Back to the Disaster: Scumbag Dad and Stepmom Step Aside
Back to the Disaster: Scumbag Dad and Stepmom Step Aside Chapter 58: Truly Frightening

Compared to Han Lei, Wang Anmin was sharper and much harder to fool.

Yu Xifeng herself was a person with secrets.

She didn’t want to attract the attention of someone like Wang Anmin.

When Yu Xifeng got home, she printed out a document on her computer.

The document lay inside a compartment; Yu Xifeng didn’t touch it with her hands. She sat down in her chair, hesitant and indecisive, unable to make up her mind.

After a whole night passed, Yu Xifeng ultimately chose Wang Anmin.

Partly because she admired a person like him, and also because she was grateful for his concern and care.

Upstairs, Yu Xifeng had been carefully watching Wang Anmin’s movements for several days.

Every day he left very early—before the community center’s working hours even began, he was already outside the residential area.

That day, Yu Xifeng got up especially early, braving the cold wind to get ahead of him along his usual route.

So cold.

Yu Xifeng regretted it.

If she had chosen Han Lei back then, things wouldn’t have been so complicated.

Just pick a day, slap the paper in front of Han Lei’s door, and that would be it.

But Wang Anmin was new here, and Yu Xifeng didn’t even know where he lived.

Someone like Wang Anmin probably had counter-surveillance training. Yu Xifeng didn’t dare to alert him.

Even the tailing couldn’t be too obvious.

The snow was so white. Yu Xifeng worried the paper might get wet and feared it wouldn’t stand out enough, so wearing gloves, she pulled out a file folder from her space and wrapped the paper inside it. Then she took an orange and placed it on top of the paper.

A splash of bright orange against the endless white.

After setting the scene and confirming that Wang Anmin would arrive there in half an hour, Yu Xifeng quickly retreated back into the residential area.

As she was going upstairs, she heard someone coming out, so she immediately slipped back into her space.

Snow fell silently.

There was no sound of people around for miles; Wang Anmin was walking alone on the road.

A bright orange rolled out from the snow. Wang Anmin was startled, instinctively putting his hand on his gun.

After seeing it clearly, he first exhaled in relief, then felt something strange.

Why would there be an orange on the road at this time?

When something is out of the ordinary, it’s suspicious.

After realizing it was a file folder underneath, Wang Anmin walked over and slowly crouched down.

He opened the file folder and, after reading just two lines, his breath caught sharply.

He stood up and started examining the surroundings for any traces.

There was nothing in the snow.

Only pure white.

He dared not take it lightly and quickly called for backup through a secure line, ordering a thorough search nearby.

Had anyone come out? Were there any witnesses?

Meanwhile, Yu Xifeng was already back home, soaked with wind and snow. Even the little orange she released from her space didn’t want to get near her.

Such a little ungrateful thing.

Yu Xifeng went into her bedroom and soaked her hands and feet in hot water, feeling revived.

On the other side, Wang Anmin’s search continued into the night without any progress.

The temperature outside was no longer suitable for human activity, so Wang Anmin had no choice but to give up.

By then, Wang Anmin had finished reading the paper and still felt a chill in his heart.

The paper detailed future natural disasters and their expected durations, even mentioning secondary disasters and recommending locations for future bases.

If this paper fell into other hands, it might be dismissed as fantasy and nonsense.

Until the next disaster came.

But for Wang Anmin, some of the information matched what he already knew, greatly increasing the paper’s credibility.

No one knew that Wang Anmin held a very high rank, and his direct superior was a military district commander.

Many of the plans mentioned on the paper were still in the research and conceptual stage, not yet implemented.

Wang Anmin had been injured during rescue operations and, based on his own wishes, was temporarily transferred to the grassroots level for a while.

According to the original plan, once he recovered, he would soon be promoted back.

But unexpectedly, he ran into this situation.

For some reason, a delicate, pure face floated up in his mind — those black, deep eyes seemed to hide many unspeakable things.

He suppressed the fluttering in his heart.

Soon an order arrived.

It mentioned Wang Anmin’s rank and instructed him to stay permanently at the community center, watching carefully for any more mysterious notes.

The strange appearance of this note meant it was probably deliberately left there waiting for Wang Anmin.

Since someone had sent it to him once, maybe there would be a second time.

He was ordered to continue the investigation privately. Also, he was to take over the community center, preparing disaster prevention and evacuation plans.

That same day, the community center gave Wang Anmin the largest office.

After all the power struggles in the community center, no one expected an outsider to be parachuted in — and one with such strong hands.

Everyone was as if they had lost their heads but still forced a smile when facing Wang Anmin.

“Good grief, what a disaster,” they thought.

Han Lei carefully introduced him, while Yang Rong kept his head down, intimidated by Wang Anmin’s imposing aura.

Wang Anmin’s subordinates conducted a thorough review of all ongoing work and immediately dismissed those who were corrupt.

With his firm grip, the internal strife that had plagued the community center since the disaster finally came to a halt.

Wang Anmin streamlined positions. A few office directors remained in their posts but effectively became figureheads.

He personally led a team to eliminate several cancerous elements nurtured by the disaster.

Some were even connected to community center staff.

These people were brought to the community square at the gate and executed by firing squad.

He also dealt harshly with several violent cases caused by resource disputes.

Vacancies created by personnel cuts were filled by more temporary workers.

Jobs included, but were not limited to, snow clearing, resource collection, site construction, cafeteria help, and organizing the building of production greenhouses.

Having read that paper, Wang Anmin knew well that many constructions wouldn’t yield short-term results and might even increase consumption significantly.

But compared to letting unemployed vagrants target others, Wang Anmin preferred giving them something to do, and some food rations to collect.

The community atmosphere improved.

Yu Xifeng naturally heard some rumors.

She had underestimated Wang Anmin.

Sitting on her bed, Yu Xifeng reviewed everything carefully again and was sure she hadn’t slipped up in delivering that paper. No clues were exposed.

From start to finish, she had never met Wang Anmin face-to-face.

After encountering him, Yu Xifeng stopped stockpiling cooked food.

She set up her generator and various living essentials in her home.

She also regularly participated in the community’s weekly volunteer labor, collecting some snow water.

Yi Jiancong had been removed and no one bothered Yu Xifeng anymore.

Wang Anmin was busy handling various affairs and following up on the mysterious paper investigation, too busy to have met her.

One night, Wang Anmin had his subordinate bring a bag of rice to Yu Xifeng.

The rice was from his own salary.

His subordinate stood at the door in uniform, scaring Yu Xifeng so much she nearly ran away into her space.

Luckily, his subordinate left the rice at the door, delivered the message, and left immediately.

Yu Xifeng didn’t want the rice and even less wanted to return it herself.

If she returned it, she’d have to talk to Wang Anmin.

She counted on her fingers—only three more days until she could move into the underground shelter.

The basement wouldn’t be as comfortable as her room.

But there, Wang Anmin wouldn’t be around.

Someone who checked up on her from time to time—that was truly frightening.
