Chapter 13: Honey, You’re So Great
Jiang Yuman was unaware of this little drama happening around her. While Fu Jingchen was at the Yao family’s place, she was busy making the bed with Fu Mu.
In the two rooms, the larger one was divided into two smaller rooms for Fu Wangshan and his wife, along with Fu Haitang, while she and Fu Jingchen occupied the slightly smaller room.
Just as they finished making their bed, Fu Jingchen walked in from outside.
Fu Mu quickly asked, “How did it go? What did the brigade leader say?”
Fu Jingchen replied, “The brigade leader agreed.”
“That’s good.” Fu Mu sighed in relief. “Manman, you must be tired from the ride these past few days. You should get some rest tonight. I’ll head back now.”
“Okay.”
After Fu Mu left, the couple wasted no time and soon got ready for bed.
It was still quite early, and as Jiang Yuman lay on the bed, looking at the moonlight filtering through the roof, Fu Jingchen was silent next to her.
Just when she thought he had fallen asleep, he suddenly spoke up:
“If you don’t want to cook tomorrow, you don’t have to. I can handle it when I get back.”
Jiang Yuman instinctively replied, “I can cook; didn’t I mention it in front of my parents and younger sister?”
“Is there something on your mind?” In the darkness, Fu Jingchen slightly turned his head.
She wasn’t asleep and seemed to have something weighing on her.
Jiang Yuman hadn’t expected him to be so perceptive, but since he asked, she decided to be honest:
“Didn’t my parents leave some money with me?”
“I wanted to go to the commune tomorrow to buy some things. The subsidized food is so little, and I can’t survive on it while doing hard work.”
The supplies brought from home could only last two days at most, and what she really needed now was to use the items from her space reasonably.
“…I don’t really know how to get to the commune.” After a pause, Fu Jingchen spoke up.
“You don’t have to worry about that; I’ll ask tomorrow,” Jiang Yuman quickly replied when she saw Fu Jingchen didn’t oppose her plan.
“Alright, but if you can’t find out, come back, and I’ll ask after work.” Fu Jingchen instructed.
“Okay.” Jiang Yuman sweetly agreed, leaning against his shoulder and said, “Husband, you’re so good.”
Whether it was about cooking or his concerns about her not knowing how to get to the commune, he was considerate and attentive in many ways.
He was entirely thinking of her.
Jiang Yuman’s heart was not made of iron; reflecting on what he had done over the past few days, she couldn’t help but feel touched.
Fu Jingchen stiffened, clearly not used to being called that by her.
“…Hmm, sleep now.” After a while, he finally responded.
Jiang Yuman seemed to sense his awkwardness, and she couldn’t help but smile.
As the night grew deeper, the bed quality was poor, and even a slight movement made it creak. Jiang Yuman initially thought she wouldn’t sleep well that night.
However, contrary to her expectations, since this was the only time in the last few days she could lie down on a bed to clear her mind, she slept especially soundly.
The next morning, she wasn’t even awakened by the sounds of other youths talking and cooking in the courtyard.
When Fu Jingchen got up, he looked at her peaceful sleeping face, and his gaze softened significantly. He moved carefully, not wanting to wake her.
The autumn harvest was the busiest and most tense time for the brigade, and a significant part of their hard work depended on these few weeks of harvest. There were strict working hours every day.
The Fu family prepared breakfast for Jiang Yuman. As soon as the work horn sounded, they quickly joined the other youths heading to the fields in small groups.
After several days of hard labor, the youths were all looking thin and haggard from the poor diet.
Among the crowd, the tall and well-built Fu Jingchen stood out like a crane among chickens, attracting many gazes from the surrounding young women.
Yesterday, they hadn’t noticed how such a handsome man joined the brigade! Not only did he have a good face, but his muscular build also radiated a sense of security.
Some young women couldn’t help but gaze at him with admiration.
The most beautiful girl among them turned to her companion and asked, “Sister Zhou, this guy was with you yesterday, right?”
The companion next to her was none other than Zhou Yun.
She had taken the opportunity to chat in the kitchen when the youths were cooking, and many had already recognized her.
Upon hearing the girl ask about Fu Jingchen, Zhou Yun’s expression soured as she nodded, “Not just came here yesterday; he was with us on the train, too.”
“Do you know what his name is?” The girl couldn’t help but ask.
Before Zhou Yun could answer, several of her companions who were with her raised their eyebrows at her.
“Xiqi, you aren’t interested in him, are you?”
“Stop joking!” Fang Xiqi’s face turned a little red, making her response sound unconvincing. “I’m just asking.”
The others teased her, “Oh, just asking, huh…”
Zhou Yun said, “I really don’t know what his name is.”
She had little regard for that family and hadn’t bothered to ask for their names.
“Is he here alone?”
“No, he has his wife, parents, and a younger sister with him.” Zhou Yun said, rolling her eyes. “His wife is incredibly lazy and doesn’t do anything.”
“What? He’s already married?” The other young women glanced at Fang Xiqi, slightly disappointed.
Among the many young women in Shinianzi Brigade, Fang Xiqi was the prettiest. Not just the youths at the youth station but also some of the local men admired her.
Yet she had high standards and had never accepted anyone’s advances.
Now that she finally found a man interesting, only to find out he was married.
Fang Xiqi bit her lip slightly upon hearing Zhou Yun’s words and frowned at her friends, “I was just casually asking; don’t overthink it.”
After that, she quickened her pace to pass them.
The other young women exchanged glances, feeling awkward, and hurried to catch up.
—
Fu Jingchen was completely oblivious to the many pairs of eyes watching him from behind.
Once they reached the field ridge, he stood there waiting for the brigade leader to assign tasks.
Yao Anguo arrived quickly, followed by three boys and one girl—his three sons and daughter.
Seeing that Zhou Yun’s family and Fu Jingchen’s family had arrived, as the brigade leader, he briefly introduced the two families to the villagers.
When he introduced Fu Jingchen, many young unmarried women shot glances at him.
Fu Jingchen seemed unaware of these looks, his dark eyes completely devoid of emotion.
After receiving a hoe, he joined everyone else to work in the fields.
Having spent many years in the army and undergone considerable physical training, the agricultural tasks were not challenging for him.
The young women who noticed his presence occasionally blushed.
During a break, many asked Zhou Yun about him, and upon hearing that he had a wife, they couldn’t help but look regretful.
“Which one is Fu Jingchen’s wife?” Someone scanned the group, whispering.
Since everyone was going to work, Fu Jingchen’s wife should be around, right?
They really wanted to see what his wife looked like!
