It has been almost three months since the end of the world began. Along the way, the people they encountered mostly had pale faces, so it was strange that the little girl in front of them still looked so vibrant.
Not to mention that this was the end of the world, even before the apocalypse, such a pretty girl was a rare sight.
Nan Muran nodded in agreement: “We don’t live here, so we’re not too sure about the situation. But my brother and sister-in-law live nearby. How about I take you inside, and you can talk to them?”
In this life, Nan Muran’s plan for Guo Fei in the early stages was for him to find an opportunity to latch onto a big, strong figure.
Chen Jianguo, the future head of the Western City Safety Base’s military forces, one of the most influential figures in the country, had literally walked right up to their door.
If he didn’t latch on now, it would be a shame.
Most importantly, based on Guo Fei’s style of handling things, these two would definitely get along well.
Chen Jianguo was clearly taken aback when he heard her words.
They had asked for help along the way, but the only person brave enough to invite them into their home was this young lady.
Although surprised, he agreed to enter for the sake of their mission: “Alright.”
Once inside the villa, when Chen Jianguo saw the chubby, well-fed child in the living room, he couldn’t help but take a second look.
His own son was a little older than the child, but he looked a lot smaller in comparison. It was hard not to feel heartbroken.
When he saw the plump child playing with the tank and the big, lucky dog nearby, Chen Jianguo’s usually stoic face almost couldn’t hold its composure.
What kind of family was this? The apocalypse had hit, and people outside could hardly get enough to eat, yet their cat and dog were so well-fed.
Guo Fei stared, somewhat dumbfounded, at Chen Jianguo and his guards, who had been brought in by Nan Muran.
“This is Comrade Chen… from the HB military district. He wanted to understand the situation of the South Mountain Cloud Estate,” Nan Muran introduced Chen Jianguo to Guo Fei, trusting that he would catch the key point.
Perhaps because of the military uniform, Lin Jiajia didn’t think too much and hurriedly invited them to sit down.
Guo Fei, with a slight gesture from Nan Muran, caught on to the importance of the situation. It seemed that this man would play a crucial role in his future plans, maybe even a decisive one.
As he smiled and invited Chen Jianguo and his guard to sit, he gently took his wife Lin Jiajia’s hand.
The couple had always had good chemistry, and Lin Jiajia immediately understood—this officer was someone her husband wanted to get close to.
The guard who had come along with them was surprised when Lin Jiajia handed him tea with such warmth. At a time like this, being able to offer tea—it really made him wonder what kind of family this was.
Chen Jianguo was also stunned but didn’t show it.
After talking for a while, Guo Fei understood the purpose of Chen Jianguo’s visit.
Since he was eager to make connections, Guo Fei didn’t hide anything and shared all the details of the villa area he had learned over the past couple of months.
Meanwhile, Nan Muran and Jia Wu were bored out of their minds and stepped outside for some fresh air.
They encountered some roaming zombies on the way, and without hesitation, both of them shot them in the head and collected the crystal cores.
Just then, they heard a woman’s cries for help coming from a nearby villa: “Help us, there’s a zombie in our house…”
Jia Wu and Nan Muran didn’t rush in immediately but first took a look at the situation inside.
There was indeed a zombie in the house, but it was clearly a child, and its movements were very slow.
The people asking for help were a middle-aged woman and an unusually large man. It was rare to see someone so overweight after three months of the apocalypse.
This two-on-one situation, with such a strong build, they could easily take care of the zombie themselves without needing anyone’s help.
Not far away, several soldiers in a military jeep had heard the cries and were quickly heading toward the sound.
“Are you two deaf or something? Hurry up and save them!” The man inside the villa saw Nan Muran and Jia Wu, who had just killed zombies efficiently, but now weren’t moving. He cursed loudly.
Nan Muran frowned. It was rare to see someone being so rude while asking for help: “What a jerk.”
“We’re not going,” Jia Wu calmly refused.
At this moment, the soldiers had already arrived and were preparing to enter and rescue the people inside.
But Nan Muran stepped forward and blocked their way: “He’s yelling so loudly, that means he has plenty of strength. There’s no need to rush in and save him.”
“Miss, the situation inside is dangerous. You shouldn’t stay here, please go back home. It’s not safe outside,” the officer in charge softened his tone when he saw Nan Muran was a girl.
The man inside also saw the soldiers running over: “Are you all dead or something? Can’t you see I’m in danger? Do you know what ‘serving the people’ means? I pay so many taxes every year and this is the kind of useless soldiers I get!”
The soldiers turned red with anger, but they didn’t give up on their mission to save the people inside.
“You still want to save people like him?”
“It’s our duty,” the officer said firmly.
Nan Muran nodded and moved aside.
However, just as she stepped aside, the couple inside suddenly felt intense headaches, and their arms, which had been holding off the zombie, went weak.
The zombie took the opportunity to bite the man’s neck.
The man’s screams were horrendous, and the zombie continued to pursue the now-weak woman.
“Quick, save them!” Seeing the situation, the officer rushed toward the villa, but unfortunately, the door was too sturdy.
In the end, they could only climb through the window.
After dealing with the young zombie inside, they brought out the middle-aged woman, who had not been bitten.
As soon as they exited the villa, the woman went wild, struggling furiously: “My husband, save my husband!”
“Your husband has been bitten by a zombie. He will turn soon,” one of the soldiers, holding the woman, gently explained. If it weren’t for considering her feelings, they would have dealt with her not-yet-turned husband earlier.
The woman instantly went berserk: “You’re lying! He was fine just now! Are you afraid of the danger and don’t want to save him? How can you be so cold-blooded as soldiers?!”
“It’s not that we don’t want to save him, it’s that we can’t,” the officer explained.
“Soldiers who won’t save people? Look, everyone come look!”
Looking at the unreasonable woman on the ground, the soldiers were at a loss for what to do. They had tried to save her, but it seemed like they had made a mistake in their approach.
Suddenly, with a loud bang, the villa door swung open.
Nan Muran turned to look at the woman who was still staring dumbfounded at the ground, her voice as cold as ice: “Well, the zombie inside has been dealt with. You can go in and save your husband now.”
Nan Muran’s action stunned the woman on the ground and also startled the soldiers around her.
“Hurry up,” Nan Muran said as she stepped forward, grabbing the woman by her collar and preparing to throw her back inside.
The woman, scared out of her wits, began crying and struggling like crazy: “I don’t want to go, I’m not saving him anymore… Let me go, I’m not going in… I’ll die in there!”
Only then did Nan Muran coldly drop the woman back to the ground.
The soldiers who had come to their senses were instantly furious. It turned out she knew that going in would mean certain death.
