Chapter 1: Just reborn, the real daughter wants to exchange for marriage
“Mom, isn’t Yushan going on a blind date in a few days? Let me go instead.”
“What… Sisi, are you crazy! You’re about to marry Xiao Yishan, and now you want to go on a blind date?”
“But I’ve never even met Xiao Yishan. Why don’t you let Yushan marry him instead? I’ll switch with her!”
…
When Jiang Yushan regained consciousness, the first thing she heard was this conversation. She opened her eyes and saw a place both strange and familiar. This was the Jiang family home where she had lived before her marriage, and standing at her bedside were her foster mother Wang Yamei and her daughter Jiang Sisi.
Wait a second—she… had been reborn?
The mother and daughter speaking didn’t seem to notice that Jiang Yushan was awake.
“Sisi, that Du Yingfan is just a recently-returned educated youth, and one of his legs is crippled. Sure, he’s planning to take the college entrance exam, but who knows if he’ll even pass. Xiao Yishan, though, is different—he’s a battalion commander! If you marry him, you’ll live a good life.” Wang Yamei really couldn’t understand.
She didn’t get why her daughter suddenly wanted to rush into a blind date early in the morning, even wanting to give up such a good marriage to that useless Jiang Yushan. Now that the college entrance exams were reinstated, plenty of educated youths had returned to the city, but they couldn’t yet be assigned jobs. And even if they did get jobs, how could that compare to military benefits?
“Come on, Mom, don’t underestimate educated youths. They’re intellectuals, really smart people—maybe one day they’ll be soaring high. Besides, the matchmaker said his leg injury happened on the way back to the city, right? It’s not really broken, just needs some rest to recover.” Jiang Sisi smiled sweetly on the outside, but inside she was cursing.
Xiao Yishan? What kind of crap was he! In her previous life, she stupidly married him, only for him to stick her outside the military compound, saying the assigned house was too shabby for her. She had actually believed him. Later, when she was heavily pregnant, she missed him so much she secretly went to see him at the base—only to find him with another woman and child, living happily together like a real family. The shock sent her into premature labor.
That scandal blew up, and everyone cursed her as a shameless mistress, a homewrecker destroying a soldier’s marriage!
Meanwhile, Jiang Yushan married that crippled, returned educated youth Du Yingfan. Who could have guessed that a man who didn’t even pass the college entrance exam would go into business and end up becoming the richest man in Hong Kong? And Jiang Yushan naturally became the tycoon’s wife.
Ha! If Jiang Yushan hadn’t been mistakenly swapped at birth into the Jiang family, would she ever have gotten such a lucky marriage?
“Please, Mom, just let me go on the blind date with Du Yingfan. Besides, I never liked soldiers anyway. What if Xiao Yishan dies on some mission? Wouldn’t that make me a widow?” Jiang Sisi clung to Wang Yamei’s arm pitifully, shaking it coquettishly.
“But…” Wang Yamei hesitated.
She couldn’t brush off everything Sisi said. If Xiao Yishan really died on a mission, what would become of her daughter?
Their town, Xiguang, was right by the sea—just a two-hour ferry ride to the island. That was the real reason Wang Yamei wanted her daughter to marry there: it was close and convenient. But what if something really happened to her son-in-law? What would Sisi do then?
“I heard life on the island is poor, supplies are scarce, and even finding a doctor when you’re sick is hard… Mom, what if I’m big and pregnant someday, and my husband’s away on a mission? What am I supposed to do all alone?”
Wang Yamei pictured the tragic scene her daughter described and wavered again.
“But our engagement with the Xiao family… has long been settled.”
“That’s why I just said—I’ll swap with Yushan. After all, Xiao Yishan’s parents are already dead, and he’s stationed in the army, unable to come back. He probably doesn’t even remember my name…” Jiang Sisi said, shaking her mother’s arm even harder.
“Mom, I’m the real Jiang daughter. Do you really want me to spend the rest of my life as a widow? Just listen to me this once, alright?”
Her certainty made it sound as if Xiao Yishan really was doomed to die.
Wang Yamei was shaken, “You really don’t want to marry Xiao Yishan?”
“Right!” Jiang Sisi nodded firmly.
“…Fine then.”
“Thanks, Mom, you’re the best.”
…
Jiang Yushan sneered inwardly. Since Jiang Sisi was so eager to go on a blind date with Du Yingfan, that could only mean she too had been reborn. Her goal was obvious: to become the tycoon’s wife.
But what she didn’t know was—without Jiang Yushan, Du Yingfan would never make a cent! He’d just remain a crippled, poor man endlessly trying for college.
“Cough, cough.” Jiang Yushan deliberately coughed, reminding them she existed.
“You’re awake.” Wang Yamei saw her up and handed over the medicine from the bedside. “Here, take your medicine.”
“Yushan, I need to tell you something.” Jiang Sisi cut straight to the point. “You don’t have to go to the blind date with Du Yingfan tomorrow. I’ll go in your place.”
“Huh?” Jiang Yushan sat up, took a sip of water, and then asked in surprise, “Why?”
Jiang Sisi looked down at her.
This sickly woman had always been frail since childhood, but undeniably beautiful. Everyone said she was a natural beauty. Even in sickness, her delicate appearance could stir a man’s protective instincts. No wonder Du Yingfan had loved her so much in the last life—even to the point of not caring that she couldn’t bear children.
If she hadn’t been mistakenly swapped into the Jiang family and spoiled like this, could she really have been raised to look so delicate and beautiful?
“Even though you’re not really a Jiang child, my parents have always treated you like their own daughter, haven’t they?” Jiang Sisi said. “Xiao Yishan is a battalion commander in the army, tall and handsome. Such a good marriage being given to you—don’t say my parents treat you badly.”
“But didn’t you just say…” Jiang Yushan paused, her expression growing more puzzled, “that you’ve never met Xiao Yishan? Then how do you know he’s tall and handsome?”
Jiang Sisi: “…”
Crap, careless! So this bitch had been awake all along?
“Y-you’re dumb! He’s a soldier, of course he’s tall and handsome. You don’t even need to see him to know that!” Jiang Sisi snapped, her patience thinning. “Look, if you marry him, you’ll be a battalion commander’s wife. That’s something countless people would dream of.”
“Oh, so you’re just afraid Xiao Yishan might die on duty and leave you a widow, so you’re dumping him on me?” Jiang Yushan asked back.
“I…”
“Aiya, Yushan, that’s not what Sisi means,” Wang Yamei quickly interjected. “I thought about it too. Your health isn’t good, and Du Yingfan is just a frail educated youth with an injured leg. I’m afraid he won’t be able to take care of you. But if you marry Xiao Yishan, that’s different. In the army, all the wives are military spouses—it’s a better environment overall.
“Just switch with Sisi, dear. Mom only wants what’s best for you.”
Jiang Yushan lowered her eyes slightly, thought for a moment, then nodded. “Alright, fine.”
Jiang Sisi, seeing her agree, couldn’t suppress the smile curling on her lips. She let out a secret sigh of relief in her heart. So Jiang Yushan hadn’t been reborn after all.
Of course! Something as precious as rebirth couldn’t possibly happen to just anyone.
Hehehe… Jiang Yushan, go be the homewrecker then!
