Chapter 2
The distance was a bit far, making it unclear whether the person was swaying or if it was just the skirt billowing in the wind. The only thing certain was that it was likely a woman.
Wei Shian said, “We can only see her back, so it doesn’t necessarily mean she’s about to jump.”
“But we still need to go up and check. If she really is in distress, it might be too late to call the police,” Liu Hai replied with a troubled expression. Although this type of rescue wasn’t directly related to their Criminal Investigation Team, as police officers, they couldn’t ignore it once they saw it.
Wei Shian agreed with this, so he said, “I’ll borrow a rope and go up to take a look,” and then quickly ran towards the department store…

Lu Jiu was in a bad mood.
Today was her 22nd birthday.
As per tradition, the family would have dinner together.
Not wanting to miss the family gathering, Lu Jiu had to reschedule her fiancé’s date to noon.
Feeling a bit guilty, she left home two hours early, planning to go to her family’s department store to pick out a gift for her fiancé as a gesture of compensation and surprise.
It was supposed to be a wonderful day.
But unexpectedly, her fiancé gave her a big scare.
Even though more than half an hour had passed, Lu Jiu still couldn’t understand why her fiancé, Li Ze, would be holding another woman.
Was it just because the woman had twisted her ankle and fallen into his arms?
But there were several others with Li Ze at the time, both men and women. Why did he need to avoid suspicion and carry her in a princess hold?
Lu Jiu admitted that she was a bit naive and gentle because of her family’s protection, but that didn’t mean she was stupid.
In broad daylight, and on her family’s property no less, Li Ze’s behavior clearly showed that he didn’t take the Lu family seriously.
Lu Jiu had initially wanted to confront him.
But considering it was her family’s mall, causing a scene would only bring shame to the Lu family.
So, before Li Ze and his group noticed her, Lu Jiu quietly hid on the rooftop.
She desperately needed a quiet place to think about how to face her fiancé afterward.
On one hand, they had grown up together as childhood sweethearts.
On the other, there was the blatant image of him holding another woman.
The more Lu Jiu thought about it, the more troubled she felt.
What made her even more confused were the strange images that began to flash intermittently in her mind.
In a dense, silent forest deep in the mountains, there were giant trees and pink flowers that could speak.
It was bizarre and unbelievable.
Just as Lu Jiu’s vision began to darken, and she staggered, reaching out to steady herself to avoid falling, a swift black shadow swooped down, and she suddenly found herself spinning.
When she came to her senses, she realized she had been knocked to the ground.
Lying on her back, Lu Jiu, her mind filled with new memories, stared blankly at the tall, strong stranger in a police uniform who was half-crouched over her. She was utterly bewildered: “You…you…” What was happening?
The moment Wei Shian met her gaze, he realized he had misunderstood. There was no trace of despair on her face. As he got up and helped her to her feet, he still spoke in a stern tone, “Don’t sit in such a dangerous place again.”
Lu Jiu blinked, only then realizing what the other person had misunderstood.
She wanted to explain that when the department store was built, transparent safety nets were installed outside the railings to prevent any accidents, so it was impossible to fall.
But the words stuck in her throat. No matter how she explained it, it seemed like she had wasted public resources, so she awkwardly clarified, “Officer, I wasn’t trying to commit suicide.”
As soon as the words left her mouth, Lu Jiu’s cheeks turned red, because the police officer in front of her clearly looked quite young.
Wei Shian, as he untied the rope from his waist, didn’t mind being called “uncle” by someone his own age. He had grown used to it ever since he put on the police uniform.
While pulling out his phone to contact Officer Liu, who was looking for a safety cushion, he quickly scanned the girl’s exposed arms and legs, confirming that she wasn’t injured, and then turned and left.
The man was very tall and took large strides. By the time Lu Jiu snapped out of it and chased after him to the stairwell, that tall, strong figure had already completely disappeared.
She felt a bit deflated… She hadn’t even had the chance to say thank you.

The Lu family is quite wealthy.
Although they can’t be compared to the top elite families, they’re still well-known in Haicheng.
So, when the villa area was being developed two years ago, the Lu family directly bought two adjacent units.
As the elders said, one villa for each of the two daughters.
However, since neither sister had gotten married yet, one of the villas remained unoccupied.
Lu Jiu drove her yellow Beetle to the villa’s parking garage and took the elevator from the garage to the first floor.
Fang Wenyi was in the living room, trimming freshly arranged flowers. When she saw her daughter, she asked in surprise, “You’re back? Weren’t you going to celebrate your birthday with Xiao Ze? Why so soon?”
“I had something to take care of, so I came back. I’ll tell you more later.” Lu Jiu didn’t plan to hide what happened with Li Ze from her parents, but she wasn’t ready to talk about it now—not until the whole family was together.
Fang Wenyi didn’t think much of it. “It’s good that you’re back. It’s about to rain heavily, and I was worried about you driving outside. Oh, Peony, the birthday cake has arrived, and the shop even sent a few extra small ones. They’re in the fridge. Do you want to eat one first?”
“Peony” was Lu Jiu’s nickname.
Lu Jiu, also called Peony, or vice versa, showing just how much Mrs. Fang Wenyi loved peonies. “No, I’ll go upstairs and take a shower first. I’m all sweaty.” Mainly, her makeup had melted in the heat, and without makeup remover in her bag, she felt sticky and uncomfortable.
Only then did Fang Wenyi take a closer look at her daughter. She teased the smiling girl, “Oh my, look at those eyes—they’re almost as dark as a panda’s. Go on, go on.”
As Lu Jiu headed up the spiral staircase, her mother continued to nag, “Don’t wear makeup when you go out in the summer. You’re already so beautiful; there’s no need for it…”
Lu Jiu sighed… It was for a date, after all.
But now, Li Ze could no longer stir any emotion in her. She had more important things to sort out.

The Lu family villa had a total of five floors: three above ground and two below.
Lu Jiu and her sister lived on the third floor, each occupying one half.
She pushed open her bedroom door, tossed her small purse onto the table, ignored the phone vibrating inside, and walked straight to the full-length mirror.
They say that after liberation, spirits were no longer allowed to transform. Who would have thought that a bolt of lightning could turn a peony flower spirit, who could never fully transform into a human, into a reincarnated person?
