Chapter 10: After the Separation, Good Luck Came
Lu Xiaoyue nodded in agreement, “Yes, yes, we can’t give her anything.”
“But, mother, why did you buy so much pork at once?”
“I’m making cured meat to sell to the restaurants.”
“No one in the village makes cured meat to sell to the restaurants, are you sure you want to make cured meat to sell to the restaurants?”
Shen Xuezhul smiled and replied, “Yes, I’m sure. Once I make the cured meat for you to eat, you’ll understand.”
Lu Xiaoyue couldn’t believe that Shen Xuezhul could make delicious cured meat, as she had never done it before, and no one had taught her how to do it.
To avoid making Shen Xuezhul think too much, she said, “I’m looking forward to the cured meat you’ll make. I’m sure it will be delicious.”
Shen Xiaoli trusted Shen Xuezhul, “That’s for sure.”
Encouraged by her two daughters, Shen Xuezhul grew more confident. “I’ll make the cured meat tonight, and you’ll see.”
“The house needs cleaning, and there are some things to tidy up. After we finish these, I’ll cook for you.”
“Tonight, we’re having a great dish.”
Lu Xiaoli could only think of meat as a great dish, “Mother, are you going to make spicy stir-fried meat?”
Shen Xuezhul shook her head, “No, it’s spicy stir-fried pig intestines.”
“But pig intestines are something most people don’t eat. They look dirty,” Lu Xiaoli didn’t like eating them.
“It’ll be fine once they’re cleaned. Just wait and see. You’ll understand when you eat it tonight.”
Lu Xiaoli still wanted spicy stir-fried meat, “Mother, could you make some stir-fried meat? I haven’t had meat for half a year.”
Back when they were at the Lu family’s house, it was hard to even cook some canned meat. Song Guimiao only allowed her two sons from the second household to eat it.
If Lu Xiaoyue and Lu Xiaoli were too greedy for meat and secretly took a piece, she would slap them in the face.
She would scold them, “You two are useless. Why eat meat? If I give it to you, it’s a waste. You’re going to be someone else’s people soon enough.”
Shen Xuezhul could tell that Lu Xiaoli really wanted to eat meat, “Even if you don’t say it, I’ll still make some spicy stir-fried meat for you tonight.”
When Lu Xiaoli heard there would be meat tonight, she was overjoyed, “That’s great! We get to eat meat!”
“By the way, mother, I just remembered that the three chickens haven’t eaten anything for so long. I need to go feed them.”
Shen Xuezhul nodded, “Go ahead. I’m going to clean the rooms.”
Lu Xiaoyue said, “Mother, I’ll help you.”
Shen Xuezhul was fine cleaning three rooms by herself, “No need. You and Xiaoli can go feed the chickens.”
…
There was no grain at home, only coarse rice given by Song Guimiao. To avoid the chickens going hungry, Lu Xiaoli grabbed a handful of coarse rice to feed them.
One of the hens saw the coarse rice in Lu Xiaoli’s hand and clucked at her.
“Are you starving?” Lu Xiaoli threw the coarse rice into the chicken coop.
The three chickens rushed over, fighting to grab the rice.
Lu Xiaoyue thought she should give them some water, as they hadn’t drunk water in a while.
She greeted Lu Xiaoli and left.
Lu Xiaoli’s hands were small, so she didn’t grab much rice for the chickens. Soon, the rice in the coop was eaten up like a storm.
Just as she was about to grab more rice, she noticed something was wrong with one of the hens.
Soon, an egg came out from behind this hen.
