Xu Duoduo had always been very cautious. When neighbors in the community exchanged supplies, she never participated. When people started visiting each other in the hallways out of boredom, she stayed inside, avoiding contact as much as possible.
The internet connection was unstable, causing delays in all news updates.
Messages she sent to her friends disappeared into the void, making her heart sink further.
At the same time—
She began keeping a diary.
Day 1: The zombie outbreak began. The authorities were working hard to contain it, so the situation was still somewhat under control. However, the number of vehicles coming in and out of the neighborhood increased, and many people in protective suits were busy downstairs.
Day 2: The temperature fluctuated wildly. The morning was so hot that people couldn’t stand wearing thick clothes, but by nighttime, the cold became unbearable.
Fortunately, basic utilities were still functioning. The heating came on just in time to save them.
Day 3: Issues with the water supply began. The zombie virus was spreading beyond control, and the worst part was that power outages became more frequent.
Xu Duoduo barely slept for three days. She focused on cooking as much food as possible, but she eventually stopped eating anything with a strong scent—
Because after the third day, food deliveries stopped. The neighborhood descended into chaos. The streets became eerily empty, and no more cars arrived.
Day 4: The tap water started smelling strange. People were afraid to drink it. By the afternoon, some couldn’t endure anymore and wanted to leave the neighborhood to check on the outside world. Many shouted from their apartments, urging them not to go.
But those people retorted, “If we don’t go out, are we supposed to die of thirst?”
“You’re all cowards! If you won’t go, we will!”
“Exactly! What if the government has abandoned us? The medical staff didn’t even show up today! Are we supposed to just sit here like prisoners?!”
The boldest ones ignored the warnings. After everything that had happened, they were already on the verge of a mental breakdown.
Just as they were about to step outside, a figure in a protective suit appeared, making them feel relieved. They immediately waved and even started shouting,
“Damn it, we thought you guys had left us to starve and die of thirst! Do you even know that the tap water smells weird?!”
Others chimed in, “Yeah! Hurry up and fix the drinking water!”
Xu Duoduo felt they were being extremely rude to the volunteers. But the next second, she noticed something off about the person in the protective suit. Their movements weren’t normal.
Her heart sank further. Any last shred of hope vanished.
She pulled the curtains shut, leaned against the wall, and sat down. From her storage space, she took out her diary and wrote:
November 6, 2029
All medical volunteers have fallen. The neighborhood is about to lose order.
If no officials had come, it could only mean one thing—they couldn’t come.
The situation was truly dire.
Sure enough, screams of terror erupted from downstairs. The people who had planned to leave shrieked, claiming that the volunteer had also been infected with rabies.
Upstairs, the residents were too scared to make a sound. Almost everyone immediately locked their doors.
Tears welled up in Xu Duoduo’s eyes, but there was nothing she could do. The Apocalypse Survival Handbook had predicted when society would collapse. It was frighteningly accurate—on the fourth day, it officially began.
She wiped her tears away. From now on, she could only rely on herself. She had to endure.
With no authorities maintaining order, the difference was drastic. On the fourth night of the apocalypse, the neighborhood was filled with even more screams. Heavy objects crashed down, and unsettling animalistic growls echoed from downstairs.
In other apartment buildings, people had started fighting over supplies. Everyone was gripped by fear.
Whenever the internet connection worked, Xu Duoduo checked the community group chat. Despair filled the messages. She forced herself to block out the negativity—
She needed to stay calm.
The worst thing in situations like this was losing one’s mind. As an ordinary person, Xu Duoduo thought she was already handling things well. Besides, she still had her storage space. Without it, she might have also felt utterly hopeless.
While others panicked over food and water shortages, she was relatively fine.
That’s why, when someone knocked on her door, Xu Duoduo remained completely silent. She had food and water. Staying hidden was her best protection.
Two more days passed. The water and electricity completely shut down, and the neighborhood was lifeless.
Now, the only ones wandering downstairs were zombies. They scratched at doors daily, but at this early stage, they weren’t strong enough to break through. They only clawed mindlessly.
As long as she didn’t go downstairs, she was safe.
However, fights over resources among the survivors grew more intense. People had tried breaking down Xu Duoduo’s door multiple times. Some neighbors whispered about how sturdy her door was, complaining that they couldn’t break it open no matter how hard they tried.
They had no idea—if they did manage to break in, Xu Duoduo, who was waiting by the door, would immediately start up her chainsaw. She was terrified, but that didn’t mean she wouldn’t fight back.
Fortunately, her door was incredibly solid.
The security door she had spent over ten thousand yuan on was truly worth it.
But even though she hadn’t made contact with anyone—
Xu Duoduo couldn’t understand why she seemed to be turning into a zombie.
Her thoughts became sluggish. Her body felt slow and stiff. Even her tongue didn’t work properly.
By the tenth day of the apocalypse, she had no choice but to admit it—she had turned into a zombie.
She was so furious that she lay in bed for ten whole days.
Starting off as a zombie?! Then what was the point of having a protagonist-tier storage space?!
This was so infuriating—she could just die (again)!
She opened her mouth, but she couldn’t even speak properly anymore. All she could do was “Abba abba.” That only made her angrier, and she kicked her legs in frustration.
Then, she noticed that her legs moved more smoothly. She rolled over and realized her stiffness was fading. Her body was regaining some agility—though her tongue still wouldn’t cooperate.
Maybe it was because she hadn’t spoken in too long. Or maybe it was psychological.
She could still only say “Abba abba,” which made her puff out her cheeks in frustration. She sat cross-legged on the bed for a long time before finally remembering to write in her diary.
That’s when she realized—her brain was slower, too. It took her much longer to process things. This fact infuriated her so much that she fumed for three days straight.
Then, she discovered something that made her want to cry even more—she didn’t need to eat or drink to survive.
The apocalypse had just begun. She had stockpiled so much food and water.
And now, she couldn’t even eat any of it!
Xu Duoduo almost burst into tears—but zombies didn’t have tears. So she shut up, took out some food, and chewed it dryly. She could only taste about one percent of the flavor.
Her heart turned cold.
While she lay around sulking multiple times, more than half a month had passed since the apocalypse began.
Xu Duoduo had no idea what was happening outside. Her neighborhood was completely deserted. The zombies downstairs kept increasing in number. Some could even climb walls now.
There were still survivors.
She could hear them scavenging for supplies during the day. More than once, they had tried to pry open her door—but they still failed. They eventually gave up.
Xu Duoduo didn’t bother with them. After all, she wasn’t human anymore.
She had planned to continue lazing around—
Until the dawn of Day 26 of the apocalypse.
For the first time in a long while, the quiet city of K was rocked by the sound of artillery.
The rescue operation had finally begun.
