Apocalypse: Living the Good Life Deep in the Mountains
Apocalypse: Living the Good Life Deep in the Mountains Chapter 154: Food for the Wolf King

In the early days of the apocalypse, the heavy rain continued unabated. The family compound was severely flooded on the lower floors, and some people developed high fevers after getting chilled.

At that time, everyone still held a faint hope that the rain would stop. Mother Fu thought that the disaster wouldn’t last long and that the government would definitely send aid. So, she gave what little fever-reducing and cold medicine they had left to the sick person.

But after the second round of rain, when the youngest grandson still had a fever, the apocalypse had already entered its second month.

The whole family begged the remaining survivors in the compound, but only Taozi gave them a small amount of medicine, enough for just one day. Unfortunately, the medicine wasn’t enough, and the grandson didn’t recover in time. His condition worsened, and he ultimately passed away.

At that time, the Fu family was disappointed and in pain, but they could somewhat understand that the others might really have run out of medicine.

However, no one expected that right after, zombies began to roam freely. The son and daughter-in-law went out with the other survivors to gather supplies. After splitting up, the daughter-in-law never returned. They said she had gone off on her own and was bitten by zombies because of her recklessness.

But the Fu family knew the personality of their eldest daughter-in-law well. She was capable but always cautious, and would never take risks without careful thought.

Unfortunately, even when Fu Chao fought with the leader of the group, no one revealed the truth to them.

It was from that point on that the Fu family, who had once hoped for unity to overcome the disaster, completely changed. They became cold and distant, no longer easily compromising, and even somewhat indifferent.

Eagle, feeling sorry for his mother, gently pulled her into a hug. “It’s okay, mom. We’ll find out eventually.”

Seeing the look in Eagle’s eyes, Nan Muran nodded slightly. Her spiritual power had reached level five, and she could now try to trace the memories of others.

When Mother Fu saw her son looking downcast, she quickly sighed and changed the subject. “This meat is really well roasted.”

She was sincere in her praise, after all, her previously weak body now felt much better after eating.

Nan Muran, cheeks puffed with food, nodded at Mother Fu. “Wu Ge and Si Ye are really skilled at cooking.”

Mother Fu looked at her for a moment, then smiled warmly. This girl had once stood in front of the Taoist temple with a cold, murderous look, making everyone want to keep their distance. Now, though, she was soft and beautiful.

“After you finish eating, let’s rest around the fire. We’ll send you down the mountain first thing tomorrow morning.” Nan Muran smiled at Mother Fu, then let out a satisfied burp.

When everyone had eaten until they couldn’t fit in another bite, there was still a large piece of tiger meat left on the roasting rack—almost half a tiger.

A group of people from the nearby power plant stared at the roast meat, saliva dripping from their mouths. They thought, “Now that they’re full, it’s our turn, right?”

The meat smelled so good, and they had been hungry for so long. They were about to go crazy with hunger.

The Wolf King glanced at the greedy humans and turned his gaze to the remaining tiger meat on the rack. After a long moment of thought, the Wolf King got up and silently walked over to Nan Muran, gently rubbing his noble head against her shoulder.

The Fu family and Taozi, who had been tense because of the Wolf King’s sudden approach, were stunned when they saw its actions. What was going on? Was it trying to please them?

Nan Muran turned around, and without anyone saying anything, she already knew what the Wolf King was thinking. “You want the rest? You can have it, but the question is, can you eat that much?”

It wasn’t that Nan Muran didn’t want to give it to him; the piece she had already given was large enough. Wasn’t she afraid it would be too much? She instinctively glanced at the Wolf King’s large frame—almost two meters long, with a shoulder height of over 90 centimeters.

Alright, with a body like that, it needed a lot of food.

Just as the Wolf King was starting to feel annoyed at being watched and thought about leaving, Nan Muran stood up and took the remaining tiger meat off the rack, offering it to the Wolf King. “Here, you can have all of it.”

The Fu family, though obviously feeling a bit regretful, knew it was the Wolf King’s meat to begin with, and whatever decision was made was up to them. So, none of them, not even Taozi, showed any abnormal reaction.

The Wolf King, staring at the huge piece of tiger meat in front of it, was clearly surprised. It hadn’t expected this human to be so generous.

“Take it quickly,” Nan Muran said. Since the apocalypse began, she had been cold and indifferent to humans, even ruthless at times, but she was always patient with other beings.

Except, of course, with those who committed evil and ate humans.

The Wolf King bit into nearly half of the tiger meat and turned to leave the temple.

“It left?!” Taozi was a bit anxious. This wolf wasn’t exactly easy to get along with. It only behaved around the goddess. They couldn’t just let it go!

Nan Muran smiled faintly, watching the Wolf King’s retreating figure. “It wasn’t trying to give me food.”

“It will come back after delivering the food,” Si Ye explained to Taozi.

“I didn’t realize it was so loyal,” Nan Muran said淡淡 (calmly).

Si Ye nodded and lowered his voice. “Actually, the area around Half Mountain is quite large.”

Perhaps because he had once been a part of the Blood Wolf Special Operations Team, he felt an inexplicable fondness for the Wolf King.

Nan Muran sighed lightly, looking at his profile—the sharp brows, the hooked nose, and the attractive lips, all adding up to make him very likable. “Chasing after something is not a business transaction.”

Si Ye froze for a moment, a little confused by her words.

“My mom always said, the more you want something, the more you have to keep a balanced mindset. You can’t be impatient or go against basic principles. Just make sure to make an effort at the right time, and you’ll succeed,” Nan Muran said, her eyes full of a light smile.

Si Ye understood. It turned out she had wanted to tame the Wolf King all along, even more thoughtfully and earlier than he had.

“Impressive.”

“Snow’s falling,” Eagle said, surprised by the heavy snowflakes drifting down.

Luckily, they had set up the campfire in the front hall of the temple’s back hall, so they wouldn’t get wet in the snow and could keep the fire going.

“It’s getting cold outside, and we might not be able to sleep well tonight. Let’s go inside and stay warm,” Jiawu said as he began packing up, signaling the others to move.

Once inside, Jiawu and Xiao Qijin started helping to clean up the side of the hall where the tiger had been.

The workers from the power plant felt a chill down their spines as they watched the calm way Jiawu and Xiao Qijin moved, especially the boy, who couldn’t have been older than twelve or thirteen, yet he had such an intense presence. They couldn’t help but feel a shiver.

Xiao Qijin placed the last of the skulls outside, then gathered a pile of straw from the back of the room and laid it around the campfire. Growing up in the mountains, he knew exactly how to stay warm.

“Qijin’s amazing,” Nan Muran said, only contributing praise, as she did no hard work herself.

Xiao Qijin smiled at her, then took out a thermos from Si Ye’s bag. “Sister, warm water.”

Nan Muran happily accepted it and took a sip, feeling all the warmth spread through her body.

The Star assault team made it a priority to always put Nan Muran first. This wasn’t just a habit for Si Ye and Jiawu, but for Eagle and Xiao Qijin as well.
