how could she be a tramp?” another said.

“Think there’s any trouble, Boss?” a third asked.

Several lecherous middle-aged men gathered at the mouth of the alley.

“Shut up and let me think,” the leader muttered while rubbing his chin.

At last he made up his mind. “Hell, we’re already kidnapping someone, what are we afraid of?”

“A lone woman in a dead-end alley—how could she slip through the hands of several grown men?”

“Boss is right, screw it!”

They left one man on watch and the rest charged into the alley.

Chen Yuan ran at full speed.

Damn it, please let nobody die.

He reached the alley and turned a corner.

A man dashed past him, shouting, “Ghost!”

“Huh?”

An ice crystal skimmed Chen Yuan’s cheek and struck the fleeing man, knocking him out on the spot.

That confirmed it for Chen Yuan.

No doubt about it—it was Clovie.

He walked toward the alley.

Two more bodies lay motionless at the entrance.

Not dead, right?

Worried, he looked farther inside and saw the snow-white girl who seemed to step out of a land of ice.

She sat on the ground, panting, and looked badly hurt.

Chen Yuan hurried forward, but before he took a few steps, another ice shard flew at him.

He reacted at once. Because he already knew her methods and understood her, he dodged the instant he saw her raise her hand.

“Clovie!” he called. If she shot again he might not avoid it.

Hearing the familiar voice calling her name, Clovie’s mind went blank, and a ringing filled her ears.

With the last trace of consciousness she looked toward the sound.

Because her mana was gone, she failed to sense anyone approaching while she slept, so when she awoke the men were already upon her.

It cost her the last of her energy to knock them down. Add to that several days without food in a world where she possessed not a single coin, and she was desperately weak after using magic.

Even so, though she lacked the strength to stand, she still braced herself against the wall and limped toward Chen Yuan.

By the faint light that seeped in from the alley mouth, she finally saw him clearly.

The man she thought of day and night.

“Te… Teacher…”

Years of bottled-up grievance burst forth. Her nose stung and tears welled in her beautiful eyes.

When Chen Yuan drew near he noticed the “bed” made of scraps of cardboard beside her.

The sacred, noble queen came to his world only to sleep in a place like this.

His heart felt as if someone seized it.

It hurt so much.

It was as if someone hurled a brick into his eyes.

He answered softly, “Teacher is here.”

On hearing the assurance, Clovie sniffed and wiped at her tears.

She did not want to look so wretched now that she finally met him again.

Yet the more she wiped, the more tears fell. They would not stop, as though she had to let every grievance of the years pour out at once. She broke down, sobbing like a child.

“Teacher…”

She tried to throw herself into Chen Yuan’s arms.

But she had no strength. After one step she lost her balance and toppled.

Then she felt a warm embrace.

It was the first warmth she felt in years.

At last she could stop being frightened.

Chen Yuan reacted swiftly; the moment she pitched forward he reached out and caught her.

Her body was so cold.

She was chilled through. It seemed her bloodline stayed the same in this world—every time she used magic she became like this.

He squeezed her delicate hand and realized she slipped into unconsciousness.

Too weak…

Looking at the girl as pale as snow who became like this because of him, Chen Yuan felt a piercing ache.

He stroked her silky hair and whispered, “Come, Teacher will take you home.”
