Chapter 1: Divorce
—
“Let’s get a divorce!”
“Alright!”
A few days ago, Jiang Banyue discovered that she had transmigrated into a period military marriage novel she had once read. In the story, she was the male lead Shen Yunhe’s first wife, who died young.
The original wife was pregnant with triplets but died in childbirth. Shen Yunhe was left to raise the three children alone. The female lead, Liu Juan, frequently visited to help take care of them. Over time, the children grew close to her, and everyone around them was touched by Liu Juan’s kindness. They all encouraged Shen Yunhe to marry her. Under the persuasion of many, the two eventually got married.
Shen Yunhe was often away on missions. On the surface, Liu Juan treated the children well, but deep down, she resented them. However, she knew she couldn’t mistreat them, or else Shen Yunhe would despise her, and the other families in the military compound would gossip behind her back.
Not only did Liu Juan refrain from abusing the children, but she also spoiled them excessively. They became completely unruly and arrogant. The people in the military compound found them unbearable. No matter how unreasonable their demands were, Liu Juan would always comply.
Some families advised Liu Juan to discipline the children properly, but she would only smile helplessly and say that, as a stepmother, she didn’t dare to scold or punish them. The other families sympathized with her and instructed their own children to stay away from the triplets.
By the time Shen Yunhe realized that his children had grown up spoiled and twisted, it was already too late. They all met tragic ends—
The eldest was hit by a car and died in his twenties.
The second was falsely accused of murder, sentenced to death, and executed.
The youngest daughter was deliberately lured into an affair with a married man, fell into a trap, and died from a miscarriage.
Only then did Shen Yunhe realize that his children had been ruined by indulgence. When he confronted Liu Juan, she wept hysterically, causing a scene, even threatening suicide. In the end, neither of them had a good outcome.
Shen Yunhe wanted a divorce, but Liu Juan refused and threatened to die rather than leave him. To escape her, Shen Yunhe took on long-term missions and never returned home.
When Jiang Banyue first woke up, she saw Shen Yunhe sitting by the hospital bed, utterly exhausted. From the memories in her mind, she quickly learned that her injury was once again caused by Liu Juan.
The original wife had witnessed the girls from the performing arts troupe surrounding Liu Juan, showering her with compliments, saying how well she and Commander Shen suited each other. Liu Juan shyly lowered her head.
Just then, Shen Yunhe happened to walk by, and the girls from the troupe playfully stopped him, deliberately pushing Liu Juan toward him. Liu Juan went along with it, pretending to stumble in his direction, but Shen Yunhe swiftly dodged out of the way. The original wife had been furious at the scene, rushing forward to grab Liu Juan by the hair and beating her up on the spot.
Liu Juan was delicate and frail, the type that could be knocked over by a gust of wind. The original wife, however, stood at 1.68 meters tall and weighed 120 pounds—fighting Liu Juan was simply too easy. The girls from the performing arts troupe were terrified, feeling guilty but too afraid to intervene.
Liu Juan came from a wealthy family. Her father was a factory director, and she frequently received luxury goods from home. When she was in a good mood, she would share them with the others. Upon realizing that Liu Juan liked Commander Shen, the troupe girls sought to please her by constantly pairing her with him. Liu Juan enjoyed the attention and never discouraged their behavior—she just hadn’t expected to be caught by Shen Yunhe’s wife.
Shen Yunhe was frustrated. No matter where he went, he always ran into Liu Juan. Because of her, he and his wife constantly fought. At first, he had the patience to explain, but she never listened.
Over time, he grew exhausted. He was already drained from missions outside, and when he returned home, he had to deal with his wife’s endless outbursts.
He and Liu Juan were barely acquaintances—whenever they met, he avoided her as much as possible. So why wouldn’t his wife believe him?
During the fight, the original wife accidentally hit her head and passed out. When she woke up again, she had become Jiang Banyue, a woman from the 22nd century.
The moment she regained consciousness, she had no intention of getting entangled with the male and female leads any further. Without hesitation, she asked for a divorce.
Shen Yunhe was momentarily stunned but agreed. He quickly drafted the divorce paperwork, and the two of them headed straight to the civil affairs bureau to finalize the divorce. Before long, each of them walked out with a divorce certificate in hand.
Jiang Banyue gently touched her still-flat belly and lowered her head in contemplation.
She was already pregnant with triplets. This time, she was determined to give them a perfect future. As for their biological father—he could get lost as far away as possible. She would never let her children have anything to do with the so-called male and female leads.
It was now the year 1986. She could return to the original wife’s hometown in Chuan’an County and open a bakery. Back in the 22nd century, she had become a pastry chef simply because she loved sweets. Now, she could rely on her skills to make money and raise her babies.
Seeing her remain silent with her head lowered, Shen Yunhe felt an inexplicable discomfort. He took out a bankbook and handed it to her.
“This is all my savings over the years. Take it as compensation.”
Jiang Banyue blinked in surprise but swiftly accepted it without hesitation. She needed money to raise her babies and start a business—she might as well consider it child support from their deadbeat father.
Without the slightest reluctance, Jiang Banyue turned and walked away with the bankbook in hand. Behind her, Shen Yunhe’s cool, steady voice rang out.
“There are still some of your things at the military compound. When do you want to come pick them up?”
“No need!” Jiang Banyue waved her arm without looking back.
“I don’t want them anymore. You can deal with them however you like!”
Shen Yunhe was momentarily at a loss. Just days ago, she had been making a scene over him as if her life depended on it, yet now, she was leaving without the slightest hesitation.
Women really were unpredictable.
