In her previous life, someone had broken in through the window and stolen many things.
This only made Yu Xifeng’s already difficult days even worse.
This time around, to prevent it from happening again, she installed bulletproof glass in the house.
The intruder had climbed over from outside, probably from a different building. How unlucky for her that the thief just happened to choose a time when she wasn’t home.
Yu Xifeng glanced at Xu Qingrou, intuitively feeling this had something to do with her.
Xu Qingrou and Yang Rong both stood aside. Yang Silong didn’t bother hiding the glee on his face, while Yang Sizhu looked like she was enjoying the show.
Han Lei said, “Liu Yuan is a resident in the building next door. Some neighbors reported that he jumped down from your place. His death has been confirmed.”
“You’re the one who killed my nephew!” Aunt Liu accused.
“Your nephew?” Yu Xifeng suddenly understood. That explained why Aunt Liu had leaked information—only then did the neighbors know so well what was happening in her home.
Han Lei interrogated, “Where were you? What were you doing?”
Yu Xifeng answered, “I went out to look for food.”
She opened her backpack for Han Lei to see. Inside were packets of mushrooms and wild vegetables, the leaves still damp with dew.
Han Lei glanced over and reminded her, “Be very careful when collecting things outside. It’s best to have an experienced person check them for you, and always cook them thoroughly before eating.”
Yu Xifeng nodded without offending him.
By experience, having survived the seventh year of the apocalypse and struggled through hardships, she knew which things were edible or not. She considered herself no less knowledgeable than Hu Mu.
Yu Xifeng said, “Why would someone come to my place in the middle of the night?”
Aunt Liu screamed, “If you hadn’t seduced my nephew, why else would he have climbed through your window? Don’t pretend here—you’re a shameless woman, and I’ve seen plenty like you.”
Yu Xifeng chuckled, then turned to Han Lei, “If Liu Yuan dared to take such risks, it’s probably not his first time. Several households in our building had items stolen before. It’s likely the same thief who deliberately chose to come when I wasn’t home. Why not ask those households and see if the situation matches?”
Liu Yuan’s wife shivered, “You’re talking nonsense.”
Yu Xifeng’s words reminded the others present.
“My house was robbed before—lost a bag of rice and some meat from the fridge.”
Someone shouted at Yu Xifeng, “The thief in Zhao’s house broke in through the window. She’s in 1401, the same facing direction as your place.”
“Maybe it really is the same person.”
The surrounding people grew more suspicious.
Sensing the tide turning, Aunt Liu collapsed to the floor, closing her eyes and throwing a tantrum, “Stop with your nonsense! Just because my nephew died, you’re throwing dirt on him? Don’t you have any conscience? Bullying his widow! My nephew died and can’t even rest in peace. If he has a spirit in heaven, he’s watching you all. As a ghost, he won’t let you go!”
Yu Xifeng stepped forward and helped Aunt Liu up.
Aunt Liu clung to the ground, unwilling to rise. Yu Xifeng grabbed her and used a clever grip to press down on her nerves.
Aunt Liu instantly lost strength and was lifted up.
Yu Xifeng smiled, carefully controlling her grip so that Aunt Liu felt pain but couldn’t scream.
“Auntie, the floor’s cold, and the leaders are here. Get up and speak properly. There are so many buildings in this community. Liu Yuan is your nephew—why does he only choose our building, and every time he gets away with it? That’s just too lucky.”
Aunt Liu opened her mouth but couldn’t make a sound. Her expression looked like she’d seen a ghost.
Yu Xifeng then took out her phone and played the surveillance footage.
In the video, Liu Yuan’s face was covered, but his clothing made it clear it was him.
“See? Liu Yuan immediately started smashing my window once he got up here. That means he was certain I wasn’t home. The only person I told about leaving was Hu Mu. Aunt Hu, did you tell anyone?”
Hu Mu shook her head, “My son and daughter-in-law knew, but they haven’t been out these days.”
After a pause, Aunt Liu found her voice again: “You walked out through that door and someone saw you. Do you want people to say something? A woman who’s gone for days at a time can’t be a decent person.”
Yu Xifeng didn’t follow Aunt Liu’s line, “Yes, I walked out, and more than one person saw me. So he specifically chose when I wasn’t home. What did he want to do? He was the thief. You’re not going to blame me for his death, are you?”
Aunt Liu was speechless and gave Liu Yuan’s wife a meaningful look.
The crowd began to murmur again.
“My house lost a lot of money—could that be him too?”
“Look at his wife’s round face. She must eat well. I never saw them buy food outside. Where would all that food come from?”
“Aunt Liu even went to her nephew’s house with a bucket. I bet she was tipping him off.”
Aunt Liu’s face grew paler and paler.
Liu Yuan’s wife looked more and more guilty and flustered.
At this point, everything was clear.
From when Yu Xifeng arrived, to when she used just a few words to calm the scene and suppress Aunt Liu’s momentum, she never showed any signs of nervousness.
Han Lei looked at Yu Xifeng deeply, “Everyone, come with me to the community center.”
Witnesses Xu Qingrou, Yun Jie, Hu Qiangyong, and Zhao Yao all went along.
The kayak Han Lei brought was full, so they borrowed Yu Xifeng’s.
Yu Xifeng remembered last time her kayak was borrowed by that Team Leader Wang.
She wondered how he was doing now.
After taking their statements, Aunt Liu and Liu Yuan’s wife were detained. They were accomplices in theft and would be punished by being made to do labor.
Post-disaster reconstruction work was plentiful and grueling. Prisoners who didn’t deserve death were often forced to do hard labor for twelve hours a day until exhausted.
After the statements, since the group came from the same place and Yu Xifeng had her own kayak, Han Lei didn’t arrange for them to be driven back to the community.
Yun Jie, Hu Qiangyong, and Hu Mu all boarded Yu Xifeng’s kayak.
Xu Qingrou hesitated, wanting to say something but held back.
Yu Xifeng ignored her and took the other two families, paddling steadily back to the community.
Back at her home, Yu Xifeng arrived.
Although in a little while, Xu Qingrou definitely wouldn’t be able to stay, Yu Xifeng didn’t want to wait.
Having that whole family at the door was like a toad stuck on her foot, annoying even if it couldn’t bite.
Only Yang Sizhu and Yang Silong remained in the corridor of the 15th floor.
Yu Xifeng had kicked Yang Silong before; he didn’t dare look at her and shrank back.
Yang Sizhu stiffened her neck, glaring at her with disgust.
Yu Xifeng walked over to Yang Silong and dragged him forward.
Though taller than Yu Xifeng, Yang Silong struggled weakly, like a dead dog, showing no fight.
Yu Xifeng pressed his head against the wall and elbowed him in the stomach.
She then pounded her fists on him repeatedly.
Yu Xifeng was careful not to go too far—he wouldn’t die or get obvious injuries, but she ensured he felt the utmost pain.
Yang Sizhu screamed, grabbed something, and smashed it on Yu Xifeng’s head.
Yu Xifeng even managed to slap Yang Sizhu twice amidst the chaos.
