The sound of footsteps came quickly Gu Shenyuan turned his head and through the red light curtain, he saw Ye Qingyun running toward him with an anxious face.
Gu Shenyuan glanced at Ye Qingyun, then lowered his head.
…His current appearance was too wretched and ugly.
Since they would part soon, he wanted to leave the best image of himself in Ye Qingyun’s heart.
“Gu Shenyuan! How are you?” Ye Qingyun reached the red light, wanting to touch Gu Shenyuan, but found that he couldn’t pass through the barrier.
He and Gu Shenyuan were separated by a thin layer of red light, standing at opposite ends, unable to feel each other’s warmth.
Ye Qingyun anxiously struck the red light. “Gu Shenyuan, speak! How much longer can you hold on?”
Gu Shenyuan heard Ye Qingyun’s voice. Although he had been thinking about leaving a good impression on Ye Qingyun just a moment ago, he couldn’t help but lift his head to look at him.
He wanted to see him, very badly.
Gu Shenyuan’s face was pale, his whole body devoid of color. Though trembling with pain, when he saw Ye Qingyun, he still forced a smile.
“I might scare you,” Gu Shenyuan said softly, “don’t look at me, im too ugly.”
“You…” Ye Qingyun gritted his teeth, took a deep breath, and placed his hand on the red light.
The skin on his hand felt a sharp pain, but Ye Qingyun didn’t pull it away. Instead, he controlled his invisible mental power and slowly infiltrated the red light.
He needed to find the weak point of this thing as quickly as possible and destroy this weapon to rescue Gu Shenyuan.
At the same time, he had to calm Gu Shenyuan and distract him so he wouldn’t get too agitated and cause any accidents.
“Why are you still concerned about your appearance at a time like this?” Ye Qingyun said in a muffled voice. “You never cared about your looks before.”
Gu Shenyuan smiled and looked at Ye Qingyun without blinking, his eyes full of deep reluctance and longing.
“After I die, you… find someone to take care of you,” Gu Shenyuan paused, clearly struggling with the pain, before continuing, “Don’t raise the child alone. It’s too tiring.”
Although he said this, the thought of Ye Qingyun being with someone else, caring for their child, and even… having children with another man made him feel an unbearable pain.
The lips he had kissed would be kissed by someone else. The hand he had held would be held by another man.
He hadn’t even been able to have a proper wedding with Ye Qingyun, never officially married.
So, Ye Qingyun’s first real husband would not be him. Ye Qingyun’s first time would not be with him.
Another man would experience the pleasures he never did, leaving a deeper mark on Ye Qingyun’s heart.
…He would eventually become a fleeting memory, scattered and forgotten, and the child they had together might be the only proof they had once been together.
Ye Qingyun smiled. At this point, he no longer hid his feelings and said honestly, “That’s not my child. I’m a man, how could I have one?”
Gu Shenyuan froze.
“I was just lying. I said that back then to stop you from running around. Are you stupid?” Ye Qingyun said. “Did you believe such a ridiculous lie?”
Gu Shenyuan lowered his eyes, feeling strangely calm, “…Is that so?”
Then, the last link between him and Ye Qingyun was gone.
It was for the best. The painful past should never have existed. Rather than remembering him, he hoped Ye Qingyun could live happily.
Let it be. Everything was perfect now.
Ye Qingyun spoke again, “I don’t want to find someone else. I just want to be with you. Isn’t it enough for us to be together for the rest of our lives?”
Gu Shenyuan knew this was just sweet talk from Ye Qingyun before his death, but even so, he couldn’t help but feel happy.
“Good.”
“That’s the way it should be. Why do you always want me to find someone else? You need to seriously reflect on that,” Ye Qingyun said, finally finding the weak point of the weapon. As he pulled all his mental energy back, preparing to deliver a fatal blow to the weapon, he continued chatting with Gu Shenyuan.
“Do you believe in reincarnation?”
Gu Shenyuan chuckled softly and shook his head.
For many years, theology had disappeared and been proven non-existent. All strange powers and gods were just tricks played by special ability users.
“There is reincarnation,” Ye Qingyun insisted, even showing a bit of stubbornness. “When someone dies, after a while, they’re reborn into this world again.”
Ye Qingyun’s chest twisted in pain, revealing too much and violating the strict rules. He received a warning.
—
Ye Qingyun didn’t stop talking. He stared at Gu Shenyuan, insisting, “Do you understand?”
Gu Shenyuan didn’t understand. He didn’t know why Ye Qingyun was saying this to him. Did Ye Qingyun want to find his reincarnation and be with him again?
But reincarnation didn’t exist in the world. Even if Ye Qingyun found someone who resembled him, that person wouldn’t truly be him!
He didn’t want anyone to replace him, nor did he want his image in Ye Qingyun’s heart to be completely overshadowed by someone else, or even easily altered.
Gu Shenyuan struggled to stand up. He wanted to explain things to Ye Qingyun and make him abandon the idea of looking for his reincarnation.
Before he could speak, Gu Shenyuan saw a spurt of bright red blood splatter onto the red light barrier.
Gu Shenyuan stared rigidly at the blood, his mind blank. Slowly, his eyes shifted to see Ye Qingyun’s condition.
In an instant, Ye Qingyun’s face had turned pale, his once bright and warm eyes now dim and lifeless, filled with the aura of death.
“…Qingyun?” Gu Shenyuan called in disbelief.
Ye Qingyun looked at him and smiled faintly.
“You won’t die,” Ye Qingyun said gently, his voice soft. “I won’t let you die.”
The red light barrier separating them started to crack, spreading like a spider’s web, and eventually shattered with a loud crash.
The red light particles scattered, disrupting vision, and Gu Shenyuan felt the pain in his body subside. He couldn’t see clearly, but he stumbled forward, desperately trying to find Ye Qingyun.
Gu Shenyuan’s fingertips had grown cold, and his body was trembling. He couldn’t bring himself to think too much about what had happened.
Why had the ability disintegrator suddenly been destroyed? Why had Ye Qingyun changed like that?
As the light particles cleared, Gu Shenyuan finally saw Ye Qingyun lying not far away, his face ashen and his eyes closed.
