Apocalypse: Farm or Be Devoured!
Apocalypse: Farm or Be Devoured! Chapter 21

“What does level ten mean? It means the arrival of the automation era!

From now on, Xia Chen wouldn’t need to pretend to sleep every night to painstakingly dig holes and plant fields in the space. He had been working hard, whether he went to bed late or got up early, yet he still ended up being a typical example of someone who went to bed late and got up late.

“Tongban, how does this automatic planting work?” Xia Chen couldn’t wait to give it a try.

[The main interface has been updated. Please check it yourself, Host.]

Xia Chen recalled Xia Tongban saying that at level ten, there would be a resource pack expansion. Upon opening the main interface, he saw several icons flashing, indicating changes.

Xia Chen tapped on each one and discovered the automatic planting operation within the land list. His 1,024 plots of land were displayed as small square grids with arrow icons. Xia Chen could arrange these grids himself.

The settings allowed Xia Chen to specify which grids would be planted with which seeds. After making his selections, there were options for one-click planting and harvesting. If the settings weren’t changed, and the one-click planting option was utilized, the process would continue to follow the original settings.

In the event specified seeds ran out, there was also a replenishment option to list backup seeds, arranged in order of selection. This was a very intelligent feature.

As for the harvested seeds, Xia Chen needed to prioritize setting their allocated warehouse grids. Once one-click harvesting was selected, the seeds would be automatically stored. The updated warehouse even provided a one-click sell function, marking a big step forward in the entire space’s progress.

Speaking of the warehouse, the current thirty grids remained sufficient. Xia Chen didn’t have large quantities of each crop planted at the moment. Categorizing them by type and changing the capacity to unlimited would be a significant waste. He simply organized them into categories like vegetables, fruits, grains, and others. After all, a storage space of 1,000 cubic meters could hold an incredible quantity of goods.

Additionally, this update brought many benefits. For example, Xia Chen had a Novice Farmer title, but he didn’t initially understand its purpose. Now, he discovered that this title actually increased the yield of his crops by ten percent!

This was incredibly valuable. Ten percent might not seem like much, but over time, the increased profits would be significant!

If the Novice Farmer title alone was this useful, Xia Chen couldn’t help but look forward to higher-level titles. Unfortunately, he didn’t know how to upgrade them. When he asked Tongban, he was told it required an evaluation of multiple criteria, including level, achievement completion, task completion, and so on. Hearing this, Xia Chen chose to accept the situation as it was.

Perhaps the title would upgrade naturally as he continued planting.

Level ten had another main highlight—Xia Chen now possessed a magical plot of land.

In the land list, the name was simply “Magical Land,” and the quantity was one. The icon was a small square grid slightly larger than ordinary land, even emitting a faint glow. It seemed, at first glance, to be particularly special.

“Tongban, where is this Magical Land?” Xia Chen had accumulated a significant amount of land. At level eight, he already had 256 plots. Recently, he often couldn’t finish planting at night and felt frustrated to see empty land.

Now, his plot count had quadrupled, and at a glance, it was a vast expanse. He walked around the perimeter but was unable to find any area that could be considered extraordinary or magical.

[It hasn’t materialized yet. The host can choose the placement location.]

“I can choose myself?” Xia Chen was pleasantly surprised. He thought about it. His plots extended from his original starting point, using the length and width as coordinate axes and expanding to the east and north. Whenever he entered the space, he was next to this origin point.

“Let’s do this.” Xia Chen found a spot not far from the origin, stood still, then tapped the ground with his toes and stepped back. The next second, the land he had just stepped on began to change. The texture, color, and shape transformed at lightning speed. In just a few seconds, a one-meter square plot of land appeared in front of him, covered in a layer of fine white sand.

“It’s impressive,” Xia Chen muttered. He now had seven magical seeds, so he took one and planned to try planting it.

“Do I plant it directly?” Xia Chen held the magical seed that looked like a transparent glass bead. He gestured left and right, unsure how to proceed. “Is it like planting vegetables? Dig a hole, bury the seed, and water it?”

Xia Tongban replied: [Yes, the host can also try using different soil and water sources. You can cover the seed directly then add water.]

Xia Chen thought for a moment. This seemed like trying one’s luck to forge legendary equipment in games. The magical seed was the base, the soil and water were resources, and energy water was an exceptional auxiliary resource. The final product depended on luck.

Since he could add ingredients, Xia Chen felt he should experiment. He exited the space, intending to dig some soil from behind the house. As for water, he planned to first try the water he usually used to water the vegetables. It was drawn from the river by his eldest brother and had excellent water quality.

As soon as he went out, he ran into Nan’er playing in the courtyard. Xia Chen paused, then changed his mind. His luck didn’t seem to be very good. In matters of chance, it was best to try rubbing off some of others’ luck.

He had heard that children were very spiritually responsive. Since his nephew was working hard for the family’s prosperity, he should contribute some of his own efforts too!

“Nan’er, come here for a minute. Your Little Uncle has a task for you,” Xia Chen called his little nephew over and whispered instructions to him.

Nan’er asked, confused, “Bring soil back? From where?”

“Anywhere. Wherever you think is good, take it from there.” Xia Chen couldn’t reveal the location. He was counting on Nan’er’s good luck.

Xia Chen found a small wicker basket for Nan’er to carry the soil. Although Tongban said enough to fill his fist would suffice, Xia Chen thought…if the soil Nan’er found was useful for growing good things, they could store more for next time.

Xia “Resourceful” Chen indulged in his high intelligence for a while, then waited anxiously for his little nephew to return. He didn’t dare enter the space, afraid Nan’er wouldn’t be able to find him.

It took a full half an hour before Nan’er returned, with Dong’er helping carry the basket. The children’s hands and clothes were covered in dirt.

When Qiao Niang saw the two brothers in this state, she got angry. She picked up a thin bamboo stick and wanted to whip them. Xia Chen hurriedly went up to stop her, saying that he had asked them to go.

Qiao Niang looked at the three of them suspiciously, not believing his claim. “You asked them to go? What do you want this soil for? Yuanbao, don’t cover for these two mischievous monkeys.”

“I’m planting vegetables,” Xia Chen said with a smile. “Sister-in-law, did you see? The vegetables in my backyard have sprouted. I asked Nan’er to dig some soil from elsewhere to see if it’s any good.”

“Our Yuanbao really has ideas. Scholars think differently.” Qiao Niang covered her mouth and laughed, not getting angry at him. She reprimanded her two sons a few more times, reminding them to behave, then left while supporting her waist.

As soon as Qiao Niang left, Dong’er immediately said, “My mother is biased. I’m going to be angry!” Nan’er nodded along vigorously.

Xia Chen took out two candy pieces from his pouch and fed one to each of the boys. Their hands were dirty, so he fed them directly. “Still angry?” he asked with a smile.

Since raising a few little ones, Xia Chen had gotten into the habit of keeping snacks in his pouch to give to them.

“A little bit,” Dong’er mumbled with the candy in his mouth, his words unclear. “If there’s one more candy, I won’t be angry.” Nan’er continued to nod in agreement.

“Do you want candied chestnuts?!” Xia Chen flicked their foreheads and took the small wicker basket, turning to head toward the backyard.

He pretended to sprinkle some soil in the back, not daring to waste too much for fear of ruining it. He took the rest to his own room.

As soon as he entered the space, Xia Chen couldn’t wait to dig a small hole in the white sand. He placed the magical seed inside, then covered it with a handful of soil brought back by Nan’er.

This land was magical! As soon as the soil was covered, the overturned white sand flowed, quickly covering all the scattered soil. The surface was once again a flat expanse of white sandy land.

“Tongban, how long will it take to mature?” Xia Chen squatted down. He watched for a while, but there was no change, unlike his vegetables where sprouts would emerge quickly.

[The time is uncertain. The shortest is ten minutes, and the longest has no upper limit.]

Xia Chen was shocked. “I only have this one plot of magical land. If it never grows, won’t my land be wasted?”

[The longer the growth time, the more likely it is to yield powerful magical plants. There are gains and losses. Please maintain a calm attitude, Host.]

“I can’t!” Xia Chen angrily threw down his shovel. “How do I feel like you’re constantly digging pits for me to fall into?”

Xia Tongban quickly retorted: [It wasn’t me, I didn’t do it, don’t make things up!]

“Where did you learn that denial combo?! Saying that just makes you seem even more suspicious!” Xia Chen stomped his foot angrily, feeling foolish for his earlier excitement.

Xia Tongban fell silent, then cleverly changed the subject: [Host, you have an unclaimed gift pack and achievement reward. Would you like to claim them now?]

“Where did the gift pack come from?” Xia Chen blinked in surprise. Ah, right! He’d reached level ten, there should be a reward pack.

In the previous random task, he had been rewarded with fifteen gold. Because it was completed ahead of time, he received an additional five gold. Xia Tongban deducted a little over one gold to repay the debt, leaving Xia Chen with a balance of nearly twenty gold. He was practically rich overnight!

In addition, he was also given ten gems. With the fifteen he originally had, Xia Chen now possessed twenty-five, bringing him closer to the ten-pull in the gem prize pool.

Xia Chen also opened the newly given skill book, and then he gained a strange skill called “Flower Whisperer.” He understood flower language, a subject popular with many young girls. He already knew a few of the most common meanings. Could this skill allow him to talk to flowers?

There were no flowers planted in the space. Xia Chen planned to try it out after going out. First, he claimed the small reward from the achievement chest—planting a magical seed once—and received five gems. Then he rubbed his hands in anticipation, ready to open his big gift pack.

Author’s Note:

You absolutely can’t guess where Nan’er dug the soil from!
