Chapter 55: Moving to the 20th Floor
The other three people also noticed the problem.
Once the internet was gone, it became truly terrifying—nothing could make up for that kind of fear.
“What do we do now?”
Zhang Kaiyang placed his phone on the coffee table so everyone could see the screen.
“Move.”
Song Yi typed just one word, and the room fell into silence.
At a time like this, where could they move to? Not only was it hard to even get out, but there was no guarantee anywhere else was safe.
“Are you serious, Brother Song?”
Jiang Yuan looked at Song Yi and suddenly understood what he meant.
“If you’re not afraid, then move to the 20th floor.”
But the 20th floor was occupied—there were no vacant units.
Ye Mianmian thought about it, her eyes widening unconsciously.
“Sister Yuan, you don’t mean…?”
Jiang Yuan looked at her and nodded.
Zhang Kaiyang also realized what she meant, but there was no time to argue now—he was calculating the feasibility.
Knock knock knock…
A knock on the door interrupted their thoughts. All four turned their attention to the sound.
Song Yi was the first to get up and walk to the door.
“Speak.”
Sun Yian, the one leading the group, almost had his nose hit by the door but didn’t dare lose his temper. He could only patiently explain:
“Where’s Jiang Yuan? We agree to rent the boat. Here’s 20,000 yuan…”
Hearing this, she squeezed through from inside and reached out to take the money.
“So where’s our boat?”
“Wait a bit. Come up with me to get it.”
After saying that, Jiang Yuan closed the door again.
“Let’s go. We’ll head up first. Zhang Kaiyang, bring your tools.”
“Alright!”
The four no longer dared to act alone, so they moved as a group.
When they opened the door again, Sun Yian was waiting with a hopeful expression.
“Let’s go, you all go up first…”
Jiang Yuan, ever cautious, insisted that his group go first.
What if they took the opportunity to raid Zhang Kaiyang’s apartment?
“You…”
Sun Yian was unhappy but couldn’t argue. He had no choice but to do as she said and led his group upstairs.
They stopped on the 20th floor, letting Jiang Yuan’s team go up further alone.
Song Yi was about to go get his kayak when Jiang Yuan stopped him.
“No need. I have one too. Use mine.”
She couldn’t make money off others’ equipment—especially without their consent. That would be crossing the line.
With that, she went back, brought out her kayak, and handed it over.
“Here, Lawyer Sun, let’s be clear—if anything happens to this kayak, I won’t go after anyone else. I’ll come straight for you. I know you live in 0601, with your elderly mother and two kids—a boy and a girl in elementary school, one in sixth grade, the other in third.”
Sun Yian was shocked.
He hadn’t expected Jiang Yuan to have investigated him.
“Alright, don’t worry…”
“I want my kayak back by 2 p.m. tomorrow, in perfect condition. Otherwise, I’ll come to your home to get it.”
“Don’t worry, I promise it’ll come back safe and sound.”
With that, Sun Yian left quickly, leading his group downstairs.
Jiang Yuan turned to Zhang Kaiyang and Ye Mianmian:
“Think it over. If you’re up for it, let’s go take a look downstairs.”
“Hell yeah, let’s go. The dead aren’t as dangerous as the living. Let’s move.”
Ye Mianmian looked serious too. On the way up earlier, she’d already made up her mind.
On the 20th floor, if she ran into danger, she could still count on Jiang Yuan and Song Yi.
But if she stayed where she was, once they finished dealing with Zhang Kaiyang, she would be next.
Stealing supplies was one thing—but if they had darker intentions, both she and her grandma would be at serious risk.
“I’ll move too.”
“Alright, then let’s go check it out…”
Zhang Kaiyang opened the door. Inside was a mess. Clearly, the two men who lived there hadn’t been clean or organized.
There were still some food supplies in the kitchen—rice, flour, oil, and even sausages.
“Wow, some unexpected loot. These two stocked up on a lot. Look—noodles!”
Zhang Kaiyang proudly showed off the finds.
Apartment 2002 had the same layout as Song Yi’s—two bedrooms, a decent-sized living room, one kitchen, one bathroom, and a balcony.
The interior was basic, clearly a rental, with only the simplest furniture.
“I’ll live here. What about you?”
Zhang Kaiyang looked at Ye Mianmian. It was their joint situation, so he had to ask.
“I’ll stay here too. It’s safer…”
“Then we’re roommates now. Let’s take care of each other!”
Ye Mianmian smiled and went to check the rooms.
“You take the bigger one—your grandma’s with you. I’ll take the smaller one.”
“Thanks a lot.”
She was pleased. Sharing a roof meant they’d have to get along well.
Although they’d gone out on supply runs together, they hadn’t lived together long-term.
Besides, she and her grandma weren’t nearly as strong as an adult man.
She felt uneasy, but had no better options.
After the arrangements, Song Yi suggested they move right away. Jiang Yuan agreed—no point in waiting.
Those people thought they’d easily find supplies outside. But if they didn’t, they’d target them again.
Better to pack now and feel secure.
“Let’s go to the 9th floor first, then the 11th. Move!”
The four moved quickly. Just as they stepped out, Jiang Buzhi came running down.
“Girl, I’m coming with you.”
He’d seen everything on the surveillance monitor.
“Great, Dad. Come help us out!”
Jiang Yuan knew that if she didn’t let him join, he’d worry nonstop.
On the 9th floor, many supplies were still packed—easy to carry out.
Jiang Yuan and Ye Mianmian focused on the rest of the supplies while Zhang Kaiyang went to gather his personal belongings.
Luckily, there were lots of large woven bags—just one was enough for a full set of luggage. That made things much easier.
The fewer trips, the safer they’d be.
Zhang Kaiyang didn’t have much personal stuff. Within half an hour, he was done and started hauling things upstairs.
“Mianmian, don’t come on the next trip. Go back and pack up. We’ll come straight to your place after.”
“Okay, Sister Yuan.”
Girls always had more stuff—and probably some things they’d rather others not see.
No need to make it awkward. Jiang Yuan understood perfectly.
Ye Mianmian headed back while the rest continued moving, not in too much of a rush.
By the time they finished, she had everything ready too.
It was Jiang Yuan’s first time meeting Ye Mianmian’s grandmother—a small, skinny old lady with graying hair.
But her eyes were kind—clearly someone who had suffered a lot in her younger days.
“All my things are in the room. I’ve placed the rest along this side of the living room…”
“Alright, I’ll put everything there for now. We’ll sort it out after we’re done moving.”
