Chapter 59 : Don’t Be Embarrassed
Su Ranran nearly choked on her saliva when she heard the Shuiqiao Brigade-style swearing.
It was her first time following the army in two lifetimes, and she didn’t expect that something like this would happen in the family compound.
She had thought that, no matter what, everyone would maintain a friendly demeanor on the surface. But others had long been accustomed to such things. To put it simply, the family compound was just a small society.
The military wives there came from all over the country some from cities, others from rural areas. Naturally, their personalities varied, so friction was not surprising.
The person who was cursing was Lu Haiyan, the daughter-in-law of the third company of the second battalion. She had a hot temper and would never let herself be taken advantage of.
This morning, she had gone to the Wanwan Base to take care of her vegetable garden, only to find that two leaves were missing from her already scarce cabbage.
This was a big deal!
On the island, you can throw away fish and shrimp, but vegetables are sacred!
Vegetables were their lifeblood. They even gave each vegetable a name and took care of it carefully.
Usually, she didn’t even add too many vegetables to her meals, and would feel distressed for a long time if one broke off. Now that two leaves were missing, it was like stirring up a hornet’s nest!
Others understood her feelings. If two leaves had been taken, they would have cursed too!
“If she stole my leaves, I wish she’d get ulcers every day, and everything she eats would taste bad!”
Lu Haiyan cursed while placing her hands on her hips.
Su Ranran: …
Ulcers aren’t exactly a disease, but they are painful and could even kill. Is she just upset that everything she eats tastes bad?
This was a problem that had troubled the soldiers and civilians on the island for decades. That’s why, even though it was just a small vegetable, everyone treated it with great care.
When they heard her curse, no one laughed at her. Everyone silently sympathized with her.
At the same time, they were also wondering: who stole the leaves?
But everyone in the family compound knew each other, and no one would do something like this. Who would want to be laughed at by everyone?
The only newcomer was the wife of the deputy regiment commander.
For a moment, a subtle thought crossed everyone’s minds.
I heard the deputy regiment commander’s wife looks like a fairy. Would she do something like this?
People have a strange mentality. They love to see those who seem unattainable get a little dust on them, as if they could reach them.
Su Ranran didn’t know that they were guessing about her. She just felt the cursing was getting louder and closer, as if it was approaching her house.
Frowning, she walked toward the door.
As soon as she reached the door, she saw the cursing woman stop right by her door.
While cursing, the woman’s eyes seemed to glance at her intentionally.
Many people nearby had already poked their heads out and were looking in the direction of her home.
Su Ranran: …
So, the person they’re cursing is me?
This made Su Ranran so angry. She was a newcomer to the army and didn’t even know the lay of the land. How could she know where the Wanwan Base was?
Although she had planned to get along well with the other military families, it didn’t mean she would act as if nothing had happened when others were bullying her at her doorstep.
At that moment, Zhong Juhua’s voice, filled with disbelief, came from the house next door.
“You don’t have to come here to curse us if you’ve lost your vegetables. People who don’t know would think you’re scolding me. I don’t even like your two vegetables. My vegetables are much more beautiful than yours.”
Zhong Juhua knew exactly who Lu Haiyan was scolding.
But even just thinking about it, anyone could tell that Su Ranran had only arrived so late yesterday and hadn’t left the house early in the morning. How could she know where the vegetable field was?
She just couldn’t stand the casual accusations.
Hearing this, Lu Haiyan paused for a moment, then scolded even louder.
The expressions of the people nearby became more awkward, and they all stared at the door of the deputy head of the regiment’s house.
It turned out that the person who had been standing at the door just now had disappeared at some point, seemingly hiding due to a guilty conscience.
At first, everyone had been just murmuring to themselves, but now they were more uncertain.
Could this new and beautiful military wife really do such a thing?
Just as everyone was filled with doubt, the door of the deputy head of the regiment opened again. The slender figure appeared at the door once more.
Earlier, they had only caught a glimpse of her and hadn’t clearly seen what she looked like.
Now, standing outside the door, everyone couldn’t help but gasp!
The legend was true, the deputy head’s wife really did look like a fairy. Not only did she have fair skin, but her face was like a flower, delicate and beautiful. Her slender figure was not concealed by the loose clothes she wore.
Just as everyone was still in shock over her beauty, Su Ranran stepped out with a large bundle of vegetables from behind the door.
When they saw the bundle of vegetables, everyone’s eyes nearly glowed with greed!
Those were vegetables! So many vegetables!
One meal… no! Ten meals would not be enough to eat them all!
“Before I joined the army, I heard that there was a shortage of vegetables on the island. After I got off the train, I happened to meet a fellow villager cutting vegetables, so I brought some for everyone. I was busy earlier and didn’t have time to take them out. Now that the sisters-in-law are here, I don’t have to visit everyone’s homes one by one. Come on, don’t be shy, each of you take a handful and consider it a welcome gift from me for moving into the family compound.”
Upon hearing this, everyone’s eyes widened!
She was offering them a handful of green vegetables?
That was a handful of green vegetables, more tempting than a basket of fish.
Although the leaves were a little broken and didn’t look particularly beautiful, they were still vegetables!
“Haha, how can I be so embarrassed?”
One person said, staring at her vegetables, as though afraid that in the blink of an eye, the bundle of vegetables would be gone.
“That’s right, sister-in-law, vegetables are precious, you should keep them for yourself.”
Someone else swallowed their saliva and refused insincerely.
At this point, who still remembered the absurd speculation from earlier?
They had an entire bundle of vegetables, why would they care about two missing leaves from Wanwan Base?
Su Ranran didn’t waste any more words. She simply grabbed a handful of vegetables and stuffed them into Zhong Juhua’s hands without explanation.
“Juhua, thank you for helping me so much yesterday. Please take these vegetables home.”
“How can that be? There are so many vegetables. If you can’t finish them, just dry them and save them.”
Although Zhong Juhua also wanted to eat vegetables, she had already brought some back from the county yesterday, so she wasn’t as greedy.
“Vegetables are best when fresh. Take them quickly. They’re precious on the island, but on the mainland, they’re everywhere.”
Hearing this, Zhong Juhua stopped refusing.
Once someone had taken them, the others couldn’t resist either. Soon, the bundle of vegetables was all distributed.
Whether intentional or not, Su Ranran distributed the vegetables to everyone, except for Lu Haiyan.
Lu Haiyan watched as the vegetables were almost all gone, and her face turned green and red.
At this moment, Su Ranran seemed to have just noticed her and looked at her in surprise.
“Oh, sister-in-law, I almost missed you. Did you lose two leaves just now?”
It was unclear whether it was intentional, but the words “two leaves” felt particularly heavy! Lu Haiyan was extremely embarrassed.
But Su Ranran kindly handed her a handful of vegetables.
“Those two leaves are gone. I have plenty here. Don’t be embarrassed. Here, take these.”
As soon as she said this, Lu Haiyan’s face turned from green to red, then from red to black her expression changing like a rainbow.
