If the volume of her space could grow by two more zeros, Jiang Ning would be racing against time to sweep through this entire city.
Instead, she could only helplessly watch survival supplies sink, while humans waged an even more brutal fight for survival—fighting each other with knives over a moldy piece of bread.
Reality was cruel; Jiang Ning could only take care of herself.
She refocused and continued racing against the floodwaters.
Milk, yogurt, milk powder, alpaca milk, soy milk powder, cereal, lotus root powder, lotus seed and lily soup, white sugar, rock sugar, brown sugar, and so on.
The water had already risen to her thighs. She didn’t have time to read labels, much less be picky. Her hands quickly swept across the shelves. No matter if she liked it or not, it was better than feeding the flood.
Various canned goods, dried fruits and snacks, chocolate, energy bars, biscuits, cheese, chicken legs, chicken wings, duck necks, beef jerky, mutton cubes, flavored dried tofu, spicy strips, bamboo shoots buns—her space was visibly filling up fast.
After grabbing a large pile of noodles, Jiang Ning came to the instant food section: instant noodles, snail rice noodles, hot and sour noodles, hot dry noodles—all kinds were supposed to be there, but due to the typhoon, most had been picked clean. Especially the instant noodles, only old pickled cabbage flavor was left.
She didn’t hesitate, nor did she mind the smell of feet.
In her previous life, she had gnawed on tree bark and eaten “Guanyin soil” to survive. In the end, she had to dig with sticks just to go to the bathroom.
She reached the seasoning section, and without hesitation started stocking up on essentials—peanut oil, corn oil, olive oil, camellia oil. She skipped blended oils because there was simply no space.
Soy sauce, oyster sauce, vinegar, cooking wine—all she took were the large containers that wouldn’t take up much space.
Lao Gan Ma chili sauce, olive vegetable, doubanjiang (fermented bean paste), fermented tofu, canned bamboo shoots—there were dozens of brands on the shelves, and she swept through the rows.
When she found something she liked, even those soaked in water, she fished them out to avoid waste.
Next came various seasoning packets: boiled beef, pickled vegetable oil, spicy hotpot sauce, Orleans chicken wings, salted chicken powder. She barely glanced at many as she hurried.
The water had already risen to her waist. Although she wore a full-body raincoat, she still felt cold and moving was especially inconvenient.
But this was the last chance to do a big stock-up. Taking a bit more now was better than fighting someone to the death later for a morsel of food, right?
Unfortunately, the first floor was flooded, otherwise there would still be precious resources.
When the water level neared her chest, she already felt herself floating, and most of the goods were either submerged or drifting on the surface.
Collecting supplies became even harder, but luckily her space was already about seventy to eighty percent full—almost all the way to the toilet.
Just as she reached for some puffed snacks floating on the water, a beam of light swept not far off.
Jiang Ning was surprised—was there another person also doing zero-cost shopping here?
A flashlight was shining around. She quickly hid behind a shelf, staying extremely alert.
She didn’t know how many people had arrived, and since they were in the water, they couldn’t move freely. If a fight broke out, she might suffer losses. Plus, she had almost cleared out the important supplies on the second floor. If someone discovered her space…
Jiang Ning couldn’t afford to take that risk. She took out a portable diving mask from her space, put it on, and quietly dove underwater, swimming toward the fire escape.
Floodwater poured into her raincoat, making her body heavy and awkward.
She held her breath and swam while stripping off the raincoat, but couldn’t hold it any longer and surfaced briefly to breathe through the mask.
From the sounds, it seemed only one person had come.
Jiang Ning relaxed a bit, then pushed open the fire door with great effort and took the stairs up to the rooftop.
She didn’t turn on her flashlight, gasping for breath to rest, took out some chocolate to recharge, and waited for the dizziness to pass before barefootedly heading toward the roof.
The rooftop was empty, and the water had already flooded over half of the second floor.
As she left, Jiang Ning glanced at a Hummer she had her eye on in the parking lot.
The same model as the 1801’s vehicle—not only high clearance and powerful engine, but an intimidating look that could easily push regular SUVs aside. Truly a battlefield vehicle in the apocalypse.
Unfortunately, her space couldn’t hold it. Compared to that, she chose a more comfortable and multifunctional RV.
She patted the hood, feeling like she was cutting off a limb inside.
Soon these cars would all be submerged and then washed away by the flood. What a pity.
The water was rising rapidly, and the current became turbulent. The rubber raft was easily swept away.
Jiang Ning had no choice but to take out her speedboat. There were many underwater obstacles, so she dared not go too fast, fearing it would be punctured.
The whole city was plunged into darkness. The waterproof miner’s lamp had a limited range, so she could only slowly move through the water.
The speedboat was easy to operate, but the motor noise could easily alert others.
Fortunately, the typhoon had just ended, and the government was actively launching rescue efforts. Even if people nearby heard the motor, they would think it was a fire rescue team.
Jiang Ning didn’t return to the apartment but raced against time toward another place.
Three kilometers away, the speedboat traveled slowly in the dark for half an hour.
A six-story commercial building for electronics—the flood had already submerged the third floor.
Jiang Ning used a glass breaker to smash a window on the fourth floor and climbed inside, heading straight to a solar technology company’s retail store.
She had seen a flyer before the typhoon came about the latest solar generators. She had come here specially to check it out—high-efficiency solar panels, off-grid power generation, flexible grid-frequency inverters that could both concentrate sunlight efficiently and use city power for fast charging, and most importantly, a battery box with a capacity of 100 kWh.
A full 100 kWh—enough to power several air conditioners or heaters at once!
Of course, the price was hefty—680,000 yuan!
Jiang Ning couldn’t afford to buy one but memorized the store well.
Compared to it, other generators were junk.
Confirming the mall was empty, she took out a crowbar and pried open the roller shutter.
The storefront was small. After opening the door, she headed straight to the new generator displayed in the center position.
The display only had the battery box and inverter. She pried open the back storeroom and found another of the same model—without hesitation, she loaded it into her space.
The solar panels and brackets took up a lot of space. Other areas of her space were full, so she could only put them on the balcony.
Afraid the parts would be damaged, she took all the remaining ones as well.
Seeing there was still room on the balcony, she took several more portable battery boxes. Though their storage capacity was much smaller, being able to charge directly was already very good.
The mall still had many expensive appliances, but there was no more space.
It was already past five in the morning; she had to get back before dawn.
The water flow was stronger. Jiang Ning steered the speedboat against the wind and rain.
Approaching Jinrong residential area, she turned off the motor and paddled to the calmer water under the building, then quietly swapped out the rubber raft.
The sky was just before dawn, enough light to see vaguely.
Just as she paddled to a unit window, she noticed another rubber raft.
No— it was a speedboat.
Someone was on it, placing things through the window.
From the figure, it was a man, and he turned around, immediately spotting Jiang Ning.
She had no time to hide—immediately on full alert…
