After the smooth handover of the villa keys, everyone initially planned to separate and get on with their respective tasks.
Eagle and Seven Jin were thinking of using the opportunity of the renovation here to go home and spend some time with their families.
Nan Muran, Si Ye, Jiawu, and the others planned to take Bai Mei to the villa at Guo Fei’s place.
“I haven’t seen Jia Jia and Duoduo in such a long time, I really miss them,” Nan Muran said, recalling how chubby and adorable the little ones were, smiling as she spoke.
Guo Fei smiled and looked at her. “Speaking of which, your Jia Jia has been mentioning you for a long time.”
The group, chatting and laughing, was about to exit the villa when suddenly, a green figure darted past at high speed, nearly crashing into them.
“What are you doing? Why are you in such a rush?” Chen Jianguo scolded when he saw the near collision.
Just as his words finished, an urgent assembly alarm sounded from behind the military office building not far from the villa.
That direction was the military camp of the West City Security Base, where all the soldiers from the HB Military District’s Special Forces Brigade were stationed. If not for an emergency, they wouldn’t have all rushed out at once.
The other units of the base were encamped in the four corners of the base, and faint assembly sounds could still be heard.
Both Si Ye and Eagle, former soldiers, immediately tensed up at the sound of the emergency alarm, instinctively becoming alert.
“Is something going on outside the base?” Si Ye asked, glancing at Chen Jianguo, who had furrowed his brows.
“Commander Chen, a massive wave of zombies is approaching the front of the base, and there are…” The messenger soldier struggled to catch his breath before hurriedly explaining.
Fear and confusion were clearly evident in the soldier’s eyes. The main issue was that the animals at the forefront of the approaching zombie horde were acting strangely. This was the first time they had seen such animals since the apocalypse, after countless encounters with zombie hordes.
The unknown was causing a deep sense of unease.
After hearing the soldier’s report, Nan Muran and Si Ye exchanged glances, immediately understanding what the soldier had not said outright.
Chen Jianguo, his face grim, looked at the soldier. “Clarify, what else is in front of them?”
“The team leader said, at the very front of the zombie horde, there are hundreds of animals that have already turned into zombies,” the soldier said, panting heavily.
Chen Jianguo frowned deeply upon hearing this. Han Yingtian and the others also showed confusion. Since the base was established, after the acid rain, zombie outbreaks became frequent. High-level mutated zombies would occasionally attack the security base.
Therefore, they had encountered various zombie armies, and their combat experience was considerable.
However, having zombie animals in front of the zombie horde was something entirely new.
The group of Nan Muran exchanged looks. On their way back to West City, they had already encountered zombie wolves led by Xingchen and Yin Xin from the Shen Sha organization.
If there were no surprises, the current attack on the West City Security Base would also be the work of the Shen Sha organization. But what exactly was their goal in relentlessly attacking large security bases?
Did they want power? Clearly not. So what were they after? Nan Muran couldn’t quite figure it out.
“This situation is special. I’ll excuse myself…” Chen Jianguo said, intending to take his leave.
Before he could finish, Nan Muran directly interrupted, “Would it be convenient for us to go over and take a look?”
Chen Jianguo was initially surprised. Nan Muran and her group didn’t live within the base, clearly avoiding involvement with the security base. So why had they suddenly changed their mind?
Unless there was something they cared about. After a moment of thought, Chen Jianguo nodded in agreement.
He wanted to know what connection Nan Muran’s group had with the attack, but his instinct told him they might be able to help the base deal with the current crisis.
“Brother Wu, please take Mei Jie back to Fei Ge’s villa and wait there.”
“Eagle, go back and guard the small courtyard. I’ll go with Si Ye, Seven Jin, Xuan Yue, and Tank to assess the situation,” Nan Muran said, her voice still cold, her tone leaving no room for argument.
There was no need for further discussion. Both Eagle and Jiawu understood the key point in Nan Muran’s words.
With a zombie horde of hundreds of thousands attacking the West City military base, the situation was urgent. Inside the base, there were also forces like Lin Weicheng and the Ouyang family, creating another layer of danger.
The only way to ensure the safety of the people most important to Xincui was to guard those within the base. Only then could they deal with the situation outside without any worries.
Upon hearing Nan Muran’s composed arrangements, Chen Jianguo instinctively looked at her a few more times. He could almost be certain that Nan Muran and her group knew far more about this sudden attack than he had imagined.
But given the situation, with war imminent, it wasn’t the time to dwell on these matters.
However, hearing Nan Muran’s instructions reminded Chen Jianguo that if the base was attacked, those inside who were anxious might cause trouble. He gave a knowing look to his long-time aide, who immediately understood the situation.
Without another word, Chen Jianguo turned and walked toward the outside.
After arranging everything, the group split up to take action.
The construction of the West City military security base’s walls was modeled after ancient city walls, with high walls and deep moats, and a solid structure. Even if cannons were fired at it, the walls would be as firm as a dam, unlikely to be damaged.
To get a clearer view of the battlefield, Chen Jianguo went to the highest point on the city wall. The base was surrounded by mountains, and the enemy could only attack from the south and west sides. Nan Muran followed him to the top of the wall, where they could see the distant scene.
In the distance, tens of thousands of zombies appeared as dense black spots on the white snowfield. They stretched endlessly, but it was clear that they were getting closer to the West City Security Base. The whole scene looked like an ant swarm moving forward, sending a chill down one’s spine.
What stood out in the binoculars were the various beasts at the very front of the zombie horde.
Tigers, wolves, hyenas, dogs… all kinds of animals were included. Their movements seemed almost normal, but upon closer inspection, their eyes were silvery-gray, with a faint greenish glow.
Compared to the slow-moving zombie horde, these beasts were agile, almost playful, making the situation even more chilling. Clearly, these creatures were much more difficult to deal with than the zombies.
“Nan Jie, Captain,” Chen Dong, who had just arrived on the city wall, immediately noticed Nan Muran and Si Ye standing by the wall. He couldn’t help but express his excitement.
The others, including the newly joined Alpha Wolf squad members, looked at them with admiration.
Before Chen Dong and the others could approach, a snow-white figure about half their height blocked their path, its gaze unfriendly.
Tank, who was standing next to Xuan Yue, gave a lazy glance at Chen Dong and the others, not even bothering to raise his eyelids, showing no intention of reminding Xuan Yue that she had blocked the wrong person.
“Xuan Yue, it’s a familiar face,” Nan Muran gently patted Xuan Yue’s back, her tone soft. She then nodded toward Chen Dong to acknowledge him.
