Chapter 13: Husband, You’re So Great
Jiang Yuman was unaware of the previous encounter. While Fu Jingchen was at the Yao family’s house, she was busy making the bed with Fu’s Mother.
The two rooms were divided, with the larger room shared by Fu Wangshan and his wife, and Fu Haitang, while Fu Jingchen and Jiang Yuman used the smaller room.
Just as they finished setting up their room, Fu Jingchen walked in from outside.
Fu’s Mother quickly asked, “How did it go? What did the brigade leader say?”
Fu Jingchen replied, “The brigade leader agreed.”
“That’s great.” Fu’s Mother sighed in relief. “Manman, you’ve been tired from the journey these past few days. Rest well tonight; I’ll head back now.”
“Okay.”
After Fu’s Mother left, the couple didn’t delay and quickly settled down for bed.
It was still early, and Jiang Yuman lay on the bed, staring at the moonlight streaming in through the roof. Fu Jingchen remained still beside her.
Just when she thought he had fallen asleep, he suddenly spoke up:
“If you don’t want to cook tomorrow, you don’t have to. I’ll do it when I come back.”
Jiang Yuman instinctively replied, “I can cook; I mentioned it in front of Dad and Haitang, didn’t I?”
“Is something bothering you?” In the darkness, Fu Jingchen slightly turned his head.
She hadn’t been sleeping well, as if there was something on her mind.
Jiang Yuman was surprised at how perceptive he was. But since he had asked, she decided to tell him: “Didn’t my parents leave some money with me?”
“I want to go to the commune tomorrow to buy some things. The subsidized food is too little; it’s hard to work when you don’t eat enough.”
The supplies they had brought from home would last at most two days. She needed to figure out how to efficiently use the items in her space.
“…I don’t know how to get to the commune.” After a pause, Fu Jingchen spoke.
“Don’t worry about that. I’ll ask tomorrow,” Jiang Yuman said quickly, seeing that Fu Jingchen didn’t oppose her.
“Okay. If you can’t find out, just come back. I’ll ask after work.” Fu Jingchen instructed.
“Alright.” Jiang Yuman sweetly responded, leaning against his shoulder. “Husband, you’re so great.”
Whether it was about cooking or his concern that she might not find out how to get to the commune, he was thoughtful and considerate in every way.
He was entirely focused on her well-being.
Jiang Yuman’s heart wasn’t made of stone; thinking about all he had done for her these past few days, she couldn’t help but feel moved.
Fu Jingchen stiffened, clearly unaccustomed to being called that by Jiang Yuman.
“…Yeah, sleep now.” After a long pause, he finally responded.
Jiang Yuman could almost sense his awkwardness, and the corners of her mouth couldn’t help but lift.
As the night deepened, the bed was poor quality, creaking at the slightest movement. Jiang Yuman thought she would have a restless night.
However, just the opposite happened. It was the first time in two days that she could lie down in bed. After settling her worries, she fell into a deep sleep.
The next morning, even the sounds of other educated youths talking and cooking in the courtyard didn’t wake her.
When Fu Jingchen got up, he looked at her peaceful sleeping face, and his gaze softened. He moved quietly, not wanting to disturb her.
The autumn harvest was a crucial time for the brigade, where half a year’s hard work depended on this half-month’s yield. There were strict work hours every day.
The Fu family prepared breakfast for Jiang Yuman. When the work whistle blew, they quickly followed the educated youths in groups towards the fields.
After a few days of hard labor and poor meals, the educated youths looked pale and thin.
Tall and long-legged, Fu Jingchen stood out among them like a crane among chickens, attracting the attention of many young women along the way.
Yesterday, they hadn’t noticed how handsome a man had arrived at the brigade!
Not only was his face handsome, but his muscular physique also exuded a sense of security.
Some of the female educated youths couldn’t tear their eyes away from him.
The prettiest among them turned to ask the person beside her, “Sister Zhou, this male comrade came with you guys yesterday, right?”
The person next to her was Zhou Yun.
She intentionally chatted with the educated youths while cooking yesterday, so many of them recognized her by now.
Upon hearing the question about Fu Jingchen, Zhou Yun frowned and nodded. “Not only did he come with us yesterday, but he was also with us on the train.”
“Do you know his name?” the girl couldn’t help but ask.
Before Zhou Yun could answer, several other female educated youths chimed in with raised eyebrows:
“Xiweng, you’re not actually interested in him, are you?”
“Don’t talk nonsense!” Fang Xiweng’s face flushed slightly, making her words sound rather unconvincing. “I’m just asking.”
The others laughed, saying, “Oh, just asking, huh…”
Zhou Yun said, “I really don’t know what his name is.”
She had been disapproving of that whole family along the way, so why would she care about their names?
“Did he come here alone?” someone asked.
“No, his wife, parents, and younger sister all came with him.” Zhou Yun sneered as she spoke. “His wife is so lazy and doesn’t do anything.”
“What? He brought his wife with him!” Several female educated youths exchanged glances with Fang Xiweng, feeling a bit disappointed.
Among all the female educated youths in the Shi Nuanzi Brigade, Fang Xiweng was the most beautiful. Not only the educated youths but also many men from the brigade liked her.
However, she had always been picky and had never agreed to anyone’s pursuit.
Now that she finally showed interest in a male comrade, it turned out he was already married.
Upon hearing Zhou Yun’s words, Fang Xiweng bit her lip slightly and frowned at her friends. “I was just asking casually; don’t overthink it.”
With that, she quickened her pace and walked ahead of them.
The other girls exchanged awkward glances and hurried to catch up.
…
Fu Jingchen was completely unaware of how many eyes were on him behind.
When he reached the field, he stood there waiting for the brigade leader to assign tasks.
Yao Anguo arrived quickly, accompanied by three sons and a daughter.
Seeing Zhou Yun’s family and Fu Jingchen’s family, he, as the brigade leader, briefly introduced both families to the villagers.
When he introduced Fu Jingchen, many young women’s eyes were drawn to him.
Fu Jingchen seemed oblivious to the attention, his dark eyes cold and devoid of any emotion.
Once he received a hoe, he joined everyone in the fields to work.
Having served in the army, he was accustomed to physical training, so the farm work was nothing to him.
The young women who were secretly watching him couldn’t help but blush whenever they caught a glimpse of him.
During a break, many people asked Zhou Yun about him. When they heard he was married, expressions of regret spread across their faces.
“Which one is Fu Jingchen’s wife?” someone whispered as they scanned the surroundings.
Since everyone was going to work, Fu Jingchen’s wife should be around, right?
They were all eager to see what his wife looked like!
