The crowd around them also grew eager to buy eggs.
“I’ll take one pound!”
“I want two pounds!”
“Give me four pounds of eggs!”
Shen Xuezhu smiled as she responded to each customer.
In less than two hours, her entire basket of eggs was sold out.
She didn’t count the money in the market, but she had a rough idea. She had made a nice profit from selling the eggs.
She placed the scale back into the basket and slung it over her shoulder. “Xiaoyue, didn’t you want pastries? Let’s go buy them now.”
Lu Xiaoyue was impressed by Shen Xuezhu’s memory. “Mom, you didn’t even need me to remind you, and you already thought about buying me pastries. You’re the best!”
Shen Xuezhu smiled, “Of course I remember what you say. You’re both my precious daughters.”
Lu Xiaoyue and Lu Xiaoli heard the phrase “precious daughters” for the first time.
“What does ‘precious’ mean?”
“What does ‘precious daughters’ mean?”
Shen Xuezhu laughed and explained, “Precious means very valuable, more valuable than gold or jade.”
“You two are my very, very precious daughters.”
After hearing this, both Lu Xiaoyue and Lu Xiaoli rushed to Shen Xuezhu and hugged her.
Shen Xuezhu felt warmth in her heart.
…
When they arrived at the pastry shop, Lu Xiaoyue was particularly fond of the red date cakes.
Lu Xiaoli wanted green bean cakes.
Shen Xuezhu bought one pound of each type of pastry.
Now that she had money, she wanted her daughters to enjoy the pastries to their heart’s content.
She knew they wouldn’t finish the two pounds of pastries all at once—they would enjoy them for several days.
The red date cakes cost ten wen per pound, and the green bean cakes were eight wen per pound.
Shen Xuezhu took out eighteen wen and handed it to the shopkeeper.
When Lu Xiaoyue saw her mother paying, she said, “I want to carry the pastries.”
Shen Xuezhu handed her the pastries.
Lu Xiaoyue carried the pastries to the door, then opened the wrapping paper for the red date cake.
She took out three pieces of the red date cake.
She first handed one piece to Shen Xuezhu, “Mom, you should try some.”
Shen Xuezhu took the piece of red date cake from her hand. “I’ll just have one piece.”
Her heart warmed again. Lu Xiaoyue was so considerate—whenever there was something good to eat, she always thought of sharing it with her.
Lu Xiaoyue then asked Lu Xiaoli, “Xiaoli, do you want some red date cake?”
Lu Xiaoli looked at the red date cake and thought it looked good. “Sister, I’ll have a piece too.”
Lu Xiaoyue gave Lu Xiaoli a piece of the red date cake.
Lu Xiaoli took it and sniffed, “It smells so good!”
When Lu Xiaoyue heard this, she couldn’t wait to try the cake herself.
She took a piece and ate it.
The red date cake melted quickly in her mouth, releasing a fragrant, rich flavor with a smooth, soft texture and just the right amount of sweetness.
Lu Xiaoyue couldn’t help but say, “This red date cake is so delicious!”
Shen Xuezhu smiled as she saw the satisfied expression on Lu Xiaoyue’s face. She felt happy inside. This red date cake was a rare treat for them.
If she hadn’t traveled to this world, who knew where Lu Xiaoyue might have ended up by now. It wasn’t like she could have just asked for a red date cake anytime she wanted.
Now that she had come to this world, Shen Xuezhu wanted to take care of her daughters the best she could.
Without realizing it, she had already started thinking of them as her own children.
