Chapter 23 – Grandpa and Grandma Were Reborn Too!
“We were at the state-run restaurant for our matchmaking, and I saw a woman comrade standing outside the window. I caught a glimpse of her from the corner of my eye, and the moment she noticed, she turned and ran. Could that have been Tao Jingjing?”
“Too bad I didn’t get a good look at her face,” Ning Zhiyuan said regretfully.
Sang Feiyu quickly described Tao Jingjing’s build with hand gestures, and Ning Zhiyuan nodded heavily. “She really matches your description.”
“Could she be the one who sent someone to follow me?” Sang Feiyu asked, confused.
Zhao Hui’s heart instantly tensed. “Feiyu, you’d better head to the army base sooner.”
“Otherwise, I’ll be constantly worried whenever you go out.”
“I’ll head to the train station now and try to get tickets for tomorrow,” Ning Zhiyuan said.
Sang Feiyu asked, “What about you and Grandpa?”
“We’ll buy tickets back to Shanghai after seeing you off on the train,” Zhao Hui replied.
She couldn’t rest easy unless she personally saw her granddaughter safely off.
“Okay. You two have more connections in Shanghai anyway, so I’ll feel better knowing you’re there.”
Ning Zhiyuan returned from the train station saying only night tickets were available for tomorrow. He paid extra and managed to get two sleeper tickets.
Meanwhile, Sang Feiyu and her grandmother began preparing supplies for her trip to the army base.
Zhao Hui bought a pair of new red mandarin-duck-patterned cotton quilts and other items in festive colors.
Seeing all the items, Sang Feiyu shook her head. “Grandma, don’t buy too much. We won’t be able to carry it all.”
“It’s fine. I’ll wire more later,” Zhao Hui insisted.
“And what kind of family doesn’t prepare things when their daughter’s getting married?”
She said it loudly enough that others nearby who had been judging them for buying too much immediately understood.
There were plenty of wealthy families in Guangzhou—some even prepared more than this when marrying off daughters. Suddenly, Zhao Hui’s shopping didn’t seem excessive at all.
“Ceramic cups, towels, toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, cotton cloth…”
Zhao Hui murmured through the list, then turned around and bought two packs of batteries and a flashlight.
“These will definitely come in handy later.
Military bases are usually far from city centers, so you need to be mentally prepared.”
These parting words were deeply touching. Sang Feiyu’s nose stung with emotion as she clutched her grandmother’s hand. “Grandma, you treat me the best.”
Zhao Hui smiled. “You’re my only grandchild. If I don’t treat you well, who will?”
“Grandma, once I settle in at the base, you and Grandpa must come visit me.”
She didn’t want her grandparents to suffer the harsh conditions of base life, but she hoped they could at least stay for a few days.
“Of course. Your grandpa and I will definitely come visit.”
As they returned loaded with goods, Ning Zhiyuan suddenly appeared and took everything from their hands.
Sang Feiyu felt her arms instantly free and praised, “You came just in time—thank you!”
Zhao Hui beamed. “Now that Zhiyuan is taking care of Feiyu, I’m much more at ease.”
When they got back to the guesthouse, Sang Youde had already packed up dinner for them. “The state-run restaurant had fresh meat wontons today. I bought a serving for each of you.”
“I even got half a roast goose.”
He swallowed hard after saying that.
Every time he visited Guangzhou, he had to have roast goose.
If he missed it even once, he’d complain about it for days.
Zhao Hui laughed. “Roast goose in Guangzhou is the most authentic. Once you’re at the base, who knows when you’ll have it again. Zhiyuan, Feiyu—eat up!”
That night, everyone returned to their rooms.
Sang Feiyu entered her space to organize the supplies she had stored—only to unexpectedly see her grandparents inside the space!
Zhao Hui jumped. “Feiyu?!”
She had already suspected something was odd about the space, but her husband hadn’t believed her.
Now the internal space had split into three storage zones. On top of the original Western-style villa, a three-bedroom apartment had appeared—exactly like their home in Shanghai.
They had tried entering the little villa before, but no matter what they did, they couldn’t get in. Now they realized only the rightful owner could enter that part.
“Grandma, do you know where this is?” Feiyu asked to confirm.
“This is the space,” Zhao Hui answered honestly.
“Feiyu, tell me the truth—did you also get reborn?”
Feiyu nodded vigorously. “Yes!”
“Grandma, I even saw you and Grandpa sacrifice yourselves in the last life just to avenge me!”
As memories of the past life flooded back, the three embraced and cried together.
Afterward, Zhao Hui explained, “Your grandpa and I were reborn to the day before our death—yesterday. When we saw you earlier, we were still in the previous life.”
“Once we came back, a space appeared in our minds.”
“After experimenting a bit, we learned we could enter it with our thoughts, or even physically.”
“Feiyu, once you’re stationed at the base, we can still meet here in the space.”
“If you don’t see us inside, leave a note at our door with the next meeting time—this way we can stay in touch often.”
This space couldn’t have come at a better time.
“Grandma, I’ve stored some supplies in here. If you and Grandpa ever need anything, just take it.”
“Some of it belongs to Ruan Xi—I’ll return it to her when I get the chance.”
Zhao Hui waved it off. “No need. We’ve stored plenty too.”
She took Feiyu to see their warehouse:
“Seafood, meat, eggs, dairy, grain, seasonings, household goods, vegetables…”
“We took a trip to the black market last night and hauled back a ton.”
“We were wondering how to get it to you—now that’s solved! You can take whatever you need.”
Feiyu was stunned. “I went to the black market too, but I never got this much!”
Sang Youde chuckled proudly. “Heh, you’re inexperienced. Your grandma and I are veterans—we knew the right people.”
They’d found a reliable guide to lead them to the best goods—things you couldn’t buy elsewhere.
Zhao Hui added, “Once we’re back in Shanghai, we’ll stockpile even more for you.”
Feiyu grinned from ear to ear. “Mm! I won’t have to worry about running out of supplies ever again!”
Suddenly, Sang Youde remembered something. “Feiyu, the space has a healing function—try to spend time in here, it’ll help your wounds heal faster.”
Feiyu nodded. “I know, but I’m worried Comrade Ning will notice something strange, so I don’t dare come in often.”
Zhao Hui nodded understandingly. “Right, if you heal too fast, it might raise suspicion.”
“In that case, get out now and rest—otherwise, by tomorrow, there won’t even be a scar left.”
Saying goodbye to her grandparents, Sang Feiyu quickly exited the space.
That night was the happiest moment the three of them had experienced since being reborn.
