Apocalypse: Living the Good Life Deep in the Mountains Chapter 39: Hunting Down the Mountain

“Ranran, look, the rain has stopped outside,” Bai Mei, who had already gone for a walk early in the morning, said cheerfully, just as Jiamo did.

Nan Muran gazed out at the lush green trees and the bright sunshine, feeling much better. She smiled and nodded, then looked at them. “It’s going to rain again in a few days.

Brother Wu, Sister Mei, please stay indoors these next few days.”

She was worried that Jiamo might take Bai Mei outside for some fresh air.

In addition, there were hydroponic vegetables on the mountain’s hot spring side, and Jiamo would go there every morning to pick them. It would be troublesome if they were caught in acid rain.

After spending some time together, the couple had come to understand Nan Muran more: “Ranran, is something going to happen?”

“You’ll know once the next rain stops,” Nan Muran didn’t reveal too much but also didn’t want to hide anything from them.

Sure enough, after a week of sunny weather, dark clouds gathered again, bringing a suffocating, oppressive feeling.

This time, the weather only gave people less than half an hour of reaction time before the rain began to pour down.

Many people who had gone out to gather supplies didn’t make it back home in time, and were soaked to the bone. Some chose to stay where they were and planned to wait until the rain stopped completely before heading home.

Compared to the two months of rain from the last storm, this one came quickly and left quickly, but it had a foul, sour smell. Soon, people noticed something strange. Those who had been caught in the rain felt a stinging, itchy sensation on their skin.

They went from feeling uneasy at first to suffering from high fevers that wouldn’t subside.

In just one night, the mutations began.

Screams of terror echoed through the apartment buildings as many were bitten by their loved ones in their sleep, turning into the living dead.

In some families, parents and grandparents couldn’t bear to harm their mutated children, but in the end, they were also bitten and turned into zombies.

After more than two months of food scarcity, human loss hadn’t exceeded ten percent.

But this sudden acid rain mutation pushed that figure to over fifty percent.

Once the rain cleared, the city started to see waves of zombies, both large and small. The surviving humans realized that the dead—those who had been caught in the acid rain—had all turned into zombies.

They had no souls, couldn’t think, and moved slowly. They could smell humans from a distance and were attracted to loud noises. Any human that was bitten would mutate immediately upon seeing blood.

After grasping the pattern, people began trying to adapt to the harsh new reality.

On the third day of mutation, Nan Muran felt a wild thirst surge through her body. She knew it was a reaction from her special abilities.

Her powers, especially plant-based and psychic abilities, had plummeted from level eight in her past life to the early stage of level two in this one. She was struggling to adapt, as were her abilities.

Feeling the changes in the world’s energy, her powers transformed into three hungry children, eager to grow and become stronger.

“Brother Wu, I need to go hunting,” Nan Muran said as she changed into a dark gray sports outfit, packed her bag, and prepared to leave.

“You go with Ranran,” Bai Mei, sitting in a wheelchair, said without hesitation. “The villa is safe. As long as I don’t go outside, there’s no danger. You can rest easy.”

Jiamo understood. He knew that they couldn’t stay hidden forever, so although he was still uneasy, he agreed. “No matter what happens, when we return, don’t go outside alone.”

“Don’t worry,” Bai Mei replied gently.

The two of them, along with the dog, prepared to leave.

Just as they reached the door, Dafu jumped into Nan Muran’s arms, clearly wanting to go along.

“Stay here with Sister Mei,” Nan Muran firmly refused the little creature’s request.

But Dafu was clearly unwilling, and Nan Muran was a little surprised. Dafu and Tank were unusually smart, especially Dafu. Not only did the cat have the courage to go outside, but it seemed to understand her words.

“You don’t have to worry, let it go if it wants to go. I can be fine at home alone.”

“How can you stay alone at home?” Nan Muran frowned.

Bai Mei helplessly said, “I’m at home eating snacks and watching ‘Know It All,’ how could I possibly feel bored?”

Seeing her content, Nan Muran agreed, though still feeling uneasy.

After thinking for a moment, she took out milk tea, fruit tea, coffee, and other drinks and placed them on the coffee table. She then took out various snacks, fruits, and treats. “Sister Mei, see if there’s anything else you want?”

Although food like rice, noodles, fruits, vegetables, and fresh meat had never been lacking in the house, both Bai Mei and Jiamo guessed that Nan Muran must have a special stash hidden somewhere. But seeing her take out so many things from thin air, they were still taken aback.

“You…?” Bai Mei on the wheelchair stuttered.

“I have a huge storage space,” Nan Muran said casually as she handed Bai Mei her favorite red tea latte. “For you, Sister Mei.”

“My God, Ranran, you’re like a treasure chest!” Bai Mei was entirely unfazed by how unusual this seemed and was genuinely happy for her.

Jiamo, recovering from his shock, also felt relieved.

With these supplies, Nan Muran wouldn’t have to struggle too much in the apocalypse.

Even so, when they got outside, Jiamo was still stunned after seeing Nan Muran take out a car out of nowhere.

Having experienced countless life-or-death moments and seen all kinds of strange things, he still found it hard to get used to Nan Muran’s existence.

When he saw the car, his eyes widened. Every man loved a good car, but this one—everyone’s dream car—was a marauder. “This car?”

“I got it for zero from the Asian car show,” Nan Muran, amused by Jiamo’s reaction, tossed him the keys. “You can drive it.”

Once in the car and starting it up, Jiamo’s excitement was palpable.

“I also have a Kalman King, Hummer, Wrangler, Tank. I’ll bring them out for you another day,” Nan Muran buckled her seatbelt.

Jiamo’s heart raced even faster. “When we come back, I want to drive the Hummer.”

Nan Muran, surprised by Jiamo’s enthusiasm, raised an eyebrow. “You really like cars that much?”

“Especially,” Jiamo said without hesitation.

Nan Muran nodded in understanding. “Alright.”

“Where are we going first?”

“To Nanshan Yunyuan.” Nan Muran wasn’t sure about the situation after the acid rain, so she chose the not-too-crowded Nanshan villa area. It would also give her a chance to check on Brother Guo’s situation.

This time, she needed to discuss future matters with Guo Fei. After all, she had arranged for him to go to Nanshan Yunyuan early in the morning, knowing it would be turned into a safe base.

On the other hand, Nan Muran believed that Guo Fei, with his abilities, should not just settle for stability—he should do more.

As they drove down the mountain, everything seemed normal. But when the car entered the mountain-ring road at the foot of the mountain, a few zombies aimlessly wandered along the roadside.

Hearing the sound of the car approaching and sensing human scent, the zombies seemed to be drawn towards them, moving in their direction.
