“If you let me take the meat now, I won’t say anything more to you.”
Tian Zhixiang chimed in, “If you don’t give us the wild boar meat now, I’ll go outside and tell everyone. Let’s see what they say about you!”
Shen Xuezhu was indifferent. “You two can go outside and say whatever you want. But that wild boar meat can’t be taken.”
At that moment, Lu Xiaoli came out of the chicken coop holding a basin of eggs. She didn’t notice Song Guimiao and Tian Zhixiang.
“Mom, look! Those two hens laid a whole basin of eggs today!”
Song Guimiao and her daughter-in-law immediately came over upon hearing this. They glanced at the wooden basin in Lu Xiaoli’s hands.
The basin was filled to the brim with eggs.
Song Guimiao ran to the chicken coop to take a quick look and then said, “These eggs came from the two hens I gave you.”
“Xiaoshan’s daughter-in-law, what did you feed the chickens? Why are they laying so many eggs in a day?”
Shen Xuezhu replied, “I just fed them brown rice.”
“That doesn’t make sense. These two hens are a bit strange. But I won’t ask for too much. As long as there are eggs to eat, that’s enough.”
“These eggs in this wooden basin are mine now. If I hadn’t given you those two hens, you wouldn’t have so many eggs.”
Song Guimiao handed the piece of wild boar meat in her hand to Tian Zhixiang, then tried to snatch the wooden basin of eggs from Lu Xiaoli.
Shen Xuezhu was quicker than her and got the basin of eggs first.
“These two hens never laid so many eggs before. It’s only after we separated that they started laying this many.”
“Since the chickens are mine, whether or not I give you eggs is my business!”
Seeing she couldn’t take the eggs, Song Guimiao decided to let it go for now. She only needed to take the wild boar meat.
“You’re not giving me the eggs, but you have to give me the wild boar meat, right?”
“Everyone else in the village has received wild boar meat, and only you haven’t given me any. Mom, think about it—why do you think I didn’t give you any wild boar meat?”
Song Guimiao didn’t care why Shen Xuezhu wouldn’t give her the wild boar meat. She grabbed the piece of wild boar meat from Tian Zhixiang’s hand and started walking away.
Shen Xuezhu immediately went to close the yard gate.
Song Guimiao sat on the ground and started throwing a tantrum.
“I’ve really raised an ungrateful white-eyed wolf! It’s one thing if she didn’t bring me any, but now that I come and ask her for it, she still refuses to give it! How heartless!”
Shen Xuezhu, now somewhat angry, retorted, “You’re the heartless one! When I was working myself to death at the Lu family, did you come to help me?”
“When I was so tired I couldn’t even get up in the mornings, you would just scold me. You could sleep soundly in bed and not get up, saying I was lazy!”
“It wasn’t enough for you to scold me—you’d come out and hit me with a bamboo stick. You beat me so badly that my hands hurt even when I was working.”
“And now that I have something, you come and ask for it. Well, let me tell you, I won’t give it to you.”
Song Guimiao remained sitting on the ground and refused to get up. “Did I scold or hit you after we separated?”
“The last time you came to my house, you called me a white-eyed wolf, and now you’re calling me one again. You still say you never scolded me.”
Song Guimiao tried to argue, “But I didn’t scold you like before.”
“Scolding is scolding. Don’t talk about what happened before and now.”
