Chapter 20: A Woman Worth Bearing Children For
As soon as those words fell, everyone’s gaze turned to the Fu family.
Zhou Yun’s eyes sparkled with malice, eagerly waiting to see a good show.
With the team leader so angry, she couldn’t believe this family wouldn’t teach their daughter-in-law a lesson.
But she was destined to be disappointed.
Fu Jingchen seemed to disregard Yao Anguo’s darkening expression. He turned to Jiang Yuman, who was rubbing her arms, and asked, “Are you cold?”
Jiang Yuman looked at him in surprise, not expecting him to focus on that.
However, she felt quite pleased; a man like this was worthy of her bearing his children.
She smiled and replied, “It is a bit cold.”
“Then let’s hurry inside so you don’t get cold,” Fu Jingchen urged.
Thus, surrounded by his family, Jiang Yuman entered the house.
The onlookers watched in astonishment!
As the last to leave, Fu Haitang looked back and said, “Team Leader, we will have a good talk about my sister-in-law.”
With that, the door closed.
As the door shut, the crowd outside was still processing what had just happened.
When they finally came to their senses, they found it quite amusing.
It was autumn, and although the sun was blazing during the day, the nights were still quite warm.
How could their daughter-in-law possibly be cold standing outside?
It was just that her family was protecting her!
Zhou Yun witnessed this scene and was infuriated.
“Why was it that they were both women, yet her husband publicly humiliated her, while Jiang Yuman’s husband stood up for her?”
The looks from those around her felt like slaps to her face.
She and Jiang Yuman had just gone through a round of conflict, and she had been thoroughly defeated!
Thinking of this, her face darkened, and she quickly picked up her son and went back inside.
Yang Anfu and Old Lady Cai hurried to follow her.
With both parties having left, the remaining crowd could only observe Yao Anguo, eager to see his reaction.
But Yao Anguo, being the team leader, couldn’t show his discomfort even if he felt uneasy.
After sending everyone home to rest, he took his family back as well.
On the way home, Yao San’s (Yao Zhenjiang’s wife) [1]It was mentioned earlier that Yao Zhenjiang is the third son, which is why his wife is referred to as ‘Yao San’s Wife’—because ‘San’ means ‘three’ or … Continue reading wife stifled her laughter, barely containing herself.
Once inside, Yao Zhenjiang lowered his voice, “Are you crazy? You laughed at him in front of him. Don’t you worry he’ll be angry?”
“Why should I worry?” Yao San’s wife rolled her eyes. “He treats his sons like grass, dotes on his daughter, and you still want to defend him!”
It wasn’t a secret that his parents favored their daughters, but she hadn’t expected it to be so blatant after marrying in.
Take yesterday, for example, when the Fu family sent over good things: all that white flour and meat went straight to Yao Simeng’s room.
Those dried meats were one thing; they could forgo them.
But the dozens of pounds of white flour? Her husband had brought it from the Fu family! What was wrong with a family making a meal of white flour?
“Alright, why are you bringing this up again?” Yao Zhenjiang said helplessly.
“Why can’t I bring this up? It was fine before, but now I’m pregnant with your son. If I don’t eat well, how will the child grow properly?”
Yao San’s wife rubbed her eight-month belly, irritated.
She was carrying their family’s next generation, yet her in-laws acted as if they didn’t care, not even giving her a small stove to use.
With such poor food, how could the baby grow healthy?
It was only because her husband still remembered her, occasionally bringing back game from the mountains to nourish her.
Otherwise, she would have already caused a scene at home.
“Anyway, he behaves like a king at home. It’s not often he suffers outside. I’m happy to see that, so I just laughed, what’s wrong with that?”
To be honest, among all the educated youths, she found Jiang Yuman particularly likable today.
“Fine, fine, fine,” Yao Zhenjiang said, unable to argue with his wife. “As long as you’re happy.”
…
Jiang Yuman, oblivious to the conversation outside, was lying on the bed, letting Fu Jingchen massage her cramped legs.
She felt no guilt for making him pamper her after a long day. She was fully entitled to it.
After all, the child in her belly was his doing, so it was only right he took responsibility for her discomfort.
As the cramp eased, she finally relaxed.
Then she noticed Fu Jingchen taking off his jacket and placing it beside the bed.
He must have been assigned to harvest wheat that afternoon, as there was a hole in his sleeve.
Jiang Yuman pinched the jacket between her fingers, inspecting it. “These jackets don’t last well in the countryside. We need to make some new clothes.”
Fu Jingchen looked at her. “Can you sew?”
“Of course not. I bought some fabric in the city and will have someone help me make it,” Jiang Yuman replied.
The original host could sew, but that skill didn’t belong to her.
Moreover, hand-sewing took a long time and had a low margin for error. Those pieces of fabric were expensive; she couldn’t afford to waste them.
Fu Jingchen nodded. “Just do what you feel like doing.”
Hearing that, Jiang Yuman’s eyes softened significantly.
Fu Jingchen was indeed a decent man; even in the countryside, he didn’t expect her to do everything.
Especially today, his family had shown their protective attitude towards her!
In comparing both families today, even Jiang Yuman felt quite satisfied.
“Is your leg feeling better?” Fu Jingchen continued to massage for a while before asking.
“Much better,” Jiang Yuman kicked him playfully with her leg, her voice unintentionally sweet. “Hurry up and warm the bed; my legs are a bit cold.”
It was indeed chilly now; the earlier heat had turned cool.
Jiang Yuman was sensitive to cold, and as soon as Fu Jingchen left the warmth of the stove, she felt cold.
Fu Jingchen lay down beside her under the covers.
Jiang Yuman snuggled into his embrace like a snake, feeling his warmth, and instinctively pressed closer.
As she moved, she accidentally brushed against something indescribable.
Fu Jingchen inhaled sharply, grabbing her leg, his voice husky. “Don’t move.”
Jiang Yuman wasn’t completely ignorant; realizing what she had touched, her face flushed a deep red.
She quickly stopped moving, explaining, “I-I didn’t mean to.”
“It’s fine.” Fu Jingchen steadied his breath.
Jiang Yuman discreetly shifted her leg away, seeking warmth elsewhere, and hurriedly released him.
If she didn’t let go soon, her face would be as red as a tomato.
However, Fu Jingchen, in the prime of his youth, was feeling restless and couldn’t fall asleep, so he sneaked out for a cold shower.
Jiang Yuman, already asleep in bed, pretended not to hear.
