The ordinary soldiers on the western city defense wall, who were continuously attacking the zombie army, were the first to notice the anomaly on the other side: “These zombies have no targets anymore.”
Everyone was immediately in an uproar, their previously serious expressions loosening significantly. They had finally seen hope in this battle.
For everyone else, the change was instant. Only Chen Jianguo’s and Han Yingting’s teams clearly sensed that all of this was the result of a coordinated effort between Nan Muran and Si Ye.
And of course, the three mutated plants that had just returned to Nan Muran’s left wrist.
Nan Muran glanced at the piles of various colored crystal cores in the space. Though none of them were of particularly high level, there were quite a few. She raised an eyebrow slightly. These three little guys really were starting to develop an eye for things.
“Commander Chen, just handle the zombies around here,” Nan Muran said calmly, showing no sign of taking credit.
Chen Jianguo instinctively looked at his watch—it had been eighteen minutes.
So, Nan Muran and Si Ye, working together, had spent eighteen minutes locating the commanders and all the evolved humans behind the zombie army and eliminating them all.
How had they done it? What kind of power did they possess to carry out such a terrifying feat?
Compared to the life-and-death battles on the battlefield, the ability to stand here and annihilate the enemy without even moving was far more intimidating.
Si Ye gently nudged Chen Jianguo, who was staring at his watch in a daze: “Commander, the zombie army outside the city is still there.”
Chen Jianguo snapped out of it. Though the zombies that hadn’t reached the defense wall yet were aimlessly wandering and posed no threat, the zombies that had already reached the wall had begun to gather and attack, drawn by the scent of humans. They needed to be dealt with quickly.
“Han Yingting, have the fire-type evolved humans clear the slope formed by the zombies under the city,” Chen Jianguo immediately ordered as the zombie army advanced.
Soon, fireballs of various sizes struck the zombie pile, igniting large groups of zombies. Even so, some burning zombies continued to push forward, their relentless, brainless drive making them a headache for everyone.
Before long, the stench of burning flesh filled the air, nauseating and unbearable.
Si Ye looked at Nan Muran, who was frowning, and immediately looked to Chen Jianguo: “Commander, we should go back now.”
Chen Jianguo nodded to Nan Muran: “Thank you for today.”
“You’re welcome. There are people here who are very important to me,” Nan Muran said, not a person to meddle unnecessarily, but certainly not cold-hearted or indifferent either.
Today, there were no choices for Chen Jianguo and the others, and she had no other options either. After all, her family—Seven Jin, the Eagle’s family, and the Guo family—were all within the defense wall.
Suddenly, Seven Jin, who had been silent, tugged at Nan Muran’s hand.
In situations like this, it usually meant urgent and important information, so Nan Muran immediately lowered her head.
“Sister, someone from the Ouyang family is outside the western city base. They should have a large warehouse near Mount Ling,” Seven Jin’s mind flashed to a scene three days later, where the Ouyang family used food to gain the trust of the base’s people.
He couldn’t understand how this related to today’s zombie siege, but he immediately told Nan Muran.
Nan Muran glanced at the wandering zombie army below the city wall: “Si Ye, we need to leave the city.”
“I’ll have the gates opened for you,” Chen Jianguo said without hesitation, seeing no need for further questions.
Nan Muran was taken aback upon hearing this. The zombie army outside the city hadn’t fully dispersed yet, and opening the gates at this point didn’t seem like a wise choice.
Chen Jianguo, sensing her concern, reassured her: “Don’t worry. The city’s gates have five layers, each with a different mechanical system, so they can prevent zombies from getting in.”
“Thank you,” Nan Muran said, grateful but not shy about expressing it.
Seven Jin, Xuan Yue, and Tank followed them down the defense wall.
When they reached the front city gates, Nan Muran hesitated about whether to go back to the parking lot to get a car or take one from her space.
In the end, the guard who had escorted them handed Nan Muran a car key: “Commander Chen asked me to give this to Miss Nan as a token of gratitude.”
“An off-road Humvee?” Nan Muran’s excitement was evident as she thought about the camouflage color. When she saw the vehicle, she couldn’t help but get even more excited.
This was the kind of dream car that money couldn’t buy. She had always liked this camouflage color even more than the military green one, but never had the chance to own one.
Nan Muran climbed into the driver’s seat, her voice filled with clear joy: “I’ll drive.”
Si Ye, who had initially planned to drive himself due to fatigue, smiled lightly as he saw her excitement.
Since the apocalypse, Nan Muran had never taken the initiative to drive when traveling with them. This was the first time, which showed just how much she liked this car.
“Wow, the view is incredible,” Nan Muran exclaimed as she started the engine.
Si Ye, familiar with the benefits of the car, just pulled the seatbelt over her and fastened it, smiling as he said, “Let’s go.”
Realizing she might have gotten a little too excited, Nan Muran stuck her tongue out.
As they approached the defense wall’s gates, the first heavy steel door slowly began to rise. With each gate they approached, it would automatically rise, and as soon as they passed, it would immediately fall again.
There was a 20-meter gap between each of the five gates, and each gate was made of 30-centimeter-thick steel plates, making them seem nearly impossible to breach.
“No wonder that man in the black robe never thought about attacking the gates and the defense wall,” Nan Muran commented, gazing at the last steel gate, nearly the thickness of an arm.
Si Ye nodded: “The military’s security base is naturally built to the highest standards. The safety factor is not to be underestimated.”
Once they passed the last gate, Nan Muran suddenly accelerated, using the vehicle to plow through the zombies, creating a path. Some zombies continued toward the gates, reaching the fourth gate.
As the last gate slammed shut, a sudden burst of fire appeared within the 20-meter space, instantly incinerating all the zombies that had entered.
“That’s pretty intense,” one of the soldiers on Han Yingting’s team, who was watching from the wall, remarked as he saw the off-road vehicle fearless and swiftly cutting through the zombie army.
“Skill makes people bold. It’s not about being reckless, it’s confidence,” another soldier responded.
Chen Jianguo breathed a sigh of relief as he watched the off-road vehicle smash through the zombies: “Yingting, you’re right. Their strength is far more terrifying than we can imagine.”
