Chapter 6: Behave Yourself
While Chen Feng got scolded by his mother at home, Zhao Lun, who was sent to the station last night, looked pitifully at Brother Qiang.
Brother Qiang glared at him, a savage hint of ruthlessness in his smile.
What an idiot!
He actually told the police that it was him who ordered the capture of the baby panda. Damn, how could he say something like that to the police?
“Brother Qiang, I really count on you to get me out of here.”
“When I get out, I will definitely handle this matter for you.”
He Qiang’s face turned pale, and he quickly spoke to the police officer beside him, “I’m innocent, I don’t know this man at all.”
“This guy must have something wrong in his head. I, He Qiang, never do anything illegal.”
But in his heart, he hated Zhao Lun so much that he wished he could kill him. This fool was completely unreliable. Before, he thought this guy knew the habits of wild animals in the mountains and could easily get the goods, but he never expected to get dragged into this mess.
Not only that, but he even got summoned by the police to assist in their investigation.
Luckily, Zhao Lun failed and there was no concrete evidence, otherwise, if mud fell into your pants, even if it wasn’t shit, it looked like it.
After being lectured inside for two hours, He Qiang came out dripping with sweat, then spat bitterly in the corner, “Useless piece of trash.”
“Even when given an opportunity, he couldn’t get a baby panda.”
He opened the door of his Landwind, and a wave of scorching hot air surged out. He hurried to switch on the air conditioning, then squatted under a tree next to the police station, waiting for the temperature in the car to come down.
He wiped sweat off his forehead and replayed Zhao Lun’s grumbling words in his mind. That baby panda was indeed near the stream by the courtyard in Qingquan Village, and was only discovered by the people inside when they tried to catch it.
Otherwise, it might have worked out.
Those people in that yard really meddled in other people’s business!
So he took out his phone and started calling the buddies he usually hung out with, planning to teach those meddling people a lesson.
He wanted to make them behave.
At eleven thirty in the morning, He Qiang and a few of his friends who drove SUVs met under the gatehouse of Yinjian Town. After eating and drinking their fill at a small restaurant, they headed straight for Qingquan Village.
By this time, Chen Feng already sat Linglong in her highchair, put a bib around her neck, and began the “clean plate” campaign.
He devoured tomato scrambled eggs, paired with his mother’s homemade pickles, mixed with fragrant long-grain rice. This delicious rice bowl made him eat ravenously.
In just a few bites, he finished and gulped down a cup of green tea, letting out a long sigh, “So damn satisfying.”
Yi Qinghua saw his behavior and knocked him on the head with her chopsticks, “Can you pay attention to your manners? Is this the first meal you ever ate in eight lifetimes?”
“You see the little girl imitating you, eating so quickly. Is she afraid the food will be snatched?”
Chen Feng grinned, “If you don’t eat fast, it really might get snatched up. Linglong, what are you staring at?”
“If you’re not hungry, Daddy will help you with that.”
The little girl hurriedly protected her lunch; she was savoring tender chicken fillet and jade-like thin slices of cucumber.
She stuffed a strip of chicken fillet into her mouth, puffing out her cheeks like a greedy hamster, making both her grandparents burst into laughter.
Yi Qinghua laughed and patted her son, “You’re such a grown man, still bullying the little girl.”
Chen Feng also chuckled softly. He picked out some vegetables and fruits for Little Silly and placed them in a small dish. The baby panda ran over cheerfully and ate happily.
Since following the father and daughter into the yard, Little Silly already refused to leave.
Free food and board, much more comfortable than struggling outside.
After Linglong finished her lunch, she wiped her mouth, stretched out her arms, and called for her father with a milky, childish voice, “Papa!”
Chen Feng gently lifted her from the highchair and set her on the ground.
The little one giggled, ran up to Little Silly, and originally wanted to squat down and pet him, but her legs suddenly gave out and she dropped to her knees, hands hitting the ground as her face went straight into Little Silly’s food bowl.
Little Silly looked at Linglong in disbelief and whimpered in sorrow.
The little baby actually snatched its food!
Who wasn’t a baby here?
It pawed at Chen Feng’s pants, staring at Little Linglong, a tiny paw pointing at its food bowl, feeling utterly wronged.
The little girl, still lying over the food bowl, finally managed to lift her head. She knelt there, a little confused, pulled off the apple slice stuck to her cheek, stuffed it straight into her mouth, crunching away and giggling, “Delicious!”
The corners of Chen Feng’s mouth curled up. His father and mother were both bent over, laughing.
With a ping, his phone chimed. He took it out to find a message from a soldier in the guard regiment—it was a high-definition, full 360-degree video of the little girl’s head buried in the food bowl just moments earlier.
Chen Feng held his forehead, staring at the giggling Linglong who handed the food bowl back to Little Silly, and sighed quietly. This little one’s black history could never be hidden.
He simply posted it on his Moments, letting all the big shots of the world see his daughter’s daily life.
He even gave it a title: “Linglong’s Little Mishap.”
In less than two seconds, comments flooded in: “Looks more like a big mishap to me!”
“Handsome Feng, send me the little baby, she’ll be safe here!”
“My God, how is she this cute? Heaven, my heart is melting!”
“Hahaha, the legendary super dad raising a child—there’s nothing you can’t imagine, but nothing he can’t do.”
“As the daughter of the War God, I can only say, poor little one~”
Chen Feng took a deep breath, silently muted his phone, and slipped it into his pocket.
If he couldn’t see those guys’ comments, he wouldn’t get annoyed!
“Sweetie, let’s go for a walk.” Chen Feng took Little Linglong by the hand and walked toward the courtyard gate. To the little girl, the door’s threshold seemed extra tall.
He stepped over first and stood there, watching Little Linglong struggle for a while before climbing over, then gave her a bright thumbs-up with a smile, “You’re so brave, honey!”
His mother commented with a chilly voice, “When she grows up, I’m afraid she’ll climb right over the courtyard wall!”
Little Linglong clapped her hands, delighted as she held her father’s hand, lifting her head and kicking up her tiny legs energetically. The little one’s adorable appearance filled Chen Feng’s eyes with tenderness.
Just then, three SUVs approached and stopped by the bamboo grove near the courtyard.
Five men got out, all around forty years old. One tall, crew-cut man had a brown donkey-leather bag tucked under his armpit, a thick gold chain on his chest, and walked with a strange lurch as if he suffered from polio.
He first pulled out a Huazi cigarette from his pocket, lit it, took a fierce drag, and exhaled a cloud of bluish smoke. He squinted at Chen Feng with a swagger, asking, “Let me ask you something, are you the ones living here?”
He Qiang and a few others acted like they were looking for trouble, moving closer to the gate.
Chen Feng raised his eyebrows, picked Linglong up in his arms, a half-smile on his face.
“So what? Can’t I live here?” He sounded like a complete rascal, utterly dismissive.
The little baby in his arms fanned her hands about and shouted angrily, “Stinky~”
He Qiang, decked out like an upstanding man, wore a dark blue Polo shirt, a designer belt at his waist, black ice silk slacks, crocodile leather shoes, and his eyes flashed venomously as he spoke, “So you’re the brat who meddled and got Zhao Lun sent away?”
Chen Feng suddenly laughed, “You’re the ‘Brother Qiang’ Zhao Lun talked about? The one who runs a big restaurant in town?”
“You stormed all the way out here just to ask about that?”
“Fine, I admit it.”
For a moment, He Qiang and the other thugs looked stunned. According to the usual script, the other guy shouldn’t admit it.
They all felt a bit lost on what to do next.
The tall man noticed the little girl in Chen Feng’s arms and acted especially annoyed by the smoke he blew at her. The little one kept fanning with her hands and even inhaled on purpose, then blew smoke right at Little Linglong.
Chen Feng’s gaze grew cold. In the next second, the guard regiment’s warriors appeared—at least two meters tall, like humanoid bears. One palm landed on the tall man’s face, sending him to his knees. When his head buzzed in confusion, the unfinished cigarette was stuffed forcefully into his mouth.
“What is this thing, daring to show off in front of our chief?” Nangong Xian growled deeply, “Kneel down, now.”
Then he gave another slap, making the man’s face swell, blooming purple and red.
“If you love smoking, I’ll satisfy you!”
He Qiang and the others were so scared they nearly wet themselves. At least a squad of soldiers, each armed with the country’s most advanced combat weapons, stared at them with icy, indifferent eyes.
Yi Qinghua and Chen Dachang, hearing the commotion, ran out of the house in a panic. When they saw the lineup, they were dumbfounded.
“What happened?” Yi Qinghua anxiously grabbed her son’s arm.
Chen Feng smiled, patted his mother’s hand, nodded calmly to his father, and reassured them, “These are my guards.”
“I’m a retired veteran, after all, and the country’s afraid some ignorant folks might cause trouble. They sent these warriors to handle these matters.”
“With these guys making such a scene, looks like they’re not ordinary folk.”
“Go and interrogate them for me!”
Nangong Xian saluted Chen Feng, grabbed the tall man by the head, and dragged him toward the road. The sharp pain from his scalp made the man scream like a slaughtered pig.
A military SUV drove up, and He Qiang and his companions were stuffed inside and swiftly taken away by the soldiers.
The guards melted back into the bamboo grove as if they had never appeared.
Women passing by on the way to play mahjong at the village house also witnessed this scene at the gate, and all sorts of gossip about Chen Feng started to swirl, spreading further and wider.
Of course, what the villagers most firmly believed was that these guards were bodyguards hired by Linglong’s rich mother.
As for the men, seeing Chen Feng, who left the village for over a decade, they could only envy him so much their eyes shone. Some even dreamed that one day a young, beautiful, rich woman would take a fancy to them.
That would be the way to reach the pinnacle of life!
