Chapter 7: His Body Trembled Even More
Imagine a man who once forced you to donate a kidney for the woman he cherished, now holding you in his arms, crying.
How would you feel?
The answer: pure horror.
Lu Hui was still too shocked to fully process the situation. This scene was downright terrifying.
Xie Ran held her tightly—so tightly that her chest felt like it was about to be crushed, making it difficult to breathe.
His eyes were bloodshot, his lashes damp with tears. His trembling fingers brushed against her cheek, and the warmth beneath his fingertips only made his body shake more violently.
She was real. The living, breathing version of her. Not just an illusion in his dreams—something he could see but never touch.
After carefully considering her response, Lu Hui gave the most logical answer.
“I’m sorry, sir. I don’t know you.”
Amnesia was always a classic excuse.
She had no idea how Xie Ran had come from the book into her world, but from the moment she had completed her task with diligence, she had severed all ties with him.
Xie Ran’s face turned pale.
Lu Hui lifted her eyes and met his disbelieving gaze. She repeated her words with certainty.
“Yes, I really don’t know you. Sir, you must have mistaken me for someone else.”
Xie Ran looked as if he had suffered a massive blow. He stood there in stunned silence.
“I’m Xie Ran. How could you not remember me?” He frowned, murmuring under his breath.
Lu Hui would rather die than admit she recognized him. What was this man doing here? Did he come back to take her other kidney?! Good heavens!
“It seems you truly have the wrong person,” Lu Hui said as she pulled herself free from his grip. Her gaze was clear and unwavering, brimming with sincerity, as if she was genuinely telling the truth.
She took a few steps back, putting some distance between them—neither too close nor too far.
Beside her, Xu Qin seemed equally startled. Xie Ran’s sudden movement had been too fast for her to react, and she couldn’t even understand their conversation.
Xie Ran stared into Lu Hui’s eyes. His voice was hoarse but firm.
“I wouldn’t mistake you for someone else.”
Realizing he had acted too rashly, he gradually calmed himself. The furrow in his brows eased, and his tone softened.
“I was too impulsive. I must have frightened you. I’m sorry.”
Lu Hui remained polite.
“It’s fine.”
Xie Ran didn’t like how distant she was being, but he had no right to complain.
Some things… he had long lost the right to ask for.
Lu Hui turned to her mother. “If there’s nothing else, I’ll head upstairs.”
Xu Qin, surprisingly, didn’t make things difficult for her and simply frowned. “Go on up.”
Xie Ran’s eyes followed her as she left. He watched her back and said,
“I’ll come find you again tomorrow.”
Lu Hui: “…”
That won’t be necessary.
—
After returning to her room, Lu Hui locked the door securely.
She logged into the system’s backend on her computer. The moment her profile icon lit up in the chat group, her former colleagues were stunned.
Campus Novel’s Delicate NPC: [? Lu Hui, didn’t you already retire with honor?]
Era Novel’s Wealthy NPC: [Why are you back? T-T I’m so jealous. I don’t want to do this anymore! The ’70s are miserable, and the dumb male lead is so ridiculously chauvinistic. I want out.]
Rebirth Novel’s Vengeful NPC: [Long time no see! T-T Seeing you gives me motivation again. Compared to your experiences, our struggles are nothing!]
Lu Hui stayed silent for a long time as the conversation in the group quickly exceeded 999+ messages.
Then, in a moment of pure rage, she slammed her fingers onto the keyboard and sent:
Most Miserable Supporting Character, Lu Hui: [Damn you, system! Get the hell out here!!!]

The group fell silent.
Seeing her outburst, everyone suddenly “remembered” they had work to do and scattered.
One minute later, the system still didn’t show up. Lu Hui continued cursing in the group chat.
Lurkers, terrified, kept quiet.
Not even during the kidney-extraction mission had Lu Hui been this furious.
Two minutes later, after completely crashing the backend with her ranting, the system finally gave in.
A familiar voice echoed in her mind.
“Hello, dear user. System No. 666 is here for post-mission service. How can I assist you?”
Lu Hui asked, “Why is Xie Ran standing in front of me? I need an explanation.”
Silence.
Then the system cleared its throat.
“Sorry, dear user, but we don’t recognize that person.”
Lu Hui sneered.
“Keep acting dumb, and I’ll blow up your headquarters.”
Realizing it couldn’t keep up the charade, the system immediately admitted defeat.
“At first, we were just as shocked as you were.”
“And then?”
“After investigation, we found that this is an uncontrollable phenomenon—an anomaly where a character escapes their world. The male lead’s overwhelming resentment and obsession broke the barriers between worlds, allowing him to find a crossing point and—well—appear in yours.”
“So how do we fix this?”
“Apologies, dear user, but as he is not a government-registered employee of the Quick Transmigration Bureau, he is outside our jurisdiction.”
Lu Hui understood immediately.
This shameless system was basically saying: We can’t do anything. He’s your problem now.
She hadn’t been this furious in ages.
Why the hell did Xie Ran have such strong resentment?! He wasn’t even the one who got physically and emotionally tortured!
“Dear user, if you need any further assistance, feel free to call on me. Oh, and please don’t curse in the group chat~”
“Useless trash. Get lost.”
“Sob sob sob…“
Now that she understood the situation, Lu Hui concluded that pretending to have amnesia was the best course of action.
She seriously suspected that Xie Ran had come back to steal her second kidney. Dream on! He should go back to where he came from.
—
That evening, Sheng Weicai returned home and asked Xu Qin about the incident.
Xu Qin poured him a cup of tea.
“Mr. Xie came looking for Huihui.”
Sheng Weicai’s expression darkened. “Did she cause trouble for him?”
Xu Qin smiled. “No. From what I can tell, Mr. Xie seems quite fond of our Huihui. They seem to have some unresolved misunderstandings.”
Sheng Weicai’s face softened a little.
“As long as she’s not causing trouble.”
Sheng Zhaoming interjected, “Xie Ran likes her?”
Xu Qin was slightly intimidated by this stepson of hers. He had sharp brows, piercing eyes, and an imposing presence. “It seems that way.”
Sheng Zhaoming folded his newspaper and let out a cold laugh.
“And Lu Hui told you this?”
Xu Qin had intended to deny it, but before she could, Sheng Zhaoming had already risen from his seat.
Tall and lean, his gaze swept over her with an unreadable expression, making her uneasy.
“Lu Hui has always been full of herself. It’s nothing new. It’s one thing to make a fool of herself at home, but don’t go spreading such nonsense outside and letting others laugh at us.”
With that, he turned and went upstairs.
He had always been this way—blunt and to the point. When it came to the Sheng family, especially his sister Sheng Lian, he was fiercely protective, never letting her suffer even the slightest grievance.
But when it came to Lu Hui? He couldn’t care less. His attitude toward her was cold, dismissive, and harsh.
—
That night, Lu Hui, still fuming over Xie Ran’s sudden appearance, went to the balcony for some fresh air.
Unfortunately, luck was not on her side.
The moment she stepped out, she bumped into Sheng Zhaoming coming up the stairs.
