Her vision blurred and she couldn’t see clearly, so Jiang Ning took out binoculars.
She saw two rubber boats with several men and women standing on them, holding wooden forks and iron rods, repeatedly hitting the windowsill that extended out from the fifth floor.
On the windowsill stood a wet dog, baring sharp fangs, crazily barking at them.
“Quick, kill it! Tonight we’ll have meat to eat.”
The men and women looked extremely excited, constantly raising their weapons, teasing the dog which dodged awkwardly but refused to give in, fiercely confronting them.
The disaster came unexpectedly. Everyone was unprepared. All the food supplies were soaked in water; many people starved to death.
Now seeing a dog, even if it was skinny and bony, it meant a full meal, right?
This was meat — who wouldn’t want it?
Their eyes gleamed greedily, as if they wanted to tear it apart alive.
Jiang Ning hadn’t wanted to interfere, but the moment she saw the dog’s face, her whole body trembled.
It was Kele!
That name was hers.
Kele was abandoned by its owner, sold to a dog meat restaurant, but when about to be slaughtered, it suddenly fought back and bit the boss before escaping.
With nowhere to go, it wandered near the university town, often staying near the small eateries across the street from the residential area, frequently chased away by shop owners.
At that time, Jiang Ning was reselling dog food; every time she encountered it, she would scatter some dog food or throw a sausage.
A dog abandoned by its owner was like a baby abandoned by its parents — the only difference was that humans had orphanages, but stray dogs were doomed to be exterminated if caught.
At first, it was very cautious and resisted Jiang Ning’s approach, only eating after she had left and gone far away.
Gradually, after getting used to her, although still wary and resistant, it would peek from behind trees and secretly watch her.
Later, Jiang Ning liked Yang Weicong and was always scheming to get close to him, so she stopped her dog food business and forgot about Kele.
When they met again, it was already the freezing cold season.
Jiang Ning didn’t know how it had survived — its fur had all fallen out, covered in festering frostbite sores, and it was so skinny it was nothing but skin and bones.
Even so, when it saw her being bullied by several villains, it rushed up recklessly and tore at them wildly.
If it hadn’t pounced, a baseball bat would have smashed her forehead.
To protect her, Kele was beaten to death with sticks, but it never released its bite on the attacker’s wrist until death.
She lived, but it was beaten to death, cooked, and shared as food.
After being reborn, she had looked for it several times nearby but couldn’t find a trace.
How absurd and laughable it was — she poured her heart out to Yang Weicong, but he just watched her get beaten to death by demons.
Yet the stray dog she occasionally fed protected her with its life.
“Kele.”
Upon seeing it again, Jiang Ning’s face streamed with tears.
Without hesitation, she quickly drove the speedboat over, shouting, “Kele!”
The stubborn mastiff standing on the windowsill brightened its eyes at the sound, instinctively turning to look.
Distracted for a moment, it was heavily hit by a stick and let out a piercing scream.
It twisted its head and leapt at the attacker, tearing wildly.
The rubber boat shook violently. Kele bit the attacker’s body, while others came over to help, swinging their sticks.
It dodged left and right with agility.
The sticks instead landed on the bitten men, who howled in pain.
The other rubber boat rowed over but was uncontrollable in the rushing current. The two rubber boats collided, and two people lost their footing and fell into the water, shouting, “Ah! Help, save me…”
Before they could recover, Kele jumped at the approaching rubber boat.
The mastiff’s strong jumping power knocked someone heavily down…
After a few rounds, three people were in the water and two were successfully bitten.
One man drew a knife and stabbed hard into the dog.
Jiang Ning drove the speedboat and rammed into the rubber boat, flipping it over, then made a sharp turn and headed back, shouting, “Kele.”
Kele pushed off hard with its skinny legs, jumping three to four meters, landing steadily on Jiang Ning’s speedboat.
The engine roared and floodwaters splashed up.
By the time they clambered onto the rubber boat, the speedboat was nowhere in sight.
The sky was gloomy, and they couldn’t even see the woman’s face clearly.
The dog meat stew plan failed, and several people were injured — really bad luck!
Everyone kept cursing loudly.
The speedboat docked below the apartment building in the neighborhood. Jiang Ning’s vision was blurred by rain. She hurriedly reached out to hold Kele, but Kele backed away, eyes full of caution and defense.
Its condition was terrible — blood dripping from its mouth, most of its fur gone, and many mottled wounds.
It was obvious this wasn’t the first time it had been trapped by humans today.
In the apocalypse, to survive, there was nothing one wouldn’t do.
Not to mention stray dogs — before the typhoon, many people in the community kept pets. Pet owners cared more for their animals than themselves. But now, where were any of them?
Jiang Ning didn’t dare to think about how it had survived all this time.
“Kele, don’t be afraid,” Jiang Ning tried to soothe it. “From now on, we’ll stick together. As long as I have food, you won’t go hungry.”
But it still kept its distance and never relaxed its guard.
Jiang Ning couldn’t even get close, let alone touch it.
She thought for a moment, then took out a sausage from her bag, unwrapped it, and tossed it over.
Even with food in front of it, hungry Kele was still wary, slowly approaching to sniff before snapping it up, then continuing to stare at her.
Jiang Ning tore ten sausages before she could barely touch its head.
Despite her invitation to care for it, Kele refused and tried to jump into the floodwaters to leave.
Stray dogs were not only highly cautious but also intelligent. They knew this was human territory and going in meant ending up stewed in an iron pot.
That’s how those foolish dogs had died!
Having finally found it, Jiang Ning wouldn’t let it go, quickly pulling out a chicken drumstick.
Then she showed it some dog food from her backpack.
“Kele, if you come with me, you’ll always be full.”
The dog food was swept up from a supermarket during a race against the flood. She had grabbed whatever she could and only realized later that there was a lot of dog food and pet cans mixed in.
She hadn’t dared throw it away, thinking to mix it with rabbit feed.
She hadn’t expected it was meant for Kele all along.
Kele’s eyes locked tightly on the dog food bag, seemingly lost in some memory.
Jiang Ning squeezed the bag, and hearing the noise, Kele drooled.
Finally, it gave in.
Jiang Ning brought it safely ashore. Her hard heart melted like chocolate — silky smooth and sweetly fragrant.
In this filthy apocalypse, she was no longer wandering alone in the dark. She had finally found a partner to live or die with.
“Wow, a dog! A dog!”
“Grandma, I want to eat dog meat.”
