Chapter 30 – I Already Have a Fiancée, Please Have Some Self-Respect
“Is this person trying to get herself killed?!”
Chen Zhigang couldn’t help but curse under his breath. He then rolled down the car window and saw a female comrade walking over.
“Deputy Company Commander Chen, can you give me a ride to the unit?”
Shen Yunyun’s face suddenly appeared in their line of sight. Sang Feiyu glanced at her with interest, while Ning Zhiyuan’s cold expression looked like a glacier—chilling and terrifying.
“So it’s Medic Shen. Get in.”
Soon, the passenger-side door was opened, and Shen Yunyun climbed in.
She closed the door and turned her head with a bright smile. “Zhiyuan-ge, what a coincidence~”
Ning Zhiyuan placed his arm around Sang Feiyu’s shoulders, his gaze fixed solely on her, not sparing Shen Yunyun a single glance.
Chen Zhigang let out a silly laugh and quickly explained, “Commander, this is the new medic assigned to our unit.”
“And actually, you’re somewhat related.”
Sang Feiyu unexpectedly commented, “Brother Chen, you really know a lot.”
Chen Zhigang thought she was complimenting him and scratched his head sheepishly. “I ran into Medic Shen once in the lower unit. She told me about it.”
Shen Yunyun kept smiling, hiding her embarrassment. Since Ning Zhiyuan ignored her, she tried a new approach. “Sister, may I ask your name?”
Sang Feiyu’s beautiful eyes narrowed slightly. She didn’t mind being called “sister,” but it was a bit much coming from someone who looked older than her.
Sang Feiyu didn’t answer. Chen Zhigang responded instead, “This is our commander’s fiancée—Comrade Sang.”
Comrade Sang?
Shen Yunyun racked her brain but still couldn’t recall any information about this Sang Comrade.
She probed, “Sister Sang, where are you from?”
Just as Chen Zhigang was about to answer, Ning Zhiyuan interrupted, “Focus on driving and keep your eyes on the road.”
Chen Zhigang: …
Shen Yunyun beamed. “Since Deputy Commander Chen is busy driving, Zhiyuan-ge, you’re not driving—surely you can chat with me to pass the time?”
Sang Feiyu calmly turned to look at Ning Zhiyuan.
Without hesitation, he said, “Comrade Shen, I already have a fiancée. Please have some self-respect.”
The tone of his voice was unmistakably firm. The atmosphere in the car instantly turned awkward.
Chen Zhigang gave an awkward cough and chuckled, “Medic Shen, the commander is a bit inconvenienced. I’ll chat with you instead.”
“Sure!” Shen Yunyun agreed. She actually wanted to build rapport with Chen Zhigang and fish out more information about Zhiyuan-ge’s fiancée.
That way, she could ask her aunt to dig into the woman’s background.
The ride from the train station to the unit took two hours.
Part of the road was particularly bumpy. If Ning Zhiyuan hadn’t held onto Sang Feiyu tightly, she would’ve been thrown around.
Meanwhile, Shen Yunyun hit her head twice and looked thoroughly miserable.
When they finally arrived, Shen Yunyun was the first to hop out of the car and ran off to the side to vomit.
Ning Zhiyuan got out, quickly shielding Sang Feiyu’s ears. “Let’s head in first.”
“Mm-hmm.”
He’d noticed how on the train, she had avoided even going near a spittoon. She clearly couldn’t handle such nauseating sights. So he didn’t even consider checking on Shen Yunyun—he just wanted to get his fiancée away from the scene.
Chen Zhigang called out to their backs, “Commander, do you want me to drive you to the family housing compound?”
“No need.”
Getting a clear answer, Chen Zhigang finally got out and went to check on Shen Yunyun.
As soon as he got close, he smelled a sour stench and had to pinch his nose. “Medic Shen, are you okay?”
“Not really. Please take me to my cousin’s place first.”
“Alright.”
The two got back into the car and headed straight for the family compound.
Shen Yunyun instinctively searched for Ning Zhiyuan’s figure but saw nothing.
At this hour, most people were likely taking their afternoon nap.
Suddenly struck by a thought, Shen Yunyun hurriedly asked, “Deputy Company Commander Chen, do you know Zhiyuan-ge’s fiancée’s name?”
“Where is she from?”
“What does her family do?”
“What does she do?”
Chen Zhigang blinked. “Are you doing a household registration check?”
Shen Yunyun gave an awkward smile. “I’m just curious how Zhiyuan-ge suddenly decided to get married.”
Chen Zhigang chuckled and shook his head. “I was curious too.”
“But after seeing Sister-in-law in person today, I completely understand the commander’s eagerness to tie the knot.”
Shen Yunyun pursed her lips. Men—always letting lust lead them!
“You still haven’t answered my questions.”
Chen Zhigang thought for a moment and said, “I don’t know Sister-in-law’s full name either. If you’re curious, you can ask her yourself.”
He might seem simple, but he wasn’t stupid.
He could sense the jealousy in Shen Yunyun toward Comrade Sang and had no intention of leaking any info.
After vomiting and still not getting the information she wanted, Shen Yunyun’s expression grew increasingly sour.
When they arrived, she silently took her belongings and walked into the compound without saying goodbye or thanks.
Chen Zhigang muttered under his breath, “No manners!”
…
Meanwhile, Sang Feiyu and Ning Zhiyuan had arrived at their new house.
There was a small front yard, with the kitchen and bathroom located in it.
It was a two-bedroom unit with a living room—bright and spacious.
“The house has already been cleaned. Later, let me know what else we need and I’ll apply for it from the unit. If they don’t have it, I’ll buy it from the commune another day.”
“Alright.”
Sang Feiyu walked around the place and was quite satisfied. The yard just felt a little empty.
If possible, she would have liked to grow some flowers and plants. But given the current political climate, she didn’t want people accusing her of indulging in capitalist behavior.
“Xiao Yu, are you hungry?”
“I’ll go to the canteen and ask the cook to prepare a couple dishes.”
“I’ll be back soon.”
Sang Feiyu wasn’t in the mood to cook either, so she agreed, “Okay. I’ll tidy up a bit.”
As soon as Ning Zhiyuan left, Sang Feiyu quickly closed the courtyard gate and entered her secret space.
Her grandparents were already waiting there.
“Grandma, Grandpa, I just moved into the family compound today.”
“Have you returned to Shanghai yet?” Sang Feiyu asked rapidly.
Zhao Hui replied, “We’ve already bought train tickets. We’re heading back today.”
“And we also bought a lot of food from Guangzhou. If you get hungry, just take some out to eat.”
Sang Feiyu nodded. “I’ll go make the bed now. If Ning Zhiyuan comes back and doesn’t see me, he might worry.”
“Okay, be safe. We’ll meet again in the space.”
“Alright.”
Sang Feiyu then took out the wedding bedding her grandma had previously purchased—sheets, pillowcases, etc.
These items were thin and didn’t take up much space, so she wasn’t worried that Ning Zhiyuan would suspect anything.
There were also new pillows and quilts in the closet. Sang Feiyu pulled them out and dressed them with the new covers.
In an instant, the room looked warm and festive—red and lively. Now it really felt like a home.
When Ning Zhiyuan returned, he was carrying three aluminum lunchboxes. The moment he saw the red quilt on the bed, with a pair of mandarin ducks embroidered on it, his face flushed red—
