Chapter 131: You Said You Wanted a Divorce

Our neighbor, Sister Hu, is named Hu Xiujie.

She married a young intellectual who came down from Beijing. He was quiet and from a wealthy family. Unlike other young intellectuals who had to pass the college entrance exam to return to the city, he had other opportunities and was sent back to the city in his second year in the countryside.

However, he didn’t leave. Instead, he stayed. Later, when the college entrance exam was restored, he took it and passed. Only then did he leave.

He didn’t abandon Hu Xiujie. He took her with him.

Hu Yao had been gone for so long and hadn’t been back for so long. When she asked about her family, they didn’t know her situation and even cursed and gossiped about her.

The letter Hu Yao sent her before hadn’t been replied to.

Hu Yao thought of many possibilities, but she couldn’t verify any of them.

But she came back this time.

Her appearance had changed a lot. She wasn’t as gentle and bright as before. Her thin figure looked a little haggard.

“Yaoyao.”

Hu Xiujie came specifically to find Hu Yao. She was three years older than Hu Yao and they had grown up together. They had similar treatment at home, which made them feel a kinship. Hu Xiujie truly treated Hu Yao as her own sister.

Although her husband was good to her all these years, the rest of her husband’s family didn’t look down on her. She said she married well, but only she knew what it was really like.

She was a rural girl who married a cultured and educated city man, a man from Beijing. How many people envied her, how many people were jealous of her.

She went with the man she loved to a faraway place, to a new family, with a heart full of joy, thinking that she would have a new life.

But that was just her fantasy. She couldn’t fit in. No matter how hard she tried to please them, no matter how hard she worked, they didn’t look down on her. They denied her with a light tone, every word piercing her heart.

Her husband’s initial indulgence and tolerance gradually changed. Even the child they had together followed suit, looking down on her, their mother.

The accumulated contradictions and suppression in her husband’s family grew more and more. Hu Xiujie argued with her husband over various matters. Their relationship was no longer what it used to be.

Her husband’s family had always disliked her family. Hu Xiujie was also annoyed by them, who didn’t care about her when she was young but clung to her after she married. However, her husband’s family used them to talk about her, which was different.

She saw Hu Yao’s letter, surprised and worried. This time, she ignored her husband’s repeated reprimands and came back.

Hu Xiujie had actually wanted to come back for a long time. She had been away for so long and never felt like she had a home. Occasionally, she would think about her childhood joys and feel a bit of warmth.

Beijing was a bustling place. The people there were open-minded and women could achieve great things. But that was for those who already came from good families. For them, it was just a laughing matter.

“My mother-in-law has always stopped me from having too much contact with my family. I only discovered the letter you wrote me a few days ago.” Hu Xiujie looked at the changed Hu Yao and was slightly stunned. But when she thought about the words in her letter, she felt a pang of sympathy.

“I didn’t know what happened to you after I left. They actually sold you to Jiang Han!” Hu Xiujie frowned. Her impression of Jiang Han was still from a few years ago.

Hu Yao, who had been surprised and stunned when she first saw her, was about to invite her in when she heard her words. She thought back to the contents of the letter she had written to her a few months ago and didn’t know how to explain it for a while.

“Sister Xiujie, actually Jiang Han didn’t…”

“I came back specifically to find you, Yaoyao. You said you wanted to take your child and leave Jiang Han, leave here… I’ve already asked around for you before I came back. There’s a silk weaving factory that’s still hiring workers. I know a lady who can introduce you… but now…” Hu Xiujie interrupted her, talking, and finally her eyes fell on her bulging belly, hesitant.

“It’s okay. Come with me first. I’ll help you. Where’s your son?” Hu Xiujie looked at her with the same warmth and gentleness as before.

Hu Xiujie thought about Hu Yao being wronged by a wicked man like Jiang Han. She felt sorry for her. He didn’t just have Hu Yao as his woman. Hu Yao was bought by him. Even if Hu Yao was beautiful, men’s novelty would wear off and he wouldn’t be good to her. The letter Hu Yao wrote to her said a lot.

Hu Yao met her eyes and felt warmth in her heart. She had always been so good to her, so caring for her, and came back to find her because of her plea for help.

She had caused her trouble again.

“Sister Xiujie, I…” Hu Yao was about to say that it was all a misunderstanding and that she didn’t want to leave now.

As she started to speak, she saw Jiang Han’s figure in the distance. His face was dark and gloomy, as if he had heard everything Hu Xiujie said.

He had gone out early in the morning, saying he was going to the county to do something. Now he was back so quickly.

Hu Yao saw his gloomy eyes and unconsciously clenched her fist.

His sudden appearance startled Hu Xiujie as well. She had been used to seeing gentle and polite people for so many years. Seeing Jiang Han, who was so fierce and vicious, she couldn’t help but feel a little scared.

After all, Hu Yao was his woman. She was helping Hu Yao escape now. There was no reason to speak of on either side. Hu Xiujie gritted her teeth and still protected Hu Yao.

Jiang Han’s face was dark and gloomy. He grabbed her and threw her out the door without a word.

“Sister Xiujie!” Hu Yao exclaimed and quickly walked out the door.

“Are you trying to die, Hu Yao!” Jiang Han glared at her, grabbed her, slammed the door shut, and roared at her.

With a loud bang, he slammed the door shut.

Hu Yao was afraid that he would do something to Hu Xiujie in his anger. She hurriedly knocked on the door.

The next moment, the door opened and his tall figure stepped in again. His face was still very ugly.

“You’re good, Hu Yao! Running away with Jiang Fuchao? You really dare! I’m going to break your legs today!” He grabbed her chin. Thinking about what the woman had said earlier, he felt a surge of anger that was hard to suppress.

He stared at her with fierce and gloomy eyes. Hu Yao met his gaze for a few seconds and realized that even though she was facing him like this, she wasn’t that scared anymore.

She glanced at the things he had thrown on the ground when he pulled her in and her heart was filled with mixed emotions.

He came back to buy her horseshoe cake. She had said yesterday that she wanted to eat it.

His actions towards her were far better than his fierce and intimidating words. Anything she mentioned casually, he would remember and fulfill.

“I didn’t want to run away.” Hu Yao lifted her moist, bright eyes to look at him. Under his angry, gloomy gaze, she reached out and hugged him.

Obviously, as soon as she spoke and hugged him, his expression softened slightly.

“You’re very good to me, I won’t run away.” She looked at him seriously.

“Before, I wrote a letter to Sister Axiu saying I wanted to leave, because at that time Xu Xuzhu said she was pregnant with your child, and you said you wanted to divorce me. I slapped Chaochao, I didn’t know what you would do to me, I was scared so I wanted to leave.” She explained to him in a low voice, then emphasized.

“You said you wanted to divorce me.”
