Chapter 164: Wait, I’ll Go to Sleep with You
The sun shone even brighter and warmer after the rain. After breakfast, the family of three ate together. Jiang Han chopped the wood he brought back and quickly reinforced the cowshed. After finishing, he gave his wife and son a few instructions before going out.
There were still some odds and ends to mend at home. Hu Yao sent Jiang Xiaochao out to play and took out her needle and thread.
Time passed quickly. Jiang Xiaochao came back from playing with his friends. He had gone mushroom picking and came back bouncing and jumping with a small basket of mushrooms.
“Mommy, they’re so pretty! For Daddy.” He pointed to the colorful mushrooms and told Hu Yao.
Hu Yao looked at the poisonous mushrooms and was silent for a moment.
Actually, he didn’t have to be so good to his father.
After a moment of silence, she patiently explained to him that the mushrooms were poisonous and that he must never pick or eat them.
“You’ll die!” Jiang Xiaochao was startled.
“Yes!” Hu Yao nodded seriously.
Immediately, Jiang Xiaochao pouted and ran out to the yard, hugging his little cow and puppy.
He had fed them a couple of the mushrooms when he brought them back. Now, his little cow and puppy were a bit listless.
“They’re going to die!” Jiang Xiaochao started to feel sad and anxiously asked Hu Yao to take them to the doctor.
One of the puppies was even foaming at the mouth. Hu Yao was also startled and went to find the village veterinarian to come and see them.
Fortunately, Jiang Xiaochao hadn’t fed them many poisonous mushrooms and the toxicity wasn’t very strong. After a lot of fuss, they managed to save the life of the cow and the two dogs.
In the evening, Jiang Han came back carrying bean curd. He learned that Jiang Fuchao had tried to poison his own father but had poisoned the cow and the two dogs in the house first. He coldly cursed him and looked at him with disdain again. He felt that Jiang Fuchao was getting more dangerous as he got older. He might accidentally be killed by him one day.
“Don’t eat anything that Jiang Fuchao gives you in the future!” he told Hu Yao.
Hu Yao nodded silently.
Jiang Xiaochao felt a little wronged, but this time he couldn’t argue back. After all, he had almost poisoned his little cow and puppy.
…
The Mid-Autumn Festival in August was a time for family reunion. Hu Yao bought several different kinds of mooncakes, just like last year. This time, she bought them from Qiu Yingwen. Her mooncakes were fragrant and crispy, and they were delicious. Jiang Xiaochao had already sneaked a few small mooncakes before the Mid-Autumn Festival.
The moon was especially round this Mid-Autumn Festival. The family of three sat in the courtyard, eating mooncakes and pomelos and enjoying the moon, feeling relaxed and carefree.
Song Sikai had Du Ximei with him this year and didn’t come to find Jiang Han to drink. He was different now that he was married. All he had in his eyes and heart was Du Ximei and the unborn child in her belly.
Children love to play with lanterns on this day. Hu Yao bought Jiang Xiaochao two small lanterns, just like last year. He happily let Jiang Han light them and took them out to play.
The moonlight was bright, and every household had lights on. The sound of laughter could be heard faintly from other houses, and the childish and joyful voices of children were mixed in, creating a warm atmosphere.
Jiang Xiaochao had been out for a while when Du Ximei and the others came. They came with Qiu Yingwen and Qiu Yarong, as well as Tang Haofei, who was closely following them.
They came to ask them to eat roasted mutton together. They even brought the mutton with them.
The courtyard became lively again. Hu Yao went back to the house and brought out all the peanuts, melon seeds, and other snacks to put in the courtyard.
Qiu Yarong knew that Jiang Xiaochao was playing outside and ran out to find him with her little lantern.
Song Sikai and Tang Haofei were very familiar with Jiang’s house. They didn’t feel embarrassed at all. They looked for whatever they wanted and took whatever they wanted, as if they were at their own home.
They lit a fire and roasted the mutton. They asked Jiang Han if there was anything else in the house that they could roast with the mutton.
“Jiang Fuchao’s cow and two dogs.” Jiang Han pointed casually, very generous.
Jiang Xiaochao ran back with Qiu Yarong. He heard his father’s words and was worried. He knew that his father had always wanted to eat his little cow. Now, he even wanted to eat his little dog!
“No, no, don’t eat them! Daddy is mean!” He quickly ran over to protect his little cow and puppy.
This time, Song Sikai and Tang Haofei didn’t join in the teasing. Instead, they stood on his side and criticized Jiang Han, righteously saying that Jiang Han was inhuman for eating his little cow and puppy.
“Jiang Fuchao, take out the mushrooms you picked before and show your respect to your uncles. Give them to them to eat.” Jiang Han snorted.
Song Sikai and Tang Haofei didn’t understand.
Jiang Xiaochao was conflicted: “But Mommy said that if you eat them, you’ll die!”
That mushroom incident had happened a while ago. There were no more mushrooms now. Hu Yao didn’t let him pick them anymore.
“If you die, you die. No one lives forever.” Jiang Han didn’t care.
“…”
As soon as he said those inhuman words, Song Sikai and Tang Haofei immediately gritted their teeth and poured him drinks.
But Jiang Han’s drinking capacity was much better than theirs. They got drunk, but Jiang Han was still sober.
Hu Yao, Du Ximei, and Qiu Yingwen sat on one side, eating roasted meat and chatting about women’s topics. They didn’t pay much attention to the drunken men.
Women’s small talk could go on for a long time once they started.
The meat was too greasy to eat. Hu Yao went to the kitchen and cut a watermelon and washed some other fruits.
“Ready?” Jiang Han followed her into the kitchen at some point. He waited for her to finish washing and, without letting her touch it, picked up the large basin of fruit.
He had a slightly strong smell of alcohol on him. He had drunk a lot tonight. He was actually drunk, but it didn’t show on his face. Only his eyes were slightly hazy.
He was really drunk. He hadn’t even carried the fruit out of the kitchen yet when he turned around and looked at her again, staring at her for a few seconds before suddenly hugging her and saying that he wanted to take her back to bed.
“…I don’t want to sleep yet.” Hu Yao was helpless. She wanted to pry his hands open.
As soon as she resisted, he frowned and wanted to scold her. He even threatened to hit her hand.
Hu Yao hit him before he could hit her hand. She pushed him away, slightly stunned.
She couldn’t push him away.
“Go away!” Hu Yao glared at him. Every time he got drunk, he would drag her back to sleep. She wasn’t even the slightest bit sleepy now, especially with Du Ximei and the others outside. What kind of owner would go to sleep with a drunkard?
“You’ve gotten bold, haven’t you?” Seeing her angry and pushing him, he spoke in a slightly sluggish tone, pinching her soft cheek, displeased.
Hu Yao looked at him, softening her voice and coaxing the drunkard: “Go find Chaochao first, I’ll go to sleep with you later.”
Jiang Han frowned for a moment, listening to her gentle tone, he reluctantly agreed.
He lowered his head and kissed her lips, then stroked her head, strode out, and walked steadily to pick up Jiang Fuchao who was swinging on the swing with Qiu Yarong.
“Dad?” Jiang Xiaochao still held an unfinished leg of lamb in his hand, looking bewildered.
At this moment, the yard was in chaos. There were three drunkards. Jiang Han was in the best condition. Tang Haofei was drunk and clinging to Qiu Yingwen, refusing to let go. Qiu Yingwen wouldn’t hit him, but even scolding him made him feel wronged. He was crying and saying a bunch of nonsense, and finally said he would die for her, asking her to kill him.
Qiu Yingwen: “…”
Song Sikai was chasing two dogs, looking kind and saying they were the children Du Ximei had given him. The two dogs struggled desperately, barking and howling, but Song Sikai held them down tightly, forcing them to call him “dad.”
Du Ximei: “…”
