The fire was growing more intense. To prevent the entire laboratory from burning down, the squad leader had no choice but to frantically fetch water to extinguish the flames.
Sweat dripped down his face as he worked tirelessly. When he finally saw the people he had sent to retrieve the fire suppression equipment returning, he lit up with hope and eagerly asked,
“Did you get it? Hurry up and put out the fire! What are you waiting for… Wait, why do you all look like that?”
Noticing their empty hands and hesitant expressions, the squad leader instinctively tried to push past them to see if they were hiding the equipment behind their backs.
“Captain, we went over there to call for help, but there was no one! We don’t know where they all went.”
“The same thing happened on our side. It’s like they just vanished into thin air.”
“What about the fire suppression equipment and sprinklers?!”
The squad leader roared, “Where are the things I told you to bring?!”
Alpha hesitated, his expression troubled. “They disappeared. Just like the people. There’s nothing left.”
Nothing left… The squad leader, drenched in sweat, was filled with despair.
“How could this happen…”
Lauri was thinking the same thing—how could this happen?!
When the base alarm sounded, he had been with Lord Garna, inspecting the supply trucks.
The entire base relied on these trucks for food, clothing, and essentials. Earlier, Ji Laili had contacted him, saying there was a small issue.
None of the cigarettes Garna had requested had been purchased.
Lauri was stunned when he heard this. He checked the list and saw that, sure enough, the cigarettes weren’t on it!
To make matters worse, Garna had been right next to him when Ji Laili sent the message. The moment he saw the news, his cold, piercing gaze was enough to make Lauri want to dig his own grave.
Summoning his best acting skills, Lauri exploded in fake anger, “How could they be so incompetent?!”
“I definitely wrote it down! They must have forgotten to buy it. My lord, I’ll go yell at them right now!”
Lauri stomped his foot and prepared to rush out—only to have his collar grabbed. A deep voice said, “We’ll go together.”
Lauri’s face fell as he led Garna toward the supply team. But just as they were about to arrive, the base’s smoke alarm blared.
Before Lauri could react, Garna’s brows furrowed, his expression turning ice-cold as he immediately strode back toward the base.
“My lord, wait for me!”
Lauri ran after him. “Lord Garna, we’re not going there anymore?”
“Or should I contact the person in charge first, and we go later?”
“Idiot!”
Garna snapped impatiently, “Can’t you tell this is a diversion?!”
Lauri: “Huh?”
If this guy wasn’t such a dedicated worker for the Empire—doing twelve-hour shifts every day for years—Garna would’ve killed him already.
Getting lured away by such a basic trick was an absolute disgrace.
Garna quickly headed toward the laboratory. He didn’t know where the alarm had been triggered, but it didn’t matter. His priority was ensuring the safety of the laboratory and the Omega, Wen Qiushui.
Lauri jogged behind him.
But before they could reach the lab, they ran into a group of Alphas.
The moment they saw Garna, their faces lit up with joy.
Led by Eugene, this usually overlooked security squad was now bursting with enthusiasm. Armed with weapons, they charged straight into Garna’s private quarters.
Thanks to Zhai Yifei’s reminder, they had even brought all the fire suppression equipment and sprinklers, ready to rescue Garna from the supposed “undercover agents.”
When they found no one inside, the security team was deeply disappointed.
But seeing Garna now, their excitement reached an all-time high.
“My lord!”
“Lord Garna!”
“We’re here! My lord, don’t be afraid!”
Garna: ?
What the hell are these idiots talking about?
Before he could question them, the security team, reacting instinctively to the smoke drifting from the lab, activated the fire suppression system.
With a loud hiss, a spray of white powder covered Garna from head to toe.
Lauri, just about to speak, accidentally inhaled a mouthful of powder and immediately started coughing violently.
Before they could even wipe the powder off their faces, there was another loud whoosh as the sprinklers turned on, drenching both of them in water.
One minute later, the sprinklers shut off, revealing two soaking wet figures, now thoroughly marinated.
Eugene admired the sight of the two miserable men, trying to push forward for a better look—only to be yanked back by Zhai Yifei.
Before he was dragged away, he still remembered his mission and loudly shouted,
“Catch the undercover agent! Save the lord!”
“The one with dark circles under his eyes must be the spy!”
“Pah! Pah!” Lauri spat out a mouthful of powder-tainted saliva and widened his eyes in disbelief.
“Who’s spreading rumors?! Step forward and explain yourself! Hey, hey—wait, what are you guys doing?! Ah—!”
Several figures lunged at Lauri, piling on top of him as the security team scrambled to be the first to “capture” him.
“Get off! He’s mine!”
“Nonsense! I grabbed him first! Lord Garna, you saw that, right?!”
“My lord, this guy is lying! My hand was clearly the first to grab Lauri’s hair!”
The scene descended into utter chaos.
Garna wiped the water off his face, finally reaching his limit. With a furious roar, he commanded,
“SHUT UP—!”
An overwhelming Alpha pheromone exploded from him, filling the air with the suffocating scent of tobacco.
The sheer intensity of secondhand smoke exposure knocked the entire group of Alphas flat.
Garna let out a chilling smirk and said darkly,
“You all… want to die?”
—
Meanwhile, the security squad, drenched in sweat from putting out the fire, continued their efforts. Their rhythmic chants of “One, two, one! One, two, one!” kept their morale up as they struggled to transport water.
Wen Qiushui had joined them, sleeves rolled up, carrying an iron bucket with unsteady steps. Her face was smudged with soot, her long black hair disheveled, and her white lab coat half-soaked.
Clenching her teeth, she splashed water onto the flames. The fire fizzled into thick smoke.
“Cough, cough.” Wen Qiushui waved away the smoke, coughing as she did so.
Thanks to their efforts, the fire was finally beginning to die down.
Those trapped inside were likely trying to rescue themselves as well. If that was the case, she had no reason to give up.
Wen Qiushui wasn’t worried about the researchers—they were selfish and would ensure their own safety first.
She was concerned about someone else.
Taking a deep breath, she lifted another bucket with trembling fingers.
Seeing her determination, the other Alphas gritted their teeth and kept going.
No way could they be weaker than an Omega.
Even those who used to secretly criticize Wen Qiushui were starting to see her in a new light.
The chain of water transport remained unbroken, but that didn’t mean they could handle yet another smoke alarm!
When the alarm blared again, the security squad leader nearly broke down.
“Not again!”
“Where the hell is the fire this time?! Damn it, I feel like I’m about to self-combust!”
