Chapter 24: Sharing a Bed for the Night
The ancestral home’s closet held many of Su Yiren’s clothes.
Although Lu Yunting had no feelings for her and treated her coldly, he never hesitated to spend money on her.
The first time she returned to the ancestral home after their marriage, she hadn’t brought any clothes and borrowed a new nightgown from his sister.
When she came back later, her closet was filled with new clothes, all with tags still attached.
Upon closer inspection, she realized they were identical to the ones in her closet at the villa.
She was surprised and asked Lu Yunting if he had bought them. He simply replied coldly,
“Yun Xi doesn’t like others touching her things. Wear your own clothes from now on.”
She had intended to ask why he bought clothes identical to the ones at the villa, but he clearly didn’t want to talk to her, so she dropped the subject.
She later noticed that every time she came to the ancestral home, her closet would have a few more or fewer clothes, always matching the ones at the villa.
She later learned from Liu Shen that Lu Yunting had instructed the servants to buy matching clothes and send them to the ancestral home whenever something new appeared in her closet.
Su Yiren was touched at the time, thinking that Lu Yunting wasn’t as cold as he seemed.
Even though he wasn’t close to her, he treated others the same way. Perhaps that was just his nature.
But her perception completely changed after she received a photo.
Not long after their marriage, she found a letter addressed to her in her mailbox.
Inside the envelope was a single photo, showing Lu Yunting and Ouyang Shasha.
They were talking about something, Ouyang Shasha was smiling sweetly, and Lu Yunting’s gaze was soft, with a slight smile on his lips.
She realized that Lu Yunting could smile, and he could smile so gently and beautifully.
He just never smiled at her.
From that photo onwards, her expectations for Lu Yunting started to dwindle.
More photos arrived, sent to her irregularly, and this continued for five years.
Recalling the past, Su Yiren sighed softly, took out a long-sleeved nightgown from the closet, and went to the bathroom to wash up.
When she came out of the bathroom, changed into her nightgown, she found Lu Yunting already washed up and reading a book at the head of the bed.
Seeing her, Lu Yunting raised his eyes and glanced at her, his gaze lingering for a few seconds before moving away.
Su Yiren was wearing a wine-red silk nightgown, making her skin appear even whiter and smoother. Her legs, encased in silk pajamas, were straight and slender. She wasn’t wearing slippers, and her toes moved gently as she walked, round and cute.
His gaze moved to her face, and Lu Yunting’s breathing unconsciously deepened.
He had never looked at her face closely, only glancing at it twice when they signed the divorce papers.
But this was different.
That day, she went to his company to meet him, and she had deliberately dressed up. Her already beautiful features became even more exquisite and stunning after she put on makeup.
But now, without makeup or jewelry, she was a different kind of beauty: black hair, dark eyes, fair skin, beautiful in a fresh and ethereal way, captivating.
What was even more different was her eyes.
Perhaps because of the changes in her family, she had been gloomy since she married him, and there was no light in her eyes. Gradually, light appeared in her eyes when she looked at him, but now, that light seemed to have transformed into an indescribable emotion, making one’s heart grow cold.
Seeing Lu Yunting staring at her, Su Yiren felt a little embarrassed and shifted her body, avoiding his gaze.
She thought he would be inseparable from Ouyang Shasha for a while, but he came back so soon.
Su Yiren picked up a hair clip and quickly clipped her damp long hair, saying casually,
“I’m going to Mom’s room.”
“Don’t go,” Lu Yunting interrupted,
“She’s gone out.”
Su Yiren looked at the clock, it was almost ten o’clock, what could she be doing out at this hour?
But she knew Lu Yunting didn’t like talking to her, so she didn’t ask.
Unexpectedly, Lu Yunting put the book on the bedside table and explained to her, something he rarely did,
“My second uncle’s wife is having strong fetal movements. Mom went to check on her.”
Su Yiren nodded understandingly.
Jiang Jinyun came from a medical family, her parents both worked at the hospital. Before she married into the Lu family, she was the director of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of Jiangcheng Central Hospital. Countless children had been born smoothly under her care, and she was quite famous in Jiangcheng.
After marrying into the Lu family, the Lu family funded her to build a private hospital, and Jiang Jinyun became the director.
Later, the business grew, and she opened chain hospitals and beauty salons, and now the Lu family had a certain status in the medical field.
As far as she remembered, her second uncle’s wife hadn’t been married for long, and now she was pregnant, the whole family must be very excited about this child.
Su Yiren hesitated for a moment, then continued to walk out,
“Then I’ll wait in her room.”
Lu Yunting interrupted again,
“Mom has insomnia, you’ll disturb her sleep if you go there.”
“I sleep very quietly.” Su Yiren just didn’t want to be in the same room with him.
The ancestral home was great in every way except for the lack of rooms.
When she was at the villa, she occupied the master bedroom alone, while Lu Yunting slept in the guest room, and they lived their separate lives.
But every time she returned to the ancestral home, she had to share a room and a bed with Lu Yunting, which was very awkward.
Lu Yunting found her words funny and said casually,
“You probably have a misunderstanding about the word ‘quiet’.”
Su Yiren looked at him in surprise, and saw Lu Yunting dim the bedside lamp on his side, then said nonchalantly,
“Why did she let you stay here? You don’t know? Go to sleep.”
Su Yiren’s face instantly flushed.
Yes, she knew what Jiang Jinyun meant.
Ever since they got married, Jiang Jinyun had secretly prepared a nursery, with everything ready.
Once, she accidentally walked in, thinking it was Lu Yunting’s room, but it turned out to be a nursery prepared by Jiang Jinyun for their future child.
She also regularly sent supplements and various pregnancy-enhancing foods to the villa.
For two or three years, she hadn’t gotten pregnant, and Jiang Jinyun seemed to suddenly understand something.
Perhaps she was afraid that she would be anxious about not being able to get pregnant, so her actions became less obvious.
But Su Yiren knew that the nursery was still there, and the things inside were only increasing.
This mother-in-law had really gone to great lengths to have a grandchild.
But she didn’t know that her inability to get pregnant wasn’t due to their physical reasons.
It was because they had never slept together.
For five years of marriage, Lu Yunting,as if he was keeping himself pure for someone, had never touched her.
Su Yiren took a deep breath, the heat that had risen to her cheeks cooled down a bit.
He was really keeping himself pure for Ouyang Shasha.
It wasn’t the first time they shared a bed, and he wouldn’t do anything anyway, so she just considered it sharing a bed for the night.
Thinking about it, Su Yiren stopped being coy, climbed onto the bed from the other side, and lay down under the covers.
The surroundings became quiet, only the sound of their deep and shallow breaths intertwined.
Su Yiren lay with her back to Lu Yunting, unable to hear anything, but she knew he was still sitting there, not moving.
Although she was curious why he wasn’t sleeping yet, thinking about his cold, stinky face, she didn’t want to turn around and look at him.
Just as she closed her eyes and was about to sleep, she suddenly felt the mattress sink slightly.
Then, Lu Yunting suddenly leaned over, his warm body approaching her back.
