Chapter 29 : My sister-in-law is kind and positive
Although Su Ranran was sure that she would eventually escape unscathed and that they would be grateful to her, she couldn’t help but feel a little guilty in the moment.
They were all from the same generation, so how could she not understand how everyone felt about the great man?
But before she could think about it further, she arrived at the assembly point.
Team leader Wang Fulai began his routine mobilization speech.
The women and the weak were assigned to harvest rice, while the strong were tasked with picking out the cut rice. Children and the elderly were also given the task of picking up rice ears.
Unlike the rush to harvest in previous years, this year the team members seemed to be full of energy. Everyone was eager to take on the hard, tiring work.
Having been the team leader for so many years, Wang Fulai had never witnessed such a scene. He almost burst into tears!
At the same time, the three daughters-in-law of the Li family, standing in the corner, looked like defeated roosters, hiding outside the crowd in disgrace, with no one willing to talk to them.
Occasionally, someone who approached them still looked on with a sense of gloating.
“Jianjun’s wife, why hasn’t your husband come back yet?” someone asked knowingly.
Someone else immediately chimed in.
“Hey, there’s been no news for so long. I think he must have done something serious.”
“I think so too. You don’t know, there’s someone in the next brigade who was arrested for stealing a chicken.”
The implication was clear: it was impossible for him to be released after stealing so much meat.
The three sisters-in-law, already frightened, were sweating profusely.
Their lives, once glamorous and beautiful, now felt embarrassing.
The men in their family were arrested, the pillars of the family were gone, and they seemed to have lost their strength. Panic began to settle in.
Listening to the mocking remarks of those watching the drama unfold, they didn’t dare speak a word. They just wanted to keep a low profile and hope everyone would forget about them.
But their family had done too much in the past. With meat at every meal, they looked down on others.
They had offended so many people.
Now, in trouble, how could those they had ridiculed just let them off the hook?
“Poor things, all the men in Li Dapeng’s family have been arrested, and I don’t know if they’ll ever eat white rice again.”
The fact that they ate white rice every day was something they boasted about.
At first, everyone in the team was envious, since everyone else was still eating sweet potato porridge while they were enjoying white rice.
“White rice? I see how weak they are, they can barely even eat sweet potatoes.”
Farming still depended on strong labor. The families with more strong labor and more work points could live a better life.
Like the Li family, with all the men arrested, the few women left would be hard-pressed to even eat sweet potatoes.
Listening to these mocking words, the daughters-in-law of the Li family felt deeply uncomfortable. They resented Liu Guimei for getting involved, thinking that if she hadn’t, they would still be enjoying delicious food and spicy drinks.
Why did they have to endure this?
They just hoped their husbands would return soon, and as for that troublemaking mother-in-law, they hoped she’d be thrown in jail.
Su Ranran, however, was not paying attention to the Li family’s situation.
At this moment, she was leading the little ones from the Shen family to pick up rice ears in the field.
“Aunt, I picked up one!”
Suddenly, Xiao Doudou staggered toward her, holding up a rice ear.
She was wearing the clothes that Xu Huilian had made smaller, paired with a little straw hat that Su Ranran had woven for her. She looked so adorable.
“Xiao Doudou is really amazing,” Su Ranran said as she opened the bag for her to place the rice ears in.
The work seemed a little rushed today, and there were quite a few rice ears scattered on the ground. Even Xiao Doudou had managed to pick up several.
Hearing her praise, Xiao Doudou smiled and squinted her eyes, looking even more charming.
Xiao Doudou was the only girl in the younger generation of the Shen family. Not only did the adults adore her, but even the mischievous children in the family liked her very much.
On the other side, Gao Fangxia was working hard to cut rice when a sarcastic voice suddenly came from nearby.
“Hey, Gao Fangxia, why is your sister-in-law picking up rice ears with the kids instead of cutting rice?”
Upon hearing this, Gao Fangxia didn’t even raise her eyelids, ignoring her completely.
Who in the team didn’t know that Huang Meihua was a well-known troublemaker?
But Huang Meihua was only looking for an excuse to complain about others and didn’t care whether anyone paid attention or not.
“If I were you, I wouldn’t be able to live a day like this. Your sister-in-law is afraid of the heavy work, and your brother-in-law is busy and exhausted.”
If this had been said by an ordinary daughter-in-law, it might have stirred up trouble. But Gao Fangxia wasn’t bothered. Was she trying to use her as a pawn?
Did she really think she was that stupid?
She didn’t care what Su Ranran was doing. At least if she stayed with the Shen family, her eldest brother would give her five more yuan a month, along with meat tickets. They all benefitted from it.
Did Huang Meihua think she could cause conflict between her and Su Ranran? Bah! That was wishful thinking!
While cutting rice quickly, Gao Fangxia also shouted hoarsely, “My sister-in-law just got sick, but she insisted on coming to work in the fields even though she hasn’t fully recovered yet. Let me tell you, how many people in the team are as active as her?”
Upon hearing this, the gossipers nearby subconsciously turned to look at Su Ranran. They wouldn’t have believed it until they saw her. She looked so frail that they wouldn’t think she wasn’t sick.
“This educated youth Su is great. She has a high level of awareness,” someone couldn’t help but praise her.
After all, she came to work while sick. No matter how much she did, her attitude alone was praiseworthy.
Unlike some people who obviously aren’t sick but still pretend to be and ask for leave.
“She’s worthy of being a military wife. Her awareness is something that ordinary people can’t compare to,” another person added, praising her.
Gao Fangxia continued, “You don’t know how good my sister-in-law is. My brother in law bought her meat to nourish her body, but she couldn’t bear to eat it herself and brought it back to share with us.”
Her face showed a touching expression as she spoke.
This left Huang Meihua, who had originally intended to cause trouble, speechless!
No wonder Gao Fangxia was praising her so much.
If she had such a naive sister-in-law, she would praise her to the skies too! Su Ranran didn’t eat the meat herself but took it back to share with others. Wasn’t that foolish?
But how could Gao Fangxia know why Su Ranran brought back so much meat?
After all, it had ended up in their stomachs, hadn’t it?
Her mother had taught her from a young age that family disgrace should not be aired publicly. No matter what happened at home, they were all part of the old Shen family when they went out. If the sister-in-law was embarrassed, the shame would fall on her too.
And Su Ranran, who had done nothing but follow the children to pick up a rice ear, was inexplicably given a halo of high consciousness and kindness.
When the workday ended, everyone who met her couldn’t help but offer a few words of concern. They told her not to work so hard because health was the foundation of revolution.
Su Ranran: …
What on earth happened that she didn’t know about?
She was just picking up some rice ears!
